I think Gaku is easily the worst character of the game, and the developers are aware of that shit which is why Kako just randomly steps in to say "GAKU MUST SURVIVE" because of course I would throw him to wolves.

What's the most undeserved (unexpected?) tragic/bad end? There's plenty of retarded choices that lead to one, but what are some examples where you think you get shafted out of nowhere.
An easy example would be for example losing a coinflip leading to getting murdered by kako-g

Just finished the killing game route and that was one of the biggest waste of time routes. The foursome ending was kinda funny, but other than that it made very little sense and it felt like they just handwaved a bunch of shit to the side. I can piece the situation pretty well based on what happened on other routes, but they could have at least elaborated a bit on so many plot points instead of leaving them

Nozomi + Takumi

Takumi takes all the ATK UP potions

bumrushes the boss

Whoever is on his field uses the suicide pill to attack

Takumi will be guarunteed at least 200% voltage if his attacks are fully upgraded

Nozomi heals Takumi's fatigue

get at least 3 voltage attacks + Takumi's individual attacks in

Generally though, that can be optimized way more.

Stop eating for a second

I don't think the ATK UP potions stack. But the general strategy is to pop a potion for Takumi and then pop desperation potions for other characters and suicide them until you get 300 voltage. Then Takumi fires his special, Nozomi refreshes him, Takumi fires another one and then repeat. After you get the passive where every death gives more ATK to Takumi, it becomes even easier.
Also stack all the commander kills on Takumi so that his special does more damage and his attacks give more voltage. And upgrade the potions with priority to ATK/Desperation->Agility. Potions are fucking broken in this game

Takumi and Nozomi are on the opposite field from the boss and I already used my spring trap on the previous wave for the previous boss because I didn't think they'd put both bosses in the same spot in front of the shit team, otherwise yeah I've been doing exactly that minus the suicide pills since they haven't been necessary.

Don't forget the attack boost for takumi. Desperation potion is the best item in the game.

She is the cleanup crew after Takumi rapes the brunt of the enemies

Ima is not so bad when you figure out that you can pop a desperation potion with Kako and then with a ATK potion he gets +4 ATK so he starts one shotting most mobs

Literally the opposite. You should max out Deadlights asap and feed her a bunch of commander kills for big voltage. She just blasts the stuffing out of everything with huge coverage 5-damage AoE, huge movement, and can never be fatigued. Then have Jumonji or Takumi kill the commander after she finally kamikazes against it (after having wiped the field clean of fodder, of course).

You're then popping a desperation potion on kako and since they always spawn together you'd be cleaning up mobs you'd be killing with her ultimate anyway. He's decent enough though.

I'm on a second play through on chapter 33, and after I dialogue from finishing the boss, the game goes to a weird state that has two squares on the screen. One is white and the other is a purple flames texture. No one is in the school, and if I go to my room the day resets. I tried reloading the game so I wouldn't have to do the entire fight again, but it had the same issue.

No penalties for death - only rewards. It fundamentally doesn't work as a strategy game. That's why it feels like more of a minigame that was appended onto this massive visual novel.

The problem is...okay, it's "player phase centric." By design, yes. Because you can't really counter enemies on their phase consistently even if you wanted to. There's a single skill for it that doesn't put out reliable damage.
BUT, if on the player phase, you just use Puke Goddess to one-turn the entire map with functionally infinite actions, how is that different from enemy phase spamming with a javelin stack? I'll tell you how - at least Seth can get berserked on a couple maps. Puke Goddess is Sigurd tier broken with none of the drawbacks.

No, there's a revival mechanic between waves. When characters are low on health you can do a supermove that hits enemies for more damage but kills your unit for that wave.

I like the attempt of VNs having gameplay, specially DR with the trials. I dislike pure VNs where it's all text text text.
Sadly this game becomes nothing but text very quickly.

For one thing, when on low HP, characters get access to a personal all-out kamikaze attack that does a fuckton damage with massive map coverage, and costs no AP (action points).
THEN, after they die, they fill up your "voltage" meter by 100% (max 300%), which is worth ANOTHER all-out attack, that does cost voltage.

It's a twofer. Kill a unit, get two giga attacks. You can also spend 100% voltage on another Action Point instead. Dead characters revive after every "wave" of combat, so you can just keep doing this even within the same battle. It's totally silly and nonserious.

you have a global energy bar called voltage.
Once you reach 100 voltage you can ult or use other broken abilities on your units.
However if one of your units is at low HP, you can make them cast an ult for 0 voltage (called last resort), but they die right after. This instantly gives you 100 voltage.
So you can chain last resort -> ult on MC -> refresh MC with healer -> last resort ....until you kill the enemy boss.

Oh this strategy is only viable once you unlock desperation potions, that set the HP to to 1

I didn't like SF at first either, but as soon as I understood that SF isn't about a true 'golden, happy ending' but rather Hiruko and Takumi becoming amoral monsters obsessed with the mistakes of the past, and no longer caring about their friends except as methods to use to end the loop. The reason the SDU was so dumbed down during SF was because she gave Sirei the advanced brainwashing tech, and we know he uses it on all of them (Nozomi even begins breaking down during one of the fights where the invaders start talking), not to mention how they completely disregard Eva in all their decision making until it comes back to bite them in the ass if you choose to run to the Pod. In other routes you find out Hiruko is the direct cause of damn near every single Kill Eito timeline going to shit, and never for a particularly great reason either. It's in stark contrast to, say, Akane from 999/VLR, who also discarded alt timelines like they were tissue paper, but ultimately was working towards a goal of everyone making it out alive. Hiruko causes all this death so she would have a nice memory to think of/not having to deal with something at that time.

As for the G'ie, that's background lore that the writers used to build all routes off of, since SF I can actually piece it together, it's pretty good if not a crazy place to leave it as it's the last route to unlock

They definitely wanted to go in that direction but they either didn't commit or they ran out of time and just released what they had.

For some reason my mind interpreted this as it ACTUALLY being an old arcade game instead of being one those 100000 pixel 'retro' steam games so I thought the plot was supposed to be about Takumi and Darumi bonding over old atari games because the rest of the team is blowing them off

Theres a flowchart, some routes are locked at points until you get enough specific endings. You also only learn the name of the route when you have done one ending in its path, so you are encouraged to take stupid obvious bad end choices once.

Personally, I would give it a 7/10. You won't get the same feeling of playing 999 for the first time but it's still alright.

Even if the game didn't tell me to, I'd have saved Gaku over Kurara as my default choice.
