So excited I bought the special PS3 that came with it. Then I got to the final chapter of the game and just wanted it to be over already. Wasn't a total bust though, my version of the PS3 turned out to be the last one backwards compatible with PS2 games so that was pretty cool.

Looking back it was a better game than MGSV even with the plot fixes. MGSV had better gameplay but the story and game was NOT a MGS game.

I was extremely hyped for it and was blown away by everything. Nowadays I still like it aside from the really long cutscenes and the part where Snake is microwaved on the way to the server room

they're both subpar entries into the series but 1 2 3 are the kino meat and complaining about 4 or 5 is stupid, besides revengeance and PW being cool and fun
5 they beat 4's gameplay to a pulp but the entire dev time of the game was spent over that, then they barely got to the missions and lore at the end before calling it quits, justifiably
the worst part is konami decides to make metal gear survive and leave it at that instead of adding a ton of content to 5, all that work for nothing

This

I was pretty high desu

Completely indifferent. I never even played it until 2012 when I was dating an autistic girl who was obsessed with the series and made me watch her play through it. It was agonizing

Ive never played a MGS game

You have no idea how fucking lucky you are you little nigger.

it was my first mgs. loved every moment, then played the series after

based MSXchad

Creating an entirely new engine for one game is only something Konami could achieve. The FOX Engine was amazing for its time, and still holds up even today. MGSV gameplay was easily 10/10, it just wasn't a MGS game. There was no story, no cutscenes etc akin to MGS1-3. Instead all we got was cassette tapes for half of the story.

Hyped. Couldn't afford a PS3 at the time but someone on Anon Babble recorded and edited the entire games cutscenes into a 10 hour video I watched.

MGSV had better gameplay

game was NOT a MGS game.

????

I was too busy being addicted to Maplestory and stealing from my mother for some NX cash

the dogshit graphics left me a bit weirded out, I expected it to at least not look like dogshit, but it really was bad, almost as bad as heavenly sword and drakengard 3

Konami HQ needs to be lit on fire for not making the Fox Engine open source. MGSV ran and looked amazing even on the PS3

Disgusted by downgrades. Hate leftover from how degenerate 3 was. I ignored it and when finally playing it years later insulted by it's lack of gameplay, it's poor performance, it's stupidity etc. It's not worth talking about. Guns and some models eg mercs looked tastefully reduced to primary features, most parts preserved, irrelevant things like detail texturing absent. No noise.

Volumetric effects fucked the framerate. Turning what would be 30fps to 20 every time present. Eg firing.

It's a piece of shit. An inept copy of better games. Used to push animu/asians as inherent in what militaria is stolen and perverted with inaccurate representation/ownership/origination/designation.

Loved it. Played it non stop until I finished the campaign and then when the MGO servers went up, I played it for years. I still feel bad for people who missed out on MGO2

Also noticed that all the people who bitched about this game were fedora wearing contrarian shitheads.

Almost as bad as every single PS3 exclusive game...heh

Probably the most disappointing game story I've ever experienced. Just a tremendous let down that the series never recovered from at all. Gameplay it was pretty good but there wasn't enough of it. Would've killed for like some VR missions equivalent. Online was cool though.

I enjoyed it on my first playthrough because I was wrapped up in the story, but looking back on it I think the gameplay is very lacking, because it relies too much on gimmick sections that never live up to how good the basic "sneaking through a warzone" gameplay was in acts 1 and 2
act 1: MGS sneaking
act 2: MGS sneaking
act 3: tailing mission that goes on too long and has far too much inactivity, followed by an on rails shooting section
act 4: sneaking against gekkos instead of human soldiers (they aren't as interactive as the humans are, which makes them much less interesting to sneak around), followed by several boss fights in a row of varying quality
act 5: combat followed by cutscenes

it becomes a massive slog on repeat playthroughs, but I still think it's something worth experiencing once because it has a lot of good moments scattered throughout

Name one game that looked better than it in 2008

any xbox 360 exclusive, name one and it will win the argument on auto-mode for me *drinks champagne and raises glass smiling*

It was pretty euphoric for me. I bought the MGS ps2 collection and played every title again leading up to the release of MGS4. That was some of my favorite gaming marathons that I've ever done, and the payoff was transcendent. I'm so happy for Hideo Kojima getting to put a proper end to the story. He went on to make Peace Walker, the true final game in the series but not the timeline, and that game was the PEAK of portable console gaming. I was glad to have participated in Metal Gear Online as well, as that game mode was something of a perfect synthesis between his game and a multiplayer format. Many many hours were logged in MGO and I made so many memories there as well. It al culminated with me getting my holy grail in 2013, a highly articulated with lights and removable armor Metal Gear Rex. Getting to pilot it in MGS4 was like a surreal dream for me; I've loved this mech since it stepped into my view whilst watching my brother play MGS1 on ps1.

tl;dr MGS4 + Peace Walker was peak Metal Gear; and there's nothing anyone can do to take those experiences away from me.

great tech demo but thats all. Tried telling everyone but nobody listened

Loved it and still do. I listen all the cutscenes every few years while working.

Were girls with interests like that not as desirable in 2012 or something?

MGO was incredibly fun and I wish I could go back

It was the first video game I watched on youtube.

Excited, I did after all buy a PS3 for it. I think it took me two years to realize how bad MGS4 really was.

When it first came out, I honestly didn't give a rat's ass about the story and just enjoyed the MGS games (including MGS4) rather blindly.
Years later, I decided to sit down with a bunch of friends and binge-play all of them (1-4). It was then that we decided to actually bother with the codec calls, cutscenes and everything else.
It was clearly a different experience, but in the end it just made me realize that they should have just ended it at 2 or 3.

idk i was 6

I love all of the canon games in the series.
I even like acid.
The story of the series falls off and the gameplay changes pretty drastically the closer you get to V.
3 has the best self contained story
2 probably has the best story but it doesn't mean as much without playing mgs1.
4 has the best bosses for the simple fact that you can pose them like gravure models. its the greatest easter egg in all of the series.

I was really disappointed with the cutscene to gameplay ratio and playing as Old Snake.

Old Snake has grown on me over the years.

Hated it. I still think it's shit, but my feelings have mellowed into apathy and I appreciate parts of it more now than I did at the time (the art direction).

Rose was so fucking hot it's unreal

I bought a bundle of MGS4 for $550 in 08 you tell me.

exactly this
i went and did no alerts no rations whatever. the first 2 acts are so fun and then you're just begging for it to end
no vr missions either so there's nothing else to do

I was a stupid 15 year old so I thought all of the fanservice and callbacks were hella f*cking epic and I didn't understand that Kojima was being passive aggressive and calling me a retard for enjoying it

In hindsight, I appreciate MGS4 as the portrait of a tortured artist who's grown to despise his own creation and his audience, who just wants Metal Gear to be over even though the publisher won't let it. It's just not very fun to actually PLAY, there's like 45 minutes of good core MGS gameplay and then it turns into a rail shooter and cutscene simulator for the rest of the 15 hour runtime.

Old Snake vs Liquid Ocelot was the most kino thing in all of the games

I was actually molding on behalf of Jack so hard. Even after the reveal I still think I would've chewed my arm off over the "we needed a safe cover" being marry your former boss instead of like, changing your name and moving to montreal

It's even more kino when you realize that Ocelot was pretending the whole time, so the entire fight was fake and gay and Ocelot was just trying to desperately recapture his battle with Naked Snake in 1964 - much like MGS4 itself, Ocelot is a sad, decrepit old man clinging to nostalgia and past glories because he has nothing new to say

I loved MGS4 on my first playthrough because of the fan-service and spectacle, but the more I replayed it the more I started to dislike it. The abysmally low amount of gameplay and dumb story retcons really drag down what should have been an awesome finale

I was mad pretty much the whole way through until snake and liquid/ocelot beat the shit out of eachother and the kino was so overwhelming that it redeemed the entire game

the worst metal gear game, 10/10

No, she was cool but also very self centered and flighty. Constantly had to say her preferences were better than anyone else's, claimed that everyone should be able to get a graduate degree and a well paying job because it was easy for her. After she broke up with me she started dating a guy who looked like 10% different from me and he got them both exiled from our friend group by being a huge dick to a guy for no reason

Boring.
With some great ideas.

I only had a Wii at the time. MGS4 and GTA IV were both games I heavily admired from afar, even while I was keeping myself preoccupied with Brawl. I ended up getting a PS3 a few years later, and played through the whole MGS series.

I really enjoyed it at the time, and still remember MGS4 more fondly than V. Maybe because I was caught up in the hype for the latter and subsequently disappointed.

Huge hype also because i was part of the MGO beta MGO and for me is still one of the best online game I ever played
Is back online google save mgo
