Astarion is seen as a dev favorite character but when you find out he is a vampire you have a 0 DC check given to you multiple times to stab him with a wooden stake which instantly kills him. He also kills the player if they trust him with sucking their blood and fail to stop him immediately.

It's the only way to get some enjoyment out of this slop, but not worth it since you're still playing BG3.

That's more a problem with the entire cast and less about Karlach. BG3 really lacks enough agency for your characters and they're pretty quick to buddy buddy with the exception of Minthara who actually provides some nuance with her relationship to the other characters. What's depressing about that is she was originally an "Evil" route character essentially and if you compare it to Dragon Age Origins, you get the same conversation from your front man Alistair. Who's suppose to be the nice relatable one of the group and he'll still call Morrigan a bitch, Leliana a bit of a quack and so on and so forth. And you could find the various levels of enjoyment or displeasure each companion had with each other to really just added to their depth.

Karlach in this isn't any more at fault than the rest of BG3's characters, her only unique sin is being more in your face about it.

Astarion and Shadowhear are full of shit when you meet them early on and keep telling lies and hide who they are. Only later you find what they are or if they like you enough they will reveal to you themselves what they are. On my first playtrough i had no idea that Astarion will reveal his vampire nature but it happened to me in my second playtrough but i don't remember what i did differently exactly.

Laezel likes strong people who take action and are honest. Her and Karlach are the same in that regard. Astarion enjoys anyone interesting or different but is also used to playing nice with anyone dangerous he can benefit from. Minthara also admires strength and honesty. Every time people argue against Karlach it involves someone reducing every character to one or two traits or one or two lines of dialogue. Every single time.

I was very disappointed with the ending (went all-in on Dark Urge), but maybe the new ones they added remedy that. There's a decent amount of changes in narrative though.
The only thing I'll say is when you get to act 2 the evil option would be to ally with that spider guy holding the lantern in the ambush, but if you do that you HAVE to carry a lantern in your weapon slot for the rest of the act - no other lantern contains the pixie that gives you the darkness blessing. A neat option is talking him into handing over the lantern and telling him to walk back to the tower in the dark 'because the absolute will protect him' (it won't), which is evil enough for RP purposes I suppose.
