If you people think this was done out of malice you've become brain rotted by cynicism. It was done because it's good pr and a bit of a flex on the mod team ("here's ours, top that") but bethesda absolutely relies on modders to help sell their games and keep them relevant and was obviously never going to c&d them. Skyblivion can't make money off their work anyways and was already going to have to rely on word of mouth, this changes basically nothing for them except that now when it comes out you'll see a million posts from people with pc's from 2011 proclaiming it to be better than oblivion remastered regardless of if its actual quality.

This is a humiliation ritual orchestrated by none other than Todd Howard.

If you think about it it's a very smart move.

Bethesda knows half of their success is become of mods, and modders. They know their games sell in the long run because of their innate quality and how modders make it a new fresh experience every time.

They also know the remaster is the corporate edition of Skyblivion. They indirectly terminated their project. They also know people respect modders, and several incidents in the past proved they should not try to control it (fallout 4 companys club or whatever it was called, backlash, the weird intro for dlc on starfield, huge backlash).

So they know they might get trashed for undoing the work of modders. Not directly, only retards would do that, but there is an opening to have another backlash. By giving them keys, it shows a strong PR as in "we support modders", but actually it is quite a castrating move : "we have done what you never achieved, so come on play the game and stop wasting time modding this".

So, you have this project of pure passion, blood, swear, and tears that you spent years on, meticulously recreating every bit of the game you love and planning to release it for free for gamers to enjoy?

There's still some silver lining for the Skyblivion project, in that it can take advantage of the years of mods Skyrim has available to it.

Really though, a lot of these mod projects should either try to release something sooner even if its not fully complete or try to expand content beyond just making a 1:1 recreation in another engine for decades.
