The problem is the combat revolves around "dodging" to iframe through attacks rather than physically getting out of the way. There are fights where the boss will do a 20 attack combo where direction matters but that's about it. In the first Souls game positioning, spacing, and dodging in the right direction was viable because enemies didn't do all these retarded combos. And shields are only useful against trash mobs or out of desperation during a boss, any threatening boss will just drain your stamina and break your guard. And most importantly dodge rolling as your main defense just looks fucking stupid, especially in a duel with a humanoid enemy. Dodge rolls should have a long recovery time and be a situational action, sekiro and bloodborne had the right idea but they kept dodge rolls in Elden Ring because they were worried about alienating the community of people who apparently have a hard on for rolling around nonstop.

my favorite sword has always been the tried and true broadsword, I love that swipe r2.

On weapons side there are a few dex focused weapons but if you aren't already building into dex they aren't fun enough (to me) to warrant a run with those weapons.

bolt of gransax - very strong weapon art but jesus christ spears are boring

godslayer greatsword - really strong but it is so good at normal bonking that the weapon art feels suboptimal to ever use outside of what would be free hits anyway

Those are the only weapons in dex that I tried when doing a dex based run. I switched around a lot because using one or the other wasn't hitting that fun factor for me. Half the weapons in my inventory weren't dex focused but I could whetstone them dex (any stat could use them so they don't feel dex based even turned into keen).

I never tried samurai swords.

They could have that and make endurance be the primary stat for it so it feels like you have to endure the suffering of the grafting and only lads with high endurance can survive the process.
The 3 magic stats as is sort of messed up the potential for flourishing builds.

With katanas I found there is one pretty neat thing to do. They have fast and long R2 pokes so you can just keep step canceling to quickly throw those out

My reason for not trying them out is I saw them as bleed sticks primarily. They act to facilitate the bleed procs.
When I did dabble with one for like an hour to see if I was being blockheaded I didn't like how much they bounced off anything with armor. If I wanted to bleed stuff I used the spiked cestus. I grew to really value weapons with strike damage overall they don't feel like they have a weakside like slash has built in.

DS3 was literally him saying "I don't want to make any more dark souls games" but that doesn't mean he didn't want to continue playing with the type of combat and mechanics they'd developed, it meant that he was tired of telling stories set in that universe. There's not a lot of room when the original story was about how the world needs to be allowed to die and then the next two games were basically the same premise. Especially since DS2 was taken out of Miyazaki's hands, meaning a bunch of stuff became canon that he had no input in.

Like I mentioned, Zelda can't fill that void anymore because its become an open world sandbox. It's no longer a dungeon crawler and its enemy and boss variety in recent entrees as been pitiful. I'll give it one thing though, at least it's not a iframe dodge fest, but you have to give yourself so many self-imposed challenges to make the combat fun. But I have faith they'll get their act together on the next mainline console Zelda game. If not, it's over.

You can but there's nothing stopping you from just rolling into an attack with a half a second of invincibility. Directional dodges are only necessary under certain circumstances. And that still doesn't solve the issue of how rolling around everywhere feels stupid. I like quickstep but I don't like having to sacrifice an ash of war just for that.

You act like this is something the average player is going to do though. The game heavily incentives the average player to roll around. A video of someone with tons of experience and knowledge of the game's mechanics doesn't change that.
