I can enjoy happy media sometimes, hell my guilty pleasure are literally Adam Sandler shit but my god directors who've made work when they were depressed vs when they were happy, there's a huge difference. First of all, what are you reading? It sounds like you need to read Don Quixote, a based schizo that goes out with his trusty sidekick and conquers the world. The second half is self-referential to a modern degree, and the humor (e.g., suffering diarrhea while trapped in a rug that people are tossing in the air) is timeless. It's a very human book, maybe one of our best.

It sounds like you're missing the point of Lovecraft, which so many sadly do. If you've never encountered something truly inexplicable (or even wrestled with the sheer insanity of our existence), then you won't be able to understand what it's like to try to put something that defies understanding into words. Lovecraft is great at this. Plus, I really like scenic prose; his descriptions of ye olde Providence live rent-free in my head.

If you want something like Lovecraft but more concise, read "The King in Yellow" (a collection of loosely-related short stories). If you want something that's adjacent to Lovecraft but more contemporary and digestible, read Philip K. Dick — any of his early/middle novels are good; I have a soft spot for "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch." "UBIK" is probably a better starting point, though.

But if you are squeamish about blood and shit I wouldn't recommend it.

It's funny reading the dev commentary in the ge because a lot of them mention not being good with such extreme content, butthurt over having to draw scat, etc.

I've tried Edgar Allen Poe and Lovecraft so far. On to The Count of Monte Cristo, Shakespeare's stuff, and recently read Cyrano. I do like stuff with the unknown and the Colour out of Space was great but the whole time I was reading I was just like "Uhh....he knows the land is fucked, why doesn't he just move? like lmao the family is just going to stay here and go curezyyy, okay I guess?" He reminds me of Junji Itou where the horror isn't really "scary" but while Junji Itou, his horror makes me fucking laugh at how outlandish it is, Lovecraft is just dry like fucking paper. I was reading also the one in the mountain and there was just so much filler dumped on there, it was hard to keep track on what's happening.

I'll give The King in Yellow a try. Phillip K Dick is great.

However, My post was more on modern books though. I've been reading some Murakami, some King, on and off some other western authors and I swear to god everytime they write women like absolute CUNTS. it actually pisses me off reading it.
