Yeah, the only unique-to-the-area enemies in BotW/TotK are the cursed skulls in the dungeons and the gibdos, I think every other enemy can be anywhere, so it makes some areas feel less original.

sometimes I wonder how, as a kid, I was able to figure out how to do certain things in Zelda. How did I figure out how to dump a fish in front of it?

I was literally talking with a friend about this silly fish last night, what a wild coincidence. I learned that Jabu-Jabu also makes an appearance in one of the Oracle games, and of course he's a dungeon there, too. I like how the layout is actually shaped like him.
He also makes an appearance in the most recent game; he's not a dungeon but he does WHIRRR some people and you have to rescue them by fighting him. Classic.

The collapsed buildings below and the little towns hanging from the ribcage always fascinated me. Did the whale swallow Atlantis or something? What's it like to live there?
The only other game I can think of with a society living inside a giant creature like that is Xenoblade 2, with the city Fonsa Myma inside the titan whale Uraya. Definitely seems a lot cozier there, I must say.

jabu jabu was stupposed to swim around the map and serve as transportation to some areas. the young link "inside jabu jabu" was an afterthought dungeon and not at all how that part of the game was originally planned. it worked out for the best though because the zora waifu is the obvious choice
