There's just certain news and guides coverage you aren't going to get any more the same way. Video coverage. You can't put this all on streamers or YouTubers, that's magical thinking.

YouTubers are basically journalists but without being shackled to the expectations of legacy media. This is both a positive and a negative. Initially, I quite enjoyed the freedom of content creators like MatthewMatosis and MrBTongue to bring a unique, unfiltered perspective. As time has gone on though, it's become readily apparent that the natural end state is ceaseless drama whoring and ragebait. This low effort content simply performs better in the engagement algorithms so that's the slop we're left with.

It kind of proves the whole video game ecosystem revolves around Nintendo. They minimized their presence at E3 first. They others followed suit which eventually led to there no longer being an E3 at all. They made Nintendo Directs with lots of relevant info for upcoming games...Basically the exact same thing game magazines used to do with previews. Now video game journalism is dying. It's all becoming Nintendo

The first phase was a naive attempt to expose corruption, which went nowhere because the journos had a total monopoly on traditional media and nobody was willing to give gamers a fair say. So after this, a lot of boycotts and sabotage campaigns began, which were of dubious impact. At the time these were going on journos scoffed and claimed gamers were "dead", believing they had won because they'd so successfully spun the narrative in their own favor, as far as wider media was concerned their version of events was the only version.

This became so prominent that it supplanted official guides from companies like Prima Games (those were some beautiful books, though) and essentially ended the practice of making games arcane so that people would pay for a guide. Then they wrote them on wikis, which they continue to do to this very day.
Game devs can use video platforms, social media, and their own websites to get information out there. It's not as though game journos offer valuable criticism and feedback, or help gamers discover things that they might want to play. They shill for the western establishment publishers (not surprising; they're funded by institutional investors) and run propaganda against the stuff that gamers actually want. That's why gamers hate them.
Independent livestreams are as valuable as anything that IGN can offer because you can see the gameplay, and the successful independent streamers tend to be actual gamers who like the genre. Half of the people who work for the corporate gaming press obviously don't even like videogames. That's another reason why gamers hate them.

I'm not sure that one could really feel you "got to know" people behind the articles especially in the heyday of "big" gaming magazines; many of them basically were little better than advertising platforms and they had a lot more centralized dogma, keeping to the party line. EGM, GamePro etc.. much less something like Nintendo Power (which at least was good at what it did in the early days and was honest that it wasn't about critique) or GameInformer (or whatever the Gamestop owned publication was) , were vectors to show off the newest games from big publishers and advertising.For instance, here's an example of a comic in EGM I vaguely remembered that was part of their deal with advertiser NEC, in order to hawk the TurboGrafx16/TurboDuo in the US - archive.org/details/johnny_turbo/Johnny Turbo/Issue 1/ -

Many were owned by the same conglomerates (ie Ziff-Davis/ZD media etc) and had some overlap with content in other magazines owned by the publishing company. It worked the other way, too - something like a "Men's magazine" like Maxim or GQ may have gaming content lifted wholesale out of gaming magazines from under the same masthead.

Outside of a handful of niche unofficial 'zines in the 80s and 90s, I never really saw that people had a lot of faith in the particular reviewer or their honest preferences. Rather, that sort of thing was left to the nascent Web and Internet, with sites like GameFaqs and individual fan sites or webrings having input outside of what was in the magazines. So yeah, it was a different time but it wasn't as if magazines back in the day were some paragon of honest gaming critique and info; if anything, they were often tacitly understood to be more of advertisements

There were some "less professional and/or earlier in the industry, late 80s early 90s" less formulaic things, but as gaming grew into bigger business when magazines were a big part of advertising, especially given limited Internet users , TV spots were expensive etc.. it seemed that more and more magazines started to operate under conventions that, while you wouldn't notice it at the time, really underpinned the relationship between the game publishers and the magazines for marketing.

For most people, there are outliers who are like horribly disfigured or have crippling issues, usually there is a pretty solveable issue if that's all they care about, if they recognize it or not, and if they want to solve it or not are different stories.

E3 going away is kind of sad still. It had been total shit the 7 or 8 years prior but when they announced it was dead I had this flashback to being a kid and seeing a PS2 for the first time during E3 and in turn being hopeful for the future of video games.

Besides Playboy, Penthouse, Hustler (with at least the first one famous not just for the nude women, but for articles during its most sophisticated era), of course stuff like GQ , Men's Health, Maxim etc. There are now online versions of all of the above and plenty more digital only men's general magazines that may have consumer electronics next to attire, shit about picking up women, gaming, hobbies etc.

Also more or less all "gaming magazines" during the old days were targeted if not exclusively, predominantly at young boys and men. Look at the articles that get shared here, or even advertisements (ie the Command and Conquer Hitler ad, everything having to do with Lara Croft, the GameBoy ad that you're playing with it in bed instead of the naked girl etc) were focused on male teens/preteens, and later 20s.

Gamergate was an actual grass-roots rebellion against corporate games media. Or at least that's what the journos turned it into. It did not start this way and there's no reason it had to become this. People had known for years that there was corruption and collusion, but were growing increasingly dissatisfied as the tone of games journalism moved further and further into preachy activism and away from anything resembling actual games journalism. The initial flares of discontent weren't connected by anything other than this general discontent that existed at the time, but the journos in their conspiracy theorizing, created a unified identity for these separate, disparate groups.

People actually came together under the label created for them, and used it as a rallying point to attack games media. This is what the media tried to convince you was the main show. In reality it was an enemy they themselves created for the express purpose of defeating, because that kind of anger-motivated protest couldn't sustain itself without real victories to capitalize on momentum. So it petered out. But the underlying anger and discontent never went away. The original genesis for everything was still there and it was changing from anger, which the journalists could feed on, to contempt, which they had no defense against.

You can spend ten minutes reading a review or you can watch ten minutes of gameplay. The latter tells you way more about the gameplay loop, fluidity, environments, UI, animations, writing, acting... all of it. Even for the parts that you don't see, you can get a feel for whether the game has good bones.

Once you remove the "review" component of games journalism, what's left? Information on new releases? My wife has been playing Atomicrops every day for the last three years. Prior to that she played Animal Crossing, and before that she played Stardew Valley. I know this is an unpopular opinion on here but your average gaming news article is definitely of a higher writing quality than your average youtube video of a middle aged dude rambling to his webcam for 20 minutes.
Then there's the fact that most youtubers don't have the resources to contact developers for news and interviews so you get basically nothing on games that the devs don't put out themselves, there's a reason most gaming news videos on Youtube are just them reading articles off actual journalist sites.
