You want to know something horrifying. The average Japanese manga and anime fan do not know about Akira, or anything by Ootomo Katsuhiro. Though, it's completely Ootomo's fault; he was deadset on not republishing or transitioning to the digital age, so aside from die-hard fans and collectors, the average teenager isn't able to pick up one of his manga.
Still remember when that one Japanese dude was asking regular Japanese people if they could recognise all of the manga westerners care about, and none of them could aside from Gintama (the only one who recognised Death Note was a female fujoshi).
