It feels pretty much the same as Iceborn to me, which is a good thing because I enjoyed Iceborn. I've only tried a couple weapons though and I may have just gotten lucky and picked only ones that didn't get changed that much. The mount I'm a bit iffy on, I think they need to add something to make it more clear when it's on autopilot versus when you're manually controlling it because sometimes I'd try to let it just do its thing after doing some manual movements and it would get stuck on shit and I couldn't tell if that was just its AI fucking up or if it was still waiting for me to do the steering.

They never did. There was never a reason to make it a morph weapon when that was Switch Axe's thing, and is sure as fuck didn't need to switch into ANOTHER AXE.

More streamlined and casual than World and Rise. They ruined a number of the weapons, namely hammer and insect glaive, and the game practically plays itself with the auto-movement and aim mode. It's a mess and needs another 6-12 months of development.

The combat feels very weak. I think it's because there is barely any hitstop, it feels like I'm hitting air.

a lot of the slower weapons feel better with the focus system, and attacking wounds makes the game easier. or at least this is how the beta felt; I’m assuming these are all weak low rank monsters. the new guard and parry changes are good; picking up items with the grapple is cool. visually the game looks good and the small details like endemic life and weather effects are great. the foliage is awful and the game has a lot of performance issues. the character and mount movement outside of combat is incredibly sluggish and the mount controls are frustrating or lazy depending on what you’re trying to accomplish. character creator is ok, some improvements some losses. the multiplayer ui and systems are awful, worse than rise. the map is ugly but you get used to it. fighting the thunder wyvern was pretty cool, the red mau or whatever it was I already forgot the name

tldr not as seamless or refined as world, but most of the weapons feel better and you have more control over your accuracy and less wasted attacks with the focus system. game seems easy atm

I'm not really sure how I feel about the bow, it was fun to use but phials just feel like an APM tax now instead of something to actually think about and ration (even if it didn't really take that much thought before), having a whole meter for just tracer arrows seemed kind of pointless and the homing effect from the tracer seems like it oversimplifies the weapon.

Gunlance feels like it got the changes it always needed. You're less likely to be forced into reload, stake or whatever and generally feels smoother to play. IG is weird at first but I like the direction they've took. Extract has always been an awkward thing of just stop and do it so you can keep playing. But now there is more of a loop to it of get extract, charge, focus attack, etc. I'd like more ways to spend extract if this is the future and charge to be less awkward. Also fuck aerial style it was always bad. Lance and SnS are, fine. Feels like they've been kept in line and attempted to refocus some centralising stuff like perfect rush. But yeah mostly the same.

Not entirely sold on the "open world" cause it kind of just feels like a world map. I wish the areas felt more distinct but fighting on a proper big sand dune with a monster that can collapse the area is pretty neat.

the game follows your windows color management settings unless you edit it. a lot of people have fucked up windows settings.

Completely hated it at since IG felt worst to control than pretty much every game including 4, though that was a skill issue since it relies on the new focus mode stuff now.

I'm just messing around with different weapons, liking it so far. Want to play the release with a friend, he had 300 hours in world but when we tried this beta, for some reason, he seems to complain how he's barely able to hit anything, which is kinda strange since he has a lot of hours on world. Should be obvious how important positioning is to hit stuff in monster hunter games.

20+ hours with the beta. I liked it a lot. I had a blast.
I played charge blade and bow mostly but did try every weapon.

I really enjoyed it, I can see why people say it's been heavily casualised, but I don't really care.
I'd take the wounds/focus over the clutch claw any days.
I'm not a fan on the base camp though. The performances already suck a lot, but having the whole region "loaded" because you can "seemlessly" go out to hunt, it's bad.

Not that anon, but the only change I'm not really happy about is spinning bludgeon no longer activating off of charging and releasing while moving. On paper, it's a good change, since it prevents you from using it when you're charge walking to the head while a monster is down and you don't come to a complete stop, but I also liked to use bludgeon as a combo of movement and damage at times.

How do I play GL? It was the weapon that got me into the series during FU, but I never really got the hang of it. I decided to try it out in Wilds and found out it was fun as fuck to play but I was mainly just doing random shit and would like to figure out combos and whatnot.

I've tried out Hammer, GL, Bow, and SnS this far. Plan to beat up rock frog with every weapon at least once to see how they play. Bow is interesting, the tracers and fuse arrows exploding when you hit them with dragon piercer/thousand dragons reminds me of the way bow played in Wild Hearts. SnS is just plain fun to me, I like the reposition attacks and the new toys, though I think Oils should have made a comeback.

Judging by their drops, everything except the initial intro quest monster you kill is at their high rank version. I was getting high rank bones and + parts from the ones I was killing.

gameplay is fun, I think wound attacks are too strong, and you shouldn't be able to do 360's while in focus mode, keep attack reorientation down to what it can do naturally. I also really hate seeing a bazillion hunters in the tiny ass village. Also don't love blending of the maps with the village, having the game split into 2 distinct modes of the hunt and the preparation for the hunt made the villages much cozier. while not needing to fully represent itself in the game world because it existed in a separate space from the hunting locales.

I really fucking love that you can hold attack while mounted with a lance and pretend to joust. this is all I've wanted out of a mount system.

How do I play GL

in wilds? so far I've just spammed the upward swing (triangle +circle), overhead smash, wide sweep into the wyvernstake combo, and if the opening is big enough after the second wyvern stake you go into wyvern fire. you can get to the overhead smash pretty fast if you're good at timing perfect guards, or you can get to the wide sweep by just spamming the regular stabs, after the 3rd you'll do the wide sweep.

its the parts system from all the other games but with a new gimmick that you can poke a certain part for extra damage.

Lance, CB and LS off the top of my head. Lane and LS blocks are not hard and CB is a bit tougher but more of an accessory than a required thing to be good.

Only complaint so far is monsters seem to run away giga fucking fast, which was always an annoying facet of these games if you were too slow at killing or unable to stun lock etc. but it feels like after maybe 40 seconds of fighting the Monster wants to fuck off already.

Game runs pretty well on a 12700k & 3070ti Combo also, was worried about the requirements but it seems to be a non-issue and I don't think I touched a single setting to make it run well.

I'm having conflicted thoughts about it. It's more emphasized in spending the essences and gaining them back, and the dive is weird to do. I really feel the lack of the helicopter bounce, but I hate the fact that you need all 3 essences to get the real moveset instead of just the red one
Also tried the dual blades and those are great, probably the best DBs ever

after the first charge attack with all three essences you can do a follow up by holding focus mode and press the same buttons again. It will consume your full buff but depending on how the kinsect hits you can get it back instantly again. Alternative you can just use the focus attack out of it in air and if you hit a wound regain the full buff. Since you can charge while performing actions you can do stuff like grounded charge attack, vault and start to recharge, do e.g. an air dodge and do yet another charge attack. For me this feels like a massive improvement as it gives the weapon more dynamic compared to the previous infinite spamming or in SB aerial poking. Having kinsect charge back feels also great.

Ironically playing around focus mode with KBM is way better than controller.
Otherwise the keybinds are mostly okay, just some nonsensical shit like special action like guarding on R for some reason.
I had to swap out a bunch of them but it was pretty quick.

really like what they did with the SnS, allowing you to move while slashing made using items while the weapon is out actually make sense. plus more combos and ok to decent damage makes it a fun weapon.

Clutch claw sucked cause every weapon had to similar stuff just to make it so one part of a monster took normal damage. Focus mode still has you playing the weapon normally, you still get zits without it if you hate using it that much and the focus attack to cash out just means your weapon has another unique tool.

attack reach feels a lot better now too, in older games it feels like you're waving a toothpick, now the blade looks bulkier and feels like its going farther on attacks.

It's literally an improved version of world. Unfortunately it runs like shit on my pc (rtx3060/r5 5600x), I can barely get 30fps on 1440p resolution. Hopefully they address this issue, not that I will be able to play at launch or to afford new components for my pc... it is what it is.

Blast Dash was at least really practical, allowing you to gap close really and lay on a slam burst while you're at it, its fine without it, but it was much more usable than the charged shelling, which was your only other choice

It's just not a problem though. You don't have to use it to get wounds, using it doesn't completely change how your weapon functions. If you don't really like using it at worst you'll be adding a little to your times if you only go into it for focus attack. With or without it you're still playing your weapon normally. Compared to it being mandatory that you go hump a part of a monster just to do normal damage? Which greatly extends your times if you don't actively keep up? It's a quirk at worst.

Rise beta was fun too. And Rise was fun for a while. But then after a hundred hours you realize that when combat is so streamlined, you just end up brainlessly autopiloting through every hunt. I like some of the changes made to some of the weapons but until I can actually mess with builds it's a glorified demo to showcase minor updates to weapon movesets. I want to see if they added more creative skills to sets because fuck meta fuck attack and crit up give me weird little skills like bubble dance and dungmaster. I really want them to get more creative with the different pods and crafting as well. My biggest concern is that there won't be a legitimate cantina for actual skills but I know they wont do that. The field grilling and the cat and other things are cute, we may get more camp customization and putting little critters around camp. They should include missions where you capture ecology guys to populate the camp so people can learn you can go out and catch them.

The soundtrack is kinda bad/bland from what we have so far. I miss the trumpets from world and the asian motifs from rise.

The desert map is kinda boring. There is that one open area in front of the donut where the lightning effects look cool, but aside from that it's pretty meh. I'm not sure if it's just the visual issues with the beta or if this is their intended vision, but I REALLY hope the other areas have more color.

The loop you want going requires wounding the monster so you get a quick refill, and the charge hit is a huge waste if you don't get all the hits. Even in some optimised speedrun that's going to be tricky if you don't spend some time doing your normal combos. Why do you people say GS is a combo weapon now? TCS is still king and that new charged rising slash doesn't seem any good by itself and feels way too slow to pull off to reliably counter.

Is it just me or is long sword the devs' favorite weapon? I was trying out all the weapons, and some feel worse (like Lance, sadly) but of course they added a demon gauge kind of mechanic to LS where when your bar is red not only can you do the regular shit but a lot of your moves have different animations.

Other weapons: Hammer felt pretty good, maybe it's because the final monster you can hunt in the beta has such a big fucking head. Hunting Horn, on the other hand, feels worse -- before you used to be able to do a 180 and then hit Triangle+Circle to do the overhead attack and hit behind you, and they nerfed the 180 speed. Dual Blades feels even easier, SnS felt largely similar, but I think they may have buffed stun percentages because I'm stunning with SnS so much more than in previous titles. GS felt awkward to me because you can now spin around a bit while charging, but it's hard to see what exactly the limits of the rotation is... definitely easier than before, and the tackle reduces damage by a LOT more than previously.

The gameplay is World/IB but with some weapon changes brought over from Rise (not all), some new moves, and a special focus move for all weapons. It comes with all the obnoxious baggage of World though which includes awful story nonsense, treating the game like it's an MMO, clusterfucks of tutorials everywhere, and maps with slopes everywhere. The combat areas are particularly bad where monsters just stop and fight you in the smallest, worst areas possible so you really just end up fighting the environment. It's still enjoyable but I Iike how the portable team handles MH much more and Rise/SB is still the best modern MH in my opinion.

not using focus mode literally will not give you any negatives, if you're a good player you will know how to position yourself anyway without the clunky aim button, if you keep hitting the same part you will trigger the wounds anyway, if you keep hitting those wounds you will get extra damage for hitting them, if you keep hitting it again it will pop and cause a knockdown anyways

Get good. I've been countering Rey Dau more and more reliably each hunt as I learn its attack pattern and cadence. Offset on GS is cracked, and using unusual moves to get back to charged offset attack faster breaths life into the GS moveset.

Wrong, you have to clutch claw if you want normal damage. In wilds wounds will occur either way. Clutch wasn't to get extra damage but for that part to take normal damage and to have the amount of hit zones you'd expect. Hunting Horn is like World's HH but better. Fuck whatever they did to this weapon in Rise. Also, unlike Iceborne, you don't spam the spinny move 24/7. Awesome.

SnS is like Rise's SnS but... uh... less flashy I guess? It was already pretty good in Rise and it's similar in this game. The sidestep with direction+Y is great.

Charge Blade is completely different: I like that you can insta-charge the shield in one single move, and that you aren't forced into sword-mode after AED. But Savage Axe is way too strong and completely unnecessary: the core gameplay should be charge phials in sword-mode --> switch to axe-mode to consume phials and deal damage --> switch back to sword-mode and repeat. But they added a superaxe-mode on top of that, which doesn't consume phials so you never switch back to sword-mode..? I don't get it, it's complexity for the sake of complexity. Anyway, nothing can be worse than SAED spam.

I'm not a fan of focus mode. The wounding thing is fine I guess, but the fact you can freeaim with every weapon is so dumb. They should at the very least reduce the damage: "you can play this game like a TPS if you want, but all of your moves deal 20% less damage". There, fixed.

Suew, and no one is refuting that the game is an enexcusably unoptimized mess, but I think OP just wanted to talk gameplay mechanics over just repeating what everyone knows about Capcom being incompetent with the performance of their games.

I liked it; the map is huge, the combat is like World and not like rise. I main dual blades, and I like it. Fast and fluid action with evasion, and the iconic blade spinny move is in, so it checks all the boxes for me. It's mostly GS users who are ultra whiny I've noticed.
Obviously early game is super easy and I personally enjoy the loot gacha of elder dragons more but I am really excited to see what else the game has in store. Cool maps other than sand.

The game does however really need optimization. Graphics and performance are so janky. And I have to get used to the UI and seikret, it's... something.

Close range coating is always unlimited. In this beta you get unlimited power coatings BUT at launch you may not, normally you craft them with Nitroshrooms. Same with bowguns, everything but normal ammo level 1 needs to be crafted. Which is opposed to melee weapons who just need sharpening but otherwise you just slap the monster without consuming limited resources.

I'm on controller so I don't know what the controls are, but the axe has basically the same offset as GS, and the sword mode has one where you hit weapon switch and attack at the same time (R2 and Triangle for me)

I'm kinda pissed that they didn't address IG's annoying extract upkeep issues at all. Buffs last too little, manually aiming the monster's ass for 1 minute to gather extracts is lame and the fact that extract uptime isn't refreshed if you gather more while you have all 3 buffs is fucking stupid. Why not bake in extract gathering into the weapon's moveset and that way incentivize using a wide variety of attacks?

I think it might be because my game runs at 25 fps, but is the kinsect just super retarded?
Multiple times I've aimed it at the monster and it just shoots straight upwards for no reason or somehow glides past it

You can't get rid of it (it's been around for ages after all it just didn't have as much stuff on it), but you can switch item selection back to the d-pad.

Just use focus mode, it brings out your kinsect and gets extracts during your attacks.

The gimmick is much better than Iceborne's or Rise's. To the point I think it's staying in the series for good.

But doesn't that just sidestep the issue? You're no longer aiming the kinsect at 3 body parts, you have to go stab those 3 body parts instead to get your shit until you can finally play the game for around 2 minutes, after which you have to do it again. It's a god damn flowchart weapon now.

Mixed feelings. The gameplay is ok I guess, but the graphics are abysmal to a point I just don't wanna look at the game.

I feel like I want to use a new weapon in Wilds. I've been primarily a SnS user since the very first MonHun game I played, which was Monster Hunter Tri. I occasionally use other weapons like GS or DB, but I wanna just go for something totally different.
How is hammer in Wilds? I could try it out but right now I don't have access to my PC because I am traveling (currently shitposting from my laptop). People always seem to have fun bonking, and one thing I always enjoyed about SnS was the ability to stun monsters with shield bashes to the head. Also I feel like it would be very different because SnS and DB are all about elemental attacks/statuses and Hammer seems very raw physical damage and just smash them in the face.

i have 200 hours in worlds and all 200 are chargeblade. I didnt even know there were heavy and light bowguns till i had to cheese Raging Brachy

Focus mode however, is simply another trash gimmick. It kills any need for positioning by letting you re-aim at anytime. It is simply another casulization that the game did not need to try to appeal to Western golems.

You can hardly judge any other gameplay elements outside of the base combat in the demo. But i'm sure the progression and itemization are no better than in World/Rise.

It's very fast and your kinsect can get mutiple extracts at once. It only becomes a problem on monsters with a somewhat difficult to hit body part like rey's torso.

They may as well just have made the pizza cutter on Charge Blade its own separate weapon. Instead they tacked it onto Charge Blade, made it be completely irrelevant to how the rest of the weapon works AND made it far better to use than the rest of the weapon effectively making the actual Charge Blade replaced by an entirely new weapon. May as well rename Charge Blade to Savage Axe because the Charge Blade part means jack shit now.

You use roundslash and reaper for full attack redirection like in Rise. The new charged stab works for that as well.

The most important thing is that you can infinitely customize your character in the beta so you can see them in-game with various lighting and can tweak it however much you want. Whereas at release they'll charge you to change facial structure after creation.

The charge blade was a perfect weapon in 4U. Proper use of the weapon has you switching constantly between all its forms, and I found myself using every single move in its arsenal, both in sword and in axe, for its "optimal" playstyle on most hunts. Since then, it's all been downhill. GU gutted the weapon once, World made the weapon focused on spamming SAED, iceborne had to add another temporary gauge management just to try and make the weapon as good as its 4U variant, we don't talk about Rise and Sunbreak's CB, and now it's even worse. The weapon just has no flow anymore.

I didn't realize it at first but now that I think about it, it's in the name "focus" mode. When World came out, you had a lot of new players obviously and many of them never turned off that awful "focus" cam. In other words, Capcom "intentionally trained new players wrong as a joke" because MH is not designed for that style of camera. So the new focus mode is meant to be used with the focus cam to try and make these retards capable of aiming their attacks. Any MH player from before World obviously knew to turn that shit off immediately and just play with the normal tap L1 target cam. Focus mode is just new fancy special attack, that's it really.

Balahara has a cool design and I like how it incorporates it's weird physiology into some of the attacks, namely the one where he winds himself up into a spiral and launches towards you. I've only fought one and it was a rough hunt due to me trying out the Longsword on it despite never having picked one up in my life.

Rey Day is great. As a hammer user, I appreciate the fact that his wing blades and tail are weak to blunt, and that makes the gimmick of dissipating his charges feel less awful. He's by far my favorite monster to practice on. Delaying the hammer upswing for the offset attack on him is immensely satisfying, and I've gotten pretty good at offsets with other weapons against him.

Chatacabra makes for an okay punching bag to test weapons out on. I don't have any strong feelings about it one way or another. Same thing goes with the other monster, it's just kinda there, though I do like the attack where it slams the ground and rips it upwards, causing that huge explosion of debris.

While I appreciate not having to deal with load times, I'm not a fan of the hunt/prep setup no longer being completely separate from one another. Temporary camps are another thing I'm not sold on, I'm hoping we can setup one or two camps per zone that we don't have to worry about. Either that or we get some sort of upgrades to our campsites that can keep monsters below a certain power level away from them. Maybe that'll be some sort of reward for finishing the story in each zone and learning about the ecology and monsters that live there.

The point is the game runs like ass not because of the core tech but because the dev team's goal is always to cram as much dumb bullshit as they can in with a barely playable console frame rate rather than making a smooth and sharp game. People only had less trouble with World because their PCs were further ahead of consoles at the time.

I don't know why anyone even expects "next gen" games at 4K to run decently, it just does not fucking happen because there has not been enough increase in hardware capability to improve both graffix and resolution and you can't just release PS4 looking games that run at 4K when most of the userbase is still on 1080p.

Just finished off rey dau for the first time, seems pretty good so far, wanting to do CB but just not having that much fun with it, might go back to switch axe, haven't tried it out yet in wilds but it was my main in world and rise. I am a casual whose first MH was World and put probably 600-700 hours into that, a few hundred into Rise.

All of the attacks are that little bit faster and feel that little bit less impactful along with it. I do miss the different recitals though. The bubbles are nice, and I think are a much better way to implement the kind of damage style they tried to do in rise, They also expanded flourishes so you can get extra notes on the ground pound, and the overhead crush is back as a groundpound combo which is great.
Over all I like that they leaned into the musicality of the weapon, giving more opportunities for more notes, and making the counter a performance as well is a good choice.

With Charge Blade, charging the shield should juist also charge the blade. The blade buff and the charged attack it locks you into are just superfluous when you want to be in axe mode anyway at that point.

I don't really like Focus Mode. Wounding is fine because theoretically it rewards exploiting a weakness in the monster's moveset, although practically they almost certainly bloated monster HP and unwounded hitzone values so that inefficient play is slower than efficient play from games past and efficient wounding and play is only as fast as efficient play from games past, meaning they've only arbitarily made the game harder for no reason.

Which is all to say that I don't really care for the hew gimmicks. However, I will still be buying Wilds.

This for me as well, I was bullying some Chatacabras earlier getting the feel for some weapons and it's amazing getting like 2 wound breaks and a part break and seeing like 30 pounds of shredded skin and flesh fall off them.

There's stuff I like and stuff that makes me cry.

I like the atmosphere in the game, the planes, the ambience sounds that are super horror and cool, the monster sounds that are actually good now, the music is 10000000000 times better than World, I like the monsters shown so far, Rey is awesome, I like its attacks and its presentation.

The combat and gameplay changes are fucking grim however. EVERYTHING combat wise feels floatier and messier. The new focus mechanic is in the worst place of both worlds since its not weaved enough in the kits of the weapons to feel like an actual new mechanic but its also in every tutorial and presentation shit throughout the game with the wounds and shit. The moveset changes are dogshit, the hit effects and vfx/sfx for the weapons are the worst they have been in the entire series and the weapons feel weak as ass. Playing switch axe in this game almost made me cry. Some of the other weird shit like the seamless camp and all the things changed/implemented only for the cinematic shit is also annoying.

I'm glad the shitty ass presentation from World got an upgrade, but the gameplay felt the most confusing and also bad in the series so far.
