The enemies also never feel bullshit or spongy as is often the case for games with leveling systems that aren't highly linear.

Reality is that sense of adventure, exploration, freedom, intricately designed world, open-ended combat are what makes an RPG to most people. Zelda was actually even considered an RPG to most all the way up to and including the N64 games. Souls not only has that, but also tons of traditional RPG elements like stats, leveling, different builds, classes, itemization, etc. It's unquestionably an RPG, it just has a strong focus on exceptionally done combat.

Idk why but I really like the ffx combat system. The ui is very good, the mechanics all work exactly like you’d want a turn based system to function. Without any weird gimmicks almost except for a few qte events with wakkas special move or whatever. The pacing of the game is also very good, I enjoy it all the way through. I could probably play that game a ton more without being bored. It could be improved with more character customization options, i really like the path of exile approach to status ailments and immunities and think it would translate really well to a more item and spell oriented jrpg. But maybe not I dunno, im hesitant to touch ffx at all just because of how much better it is than every other jrpg by a mile. I hate character specific items I guess id like to put whatever weapon on yuna that I want. The poz in ffx also isnt as bad as usual. So yuna really means you nah, because you dont get to date a woman. But Rikku is named after reincarnation, so you can play her again in ffx for an eternity in a simulated hell where a monster has captured your soul and forces you to look at pictures of sex and stress about eating enough food.

Even comparing Souls to the hardest games on their hardest difficulties, there is *still* almost nothing out there harder. Literally just NG2 on MNM (the hardest action game in existence), is all I can think of. Even something like DMD with S-ranks is way easier, you would need to be talking DMD SS-ranks or BP all characters for the difficulty to even be comparable. Then you consider all the insane speedruns/challenge runs in Souls like SL1, no roll, no upgrading, no damage, the game is just the deepest rabbit hole you can imagine in terms of difficulty and replayability. Just such gold standard timeless design fundamentals.

Stop merging RPGs with other genres. I don't want action RPGs, rhythm RPGs or whatever other genre you can just slap some stats and abilities on. RPGs should be RPGS and should be just insane amounts of stat/gear/ability/class stuff. No action input or any other form of gameplay style beyond the idea of figuring out the best combination to solve the problem in the game.
People that are good at RPGs don't want to lose because they fucked up buttons. People good at action games don't want to lose because they're sword is a low level. Keep them separate. At least for the gameplay
Souls is your hitbox vs. theirs in open, 3D space with free flow movement. You can dodge the attacks any way you want, you can put your weapon anywhere you want, it's just about getting your hitbox to line up with theirs. Enemies are aggressive and will independently attack and overwhelm you. Actions actually have commitment and you can't just cancel out of them with an instant parry or i-frame dodge/jump.
Most action games are fundamentally different as they are about magnetized attacks, both for you and your enemies, movement and positioning matter very little, enemies will circle around you patiently waiting their turn to attack, and you can instantly cancel out of almost any action with a contextual parry some instant i-frame dodge/jump.
Add onto that a massive variety of well-designed enemies and bosses that are aggressive and pose unique dangers with large movesets, incredible level design packed to the brim with secrets, hidden paths, and shortcuts, a generous amount of build variety and playstyles, RPG mechanics that are actually balanced and satisfying and don't lead to spongy enemies or one-shot kills, and a co-op/PvP system, and it's a no-brainer why Souls is as big as it is.

Japanese RPG devs need to stop pretending that they live in a bubble where RPGs have not changed at all in the last 2 decades. The best RPGs have done their best to emulate the experience of a large open-ended tabletop campaign where the world reacts to the player and how they want to play the game. Unfortunately a lot of developers (Square) are learning from the wrong place and copying Ubisoft's open world slop formula. The Elder Scrolls series laid down the foundations for what makes a compelling open world RPG, and Baldur's Gate 3 showed just how far you can go with the original CRPG formula.
The RPG genre is so big now that there's a lot of directions it can go, but Japanese made ones feel like they are locked into a very narrow focus, for better or for worse. I think the light RPG genre (often misconstrued as "JRPG") is going the way of the point and click adventure game. It's not a dead genre but the time for its heyday was in the 90s and early 2000s. It's a genre defined by its limitations, which makes it a great option for new game developers learning the ropes, but it's become niche and there really isn't that big of a market for them anymore, which is why Japan has largely moved on from them.
The one huge exception is Pokemon because Pokemon fans have no standards and have been gaslit into thinking Game Freak isn't one o the wealthiest game devs on earth and that they're actually a tiny struggling indie studio with no resources, who barely keep the lights on only because of the unconditional love and support of the fandom.
This is just a symptom of lots of people playing it.
No one plays any versions of DMC in 2025, so no one has time to get bored enough to do those kinds of retarded ass challenges in DMC, let alone get max ranks on DMD.

Pokemon was always excellent and is completely right. Just Red/Blue alone mogged the absolute fuck out of every contemporary JRPG, and people rightly loved it for plenty of good reasons, but the kinds of people who are embarrassed by Nintendo games being good have revised history and have to act like their darlings, like Chrono Trigger for example, aren't actually basic and limited compared to what Gamefreak were able to do on a fucking Gameboy.
Pokemon is like Goldeneye, in that it was a genuinely huge advancement for the genre and well respected by devs, but fake 'hardcore' genre-fags have to act like it was always some embarrassing thing that was just liked by kids at the time who didn't know any better and was otherwise crap.

Iron keep sucks. The now standard expansion was a difficulty increase and overall downgrade. Dlc is too hard.
It's amazingly overrated compared to the rest of the series. It basically is what 'killed' the series, in terms of turning it into "beat everything by pressing a button when an enemy attacks, what's the stamina meter for lol".
The chinks and gooks copied the formula and improved which was something Fromsoft never did and still kept repeating the same mistakes over and over hoping to see whatever unfocused shit sticks. Bethesda at least changes up their samey formula from time to time.
I never played the DLC of any of the Souls games (except BB, but only because I didn't get around to actually beating it until years after release). I 100%'ed them within the first month or two, and I'm not coming back a year or so later to replay games, as I don't really do that.
I did replay Dark Souls 1 a few years back, just because I always found it to be the weakest game in the trilogy and wanted to see if I was missing something. I was planning on beating the DLC, but I was so burned out after just the base game that I never bothered with the DLC, just uninstalled as soon as I beat the final boss.
But yeah, base Dark Souls 2, non-SotFS, playing that shit around launch, couldn't put it down. Fantastic game,.

Mario 1 is absolutely way more technically challenging than any Souls. Souls never demands you move through obstacles while controlling your momentum like you do in it, let along has you play through such huge stretches without respite and resetting your whole progress through the game after only a few mistakes.

Also, you can do almost every type of run in Souls and it is still fun and balanced. It's one of the few games that really strikes that balance due to just having really strong fundamental design.
Bow only is absolutely viable, although most people will use it as a complement to melee. Magic only is obviously very viable, and there is a huge variety. 1H is viable, 2H is viable, shield is viable, heavy armor is viable, no armor is viable, fatrolling is viable, fastrolling is viable, light weapons, heavy weapons, spears, axes, swords, all viable. Hell, you can even do shit like SL1 or no roll and the game still holds up extremely well and makes you think about fights in entirely new ways.

Also, yes, Souls is harder than almost any other action game out there, not necessarily by intentionally being difficult, but by the overwhelming majority of action games just being surface level spectacle shit.
Even to this day, there is not a single game that is harder on its default difficulty just to beat and see the credits. Even comparing Souls to the hardest games on their hardest difficulties, there is *still* almost nothing out there harder. Literally just NG2 on MNM (the hardest action game in existence), is all I can think of. Even something like DMD with S-ranks is way easier, you would need to be talking DMD SS-ranks or BP all characters for the difficulty to even be comparable.
Then you consider all the insane speedruns/challenge runs in Souls like SL1, no roll, no upgrading, no damage, the game is just the deepest rabbit hole you can imagine in terms of difficulty and replayability. Just such gold standard timeless design fundamentals.

Like you could encounter merchants in the field and could either rob them or engage in dialogue and trade. encounter a rigged chest and your intelligence/dexterous characters could take a shot disarming it.
