The Sega CD and 32X were destined to fail and undermine the Saturn because midgen attachable upgrades were always a retarded niche appeal idea. If they just waited and went all in on the Saturn, they might've done better (ignoring the Saturn's own costly failures in marketing and messaging).

The Game Boy and Advance are right there and did gangbusters despite the Wonderswan being stronger and on the market at the same time giving ever more credence to the concept.
