Rain Code was a game with good atmosphere, a few good mysteries, and some interesting themes. It wasn't much of a game, though.
And the biggest weakness: Kodaka ignored his own insight about mystery stories. People like Danganronpa because it's one cast of characters going through episodic murders. Characters stay around so you get to know them and care about them before they start the murder mystery. Rain Code threw that away, every mystery had a new cast of randos like your Law and Order or any tv show, and even your fellow detectives just get a single chapter of focus. So that game wasn't going to grow a committed fanbase like Danganronpa did. Even if you're a girl who super fucking loves Vivia, you have one chapter of a game (and one chapter of a DLC) of interaction with him.

I always found the expedition stuff to go really quick once I got the hang of how it works. But yeah I get why people aren't into it.

The first two chapters should have fully introduced the cast instead of spreading them out one per chapter. Then the full group is involved with the rest

I would say so. But I also prefer every DR game to 13 Sentinels. 13 Sentinels has a tighter narrative, but this is just more entertaining. They’re stylistically so different that it’s hard to compare them.
For me, 13 Sentinels was almost perfect from a technical writing standpoint. It’s like a very impressive classic novel. Kodaka described Danganronpa in an old interview as being like junk food. And that hasn’t changed. And I prefer the junk food. It’s just better at being entertaining, and he’s gotten better at making very colorful and addictive junk food with this game. It’s super overindulgent, which is the reason why it has a large scope. It’s for the sake of having more. While 13 Sentinels has this very complex web that requires a lot of moving parts, this game just wants show you all kinds of random crazy shit all the time. It’s just a neverending Danganronpa.

In conclusion, both holistically and viewing each part in general, I hate Hundred Line. I consider it to be a total failure with even the best of its ideas riddled with design flaws. It doesn't live up to having 100 endings, the gameplay - while fun at first - doesn't develop past the beginning while being intolerably easy even for very casual players, the fundamental design of playing out 100 days is incredibly tedious and invites formulaic storytelling, the tansaku system is inconceivably bad yet takes up an enormous amount of game time unless you actively cheat, the overarching story is overly simplistic with few twists or major developments, and the characters remain mostly obnoxious and shallow throughout.

I write this, however, knowing that many of my close friends are not just enjoying the game, but even loving it. Therefore, the reader of this should be under the full disclosure that there is a decent chance they will enjoy it. Humanity is really complex and so is media analysis. I don't mean to put the nail in the coffin and seal the deal as Hundred Line is bad forever. Instead, I just felt alienated by the unending praise I was seeing for a game I loathe so much, and wanted to offer an opposing perspective with mostly neutral language. Hopefully I have provided some insight into why someone may not like this game. My 1/10 vote is not a joke.

Anyway, that's it. 1/10 game, do not recommend.

It has A LOT more of filler though, as in chunks of game where you're either going through mindnumingly easy tactical RPG battles or lots of free time events.

Just an addendum to this it's very easy to cheese the battle and skip the free time events if you want.
