Alvin is red herring, Kris may or may not be the Knight but if he has his own agenda it's to find Dess, and Noelle will go grimdark. Whatever the roll Dess has in this mess is impossible to tell right now.

I'm playing Yellow for the first time and enjoying it, but I want to know how is the genocide route? Does it do the Undertale thing where half the bosses are skipped?

In anticipation of the next two chapters coming soon, there seems to a minor upheaval on who or who might be the Knight. One of the more frequent candidates for such theories is Papyrus. He's oddly absent in the game thus far, yet it still seems like he is present in Deltarune. It would be a safe assumption to make that the Knight would be a busy individual, so his absence could be seen as an excuse for that. He's supposedly busy, yet it doesn't seem like he's doing a job or anything of the nature, which further adds to the suspicion. Granted, it's not a lot of evidence, but it's at least something to go on, which is more than can be said for most other characters in the game. Yet, I can't really feel right with this idea. I simply don't feel that Papyrus is capable of being the Knight and the word "feel" is important here. I think the only real way to theorize concerning who is the Knight at this point of time is by seeing the story on a narrative/thematic level, because there is seemingly so little actual evidence. We need to rely on our intuition. We have to pretend to be Toby Fox and ask ourselves, "Who would fit being the Knight the most?" And "Would it be sensible in their character to be so?"

While there are obvious differences between Undertale characters and their counterparts in Deltarune, they seem to still retain most of their original personalities. They basically exist in a "Modern setting AU where the Human-Monster War never happened" situation. Toriel is still caring and maternal, so she's a kindergarten teacher. Alphys is still a booksmart, awkward nerd, even if she's a small-town teacher instead of an amazing inventor. Undyne, the headstrong, determined warrior, is now a devoted cop, the closest equivalent to something like a knight in such a world, who she was more or less in Undertale. Sans is lazy and has a job where he just stands in one spot all day. It's sensible concerning their characters. But how would Papyrus fit into this world?

Papyrus isn't incompetent in Undertale, but it's clear that his childish nature makes it hard for him to be more than a lowly sentry. His puzzles are laughable. He's REALLY naive. Like absurdly so. He's quite a good fighter, but as Undyne herself states, he's too soft hearted to be part of the elite guard. The various neutral endings also reflect this. In the neutral ending where Asgore is killed and Toriel is queen, he's technically captain of the guard, but he acts as a glorified gardener. In the one where Undyne is the ruler, he literally just sits around and acts cute for a job. Even in the one ending where he's a king, Sans is the one doing the real work. Another thing to note is that his age is ambiguous. It's hard to tell if he's actually a child or merely an immature adult. This is all to say that I find it hard to imagine Papyrus working in a demanding job, or even working at all. On one hand, such a person would have plenty of time and freedom to act as the Knight, but I don't think Papyrus has the guile or the mindset to be the Knight for the reasons I've mentioned.

Early in Undertale's production, Toby originally envisioned Papyrus to be a jerkish, neckbeardy person with no real redeeming qualities, as you can see here in the picture I posted. I think Toby might be bringing back elements of this earlier version of the character. I don't think he'll make Papyrus into a huge, asocial jerk, but I think he'll may make him into a kind of NEET or even a hikikomori. This would fit nicely with the common interpretation of escapism as a theme. All of the main characters have some glaring issues or flaws they're trying to avoid or ignore. Kris's seemingly probable NEETdom, Susie's apparently unstable homelife, Noelle's relationship with her family, Berdly's inferiority complex seem to indicate this. A NEET could be the ultimate expression of how escapism can go wrong for a person and could be a good parallel to Kris, who is also withdrawn.

Furthermore, there is the Japanese concept of the "Chuunibyou", a term describing the embarrassing behaviors of middle schoolers, though it can be attributed to anyone of any age. They tend to think they have great knowledge, some unique trait, or even special powers. Hyperdeath Asriel in Undertale could be called a Chuunibyou, because the despite the vast power he wields, it's all expressed as if it came from the imagination of a young child, which it is. Toby Fox is obviously very familiar with Japan and Japanese culture, so he would be well aware of this. This would pair well with Papyrus's wishes to be respected and to assume a position in the Royal Guard, but unlike his Undertale counterpart, I don't think Deltarune Papyrus would even have the combat chops to back up the arrogance.

Here is what I think it would go. Papyrus is in his room, engaging in escapism till the Knight, or some agent of his will find him and offer him to work with them and that'll he experience a grand adventure and become a great hero. I think this alone would convince Papyrus and he'll either be unaware of the destructive effects of the Dark Fountains or even think they're a good thing. At some point in the game, he'll serve as a mini-boss, perhaps acting as a minion of the chapter's boss or even to the Knight himself. The pacifist route would basically be about showing him the reality of the situation, to which he'll defect to Kris and friends, and maybe become an ongoing ally from then on. One thing to note about Papyrus is that I think he'll be able to flow well with the primarily teenage main cast, seeing as they'll probably share a similar level in maturity. This one fact alone makes me think he's the most likely Undertale character to play a prominent part at all in Deltarune. This is all speculation and based on little evidence, so I still wouldn't say it's probable, but I think it might work within the story. I call this theory the "Squire Papyrus Theory".

The Vengeance route in UTY is mostly legit, it does Mettatons one important boss, I think, and you'll probably gonna be mad about their choice, but it has more meat on the bone than Genocide in UT, and the final boss isn't a low-effort joke at your expense. Then again, I am an eternal secondary when it comes to genocide routes, and I am going to stay that way.

If Kris is the Knight why would there be a need for any red herrings? Toby shows you he's the Knight at the end of Chapter 2 if that's what you believe.

Flowey is meant to have the experience of a completionist player who has seen absolutely EVERYTHING the game had to offer before Frisk came along. That would naturally include Fun events. If Flowey has reset thousands of times there's a good chance he'd have the 1/1000 encounter with the mysteryman.
If you make certain assumptions it's not entirely implausible for Gaster to have been the Royal Scientist when Asriel was still alive, but it's also commonly assumed that Gaster was warped/deformed/melted in his accident and the mysteryman is more representative of him after death than when he was alive.

Every character who knows anything about The Knight is almost certainly referring to the same entity. The fact that they are consistently identified as "The Knight" is evidence of this in itself; The Knight had essentially no interaction with Queen and the Cyber World but she still somehow just intuitively knows that the entity that created their world was "The Knight," the same Knight that we heard about from Seam, King and Jevil in Chapter 1. Characters with meta-awareness like Jevil and Spamton identify them as "The Knight," Spamton seems to know too much and has to be silenced. Queen even specifically calls them "The Roaring Knight" before she learns what "The Roaring" is.
I think it's very possible that other characters besides The Knight or Kris will open a Dark World in the future but opening a Dark Fountain does not make someone "a knight," and all evidence still points to the Chapter 1 and 2 fountains being made by the same person.

Up above in the thread people mention that Chara is supposed to be a stand-in for the player and all, but they have their own goals, personality, and entity within the story.

It's honestly pretty confusing to know that the player for Deltarune is 100% supposed to be the same player from Undertale when, technically, the player doesn't exist as an entity in Undertale except for when Chara or Flowey address you directly in the endings.

People kind of speculate that Kris is a mix of Frisk and Chara, but that's only to explain the apparent absence of one or the other (though they might be completely different ages in this case).

I personally think that Kris is just Deltarune's version of Chara. And the only thing we know about Chara is that the second they saw a chance to get what they want, they took it (trying to kill Asgore, then killing themselves when it seemed easier). Which seems to match Kris's behavior of smashing open dark fountains despite being told that it's a bad thing.

Flowey doesn't address you directly, even though everyone thinks he does and it's probably supposed to feel like he does. He uses the name you gave Chara to refer to "you", because that's who he's actually talking to.
