She is, essentially, very similar to Astarion in terms that both are outsiders who have gone through a long period of trauma. The difference is Astarion acts like a fantasy character and occasionally uses humor but mostly he just has a very prickly attitude, is very cynical, shoots barbs at people, doesn't trust anyone, and his worldview slowly softens over the course of the game if you're a good person to others and a good person to him. Karlach just acts like some teenage Californian who screams really badly. Like her voice actress should not have been chosen for her part.

I don't hate her, but she is easily the second worst companion after Wyll, who is absolutely the worst. There is a massive powergap after Karlach, because Wyll and Karlach stand out as being poorly written and acted, which is funny because the two kind of go together.

There have been many iterations of Mystra. The game even talks about one version (Mystryl) that destroyed herself to save the world/the weave around Karsus's Folly (the entire thing Gale's story is based around)

The prior Mystra was killed during the Time of Troubles. Midnight (mortal) rose up as Mystra following the Time of Troubles, and her companion Kelemvor became the new god of the dead (as the Dead Three were now dead themselves at that time)

Wyll should have just been cut from the game. Instead of Warlocks getting three subclasses, it should have just been one subclass, with Mizora being your canon patron. Astarion is also pretty much a nobody. He was a low tier vampire and is only relevant now because he got brainworm powers and used it to take out his former master. There's literally 12 other vampires almost exactly like him in his final dungeon.

Different D&D settings have different gods.
The Forgotten Realms deities have had several different crises where the pantheon has been shuffled around.
The Baldur's Gate games themselves is specifically around the result of that with Bhaal, and then the Dead Three. All that was the result of the Time of Troubles.

Time of Troubles was basically the overgod Ao (effectively an all powerful deity that is almost a god of the gods) getting angered because Bane and Myrkul attempted to steal the Tablets of Fate from him, and determined that all the gods have not been behaving as expected of deities, so he forced every single god (except Helm, who was the sole god who was allowed to keep his divinity and was tasked with effectively being a guardian to protect the gates of divinity from the others at this time) to walk the mortal earth as their mortal Avatars.

If we want to get meta about it outside of just lore, it seems that Ao was sort of put upon Ed Greenwood by TSR to explain the 1e to 2e transition.
There's apparently some being higher than Ao since the epilogue of the Time of Troubles stuff in the Waterdeep trilogy had Ao appearing before some unknown higher entity asking Ao how how things fared.

Greenwood sort of himself goes with the idea that "Ao's master is the dungeon master" from some post on twitter that I don't have on hand, but that's not anything official. But that other entity is mentioned in novel form.

Since technically Forgotten Realms has portals somewhere that's supposed to connect to our real world (TSR/WotC kind of glazes over that bit of lore), a religious person can feel that this main person is God, and someone who is not religious believe something else.

But technically you can Isekai someone into the Forgotten Realms (and I think it's actually canon that the Earth kids from the old D&D cartoon ended up in the Realms at some point after the cartoon ended)
