Whether you like it or not, the game is still turn based because guess what, every character takes turns during combat. It having active elements to make everything more involved does not change that.

It definitely takes inspiration from other games though. The entire picto system basically functions the same as items in FF IX where you grind them out to learn their abilities. FF VIII also let you be more involved with Squall's gunblade for example, requiring timed button presses for his limit break/gunblade triggers. In a sense this isn't all that different to the "QTE" stuff you see here, just not as essential.

I liked Metaphor for what it was and it had a great antagonist, but overall the game overstayed its welcome and just felt like a slog after a while.
They finally had the chance to do something new, but resorted to the usual SMT/Persona reskin anywaywhich ultimately hurt the game more than it helped, like all the horribly written social links that felt way too formulaic and rushed because every single chracter story had to fit into the same restrictive 8 cutscene template, resulting in very inorganic character interactions.

The only big negative I can see in this game is that some facial animations on specific characters like Sciel look very weird and uncanny in some scenes. The other negative is that you can literally destroy some bosses so fast they don't show most of their cinematic attacks and effects but that's assuming you can parry and know how the characters work. If you suck it won't be a problem. I play on expert and the final boss of Act 1 melted, I only saw like 2 attacks go off and it kinda ruined the moment a bit.

I think that's the real kicker here is that the design manages to take a lot of the best ideas from various other games not only across JRPGs but across other RPGs as well and manages to blend them together into a cohesive whole instead of an aimless mess. Two or more good things don't always go good together but here they managed to make them all work.
