Love the systems at play like rain making climbing more difficult, lightning being attracted to metal, flaming grass being used as an updraft, and so on. It felt like an epic adventure with unlimited freedom. 9/10.

You know what feels the most hollow in BOTW to me? Quest rewards. In OOT you'd help the cucco lady and get an empty bottle. An empty bottle was huge, it meant progressing the main quest as you needed to catch a fish, it meant space for bugs, potions, fairies, and it was the reward for interacting with NPCs and the world.
In BOTW the cucco quest gives you what, rupees? You used to get heart pieces, bottles, items, things that mattered. Now heart pieces are shrines so exploration feels less rewarding, you won't find a piece of heart or an item. You'll find a disposable thing.

I think one of the higher-ups needs to put pressure on the Zelda team(s) so we can get something that was brilliant and made on such short notice.

You can bait with food from stealth and leave a jelly nearby, open by hitting the jelly, weapon merge your own weapon with the dropped weapon of a still alive enemy, light a fire to escape the rest of the mob, summon an archer to plink away while you recover... It's really good and I eargerly await your "this other game does it better" reply

I think personally Star Fox is a really fun game if you sit down and play it. I think, for example, an elementary school kid who plays it without any preconceived notions, I think it would be really fun for them. I think it's also really, really fun for siblings to play it together.

OoT was the best selling Zelda by far at the time. Zelda was never 3d Mario, where the 2d games sold better than 3d. 3d immediately supplanted 2d AND made future 2d games sell worse.
That said, I don't disagree there were people complaining about it (empty Hyrule field, literal copy paste caves with completely random bomb/rain on this seemingly normal area/rock/tree) and, yeah, locked progression that easily could have been more open). But they were clearly a minority that didn't compare to the amount of people loving it from the start.

The original Hyrule Warriors' original proposal apparently was closer to a standard Zelda game though, but Nintendo pushed to make it more musou-like at its core and minimize the Zelda elements to not step on the shoes of the main series.

The issue is that they don't want to structure dungeons in a way where you have to go through several rooms to get to the middle and then more rooms to get to the ending. They want the dungeons to be just like the overworld, everything is kind of "open" and you can choose the order you go in the rooms. I don't know why they think this matter, but ToTK made it clear they see it as core element of BotW/TotK type freedom.

The problem with modern Zelda is its over-obsession with open endedness and freedom. Sometimes a little linearity is okay. Sometimes a little item gating is okay. You don't need to immediately access the entire overworld the second you start the game. Most modern dungeons and shrines and puzzles are designed to never require much more than "put ball in cup" because they're afraid of you stumbling upon it before you have the necessary equipment.
The best part of old zelda games was seeing a puzzle or a strange object you couldn't interact with yet. You couldn't just magically fly past it or brute force your way through it because the game wants to make your own fun. Sometimes you have to just note it down and come back.
BOTW, Echoes of wisdom and TOTK never have those kinds of moments. Everything has to be the same base level of milquetoast, so it all ends up being forgettable.

Let me guess: it's heavily based on ALttP/Link's Awakening and ultimately does nothing unique or well enough to make anyone recommend it over what it's based on. And has 8-bit music despite not being 8-bit.

I am currently. The game isn't Medieval. It's sort of a mix of Paper Mario and Zelda in a way, so it's certainly odd in presentation. I would like to get to a Zelda like game in the future, but to just ripoff Zelda wouldn't sit right with me.

Aonuma was burned out from being in charge of Minish Cap, TP, and Phantom Hourglass at the same time. Miyamoto had to step in. 1st half of TP was Aonuma. 2nd half was Miyamoto. Notice how all the wolf shit disappears in the 2nd half of the game? Because Miyamoto hated the idea.

That group of characters tied to the lead up for each dungeon all get unceremoniously shoved in briefly and pretty quickly swept under the rug (until they 'save' Link from a basic mob of enemies at Hyrule Castle). I think it was mostly the lead up City in the Sky this is noticeable? The whole Ilia memory quest bit.

No that mostly comes from Paper Marios leveling system and slight goofy areas and vibes, it's fully 3D action adventure game with items, overworld progression, dungeons and lots of boss fights. Gameplay currently is similar to Kirby and the Forgotten Land. The artstyle is somewhat inspired by wind waker. I know that can be off putting, but I think my character designs will really shine with the look (They don't look like WW characters)

Twilight Princess had really cool Darknut designs. The titular one in Temple of Time is the coolest one and then the ones in Hyrule Castle and Cave of Ordeals are good too but the Temple of Time one has a cooler helmet and sword.

To me the Zelda games were always about exploration, finding hidden secrets, puzzles, using items to solve problems, etc. The combat has never been the draw. Big open worlds are just shallow and uninteresting to explore, simple as. I won't play another Zelda game unless they make more interesting worlds to explore again. And it would be nice if they put actually challenging puzzles in the games.

The ganondorf mode mostly just makes the early game and Lanayru twilight harder.
It can build up in Cave of Ordeals but the Darknuts are just “poke after they attack” in first phase and then spam super spin attacks or side roll swipes for 2nd phase.
The most annoying enemy in TP are the ganks of the ice soldiers but it doesn’t matter in base game or normal hero mode.

Dark Souls is easily the closest thing you'll find to the "spirit of adventure" you get from OoT. There's nothing else where you have all these strange mechanics you have to figure out, you're genuinely not sure if some random thing is actually the key to some significant secret and any part might end up leading to some new section you didn't know about initially. No Zelda fan should sleep on Dark Souls.

Miniblins were the most interesting thing WW came up with and its bizarre how the series just forgot about them. Like, Bobokins were originally a WW invention, they weren't even a thing prior to that game, and yet the miniblins were the far more interesting enemy since it's not normal for something so fast and hard to hit to assault you in groups in a 3D Zelda. But the series now treats the Bobokin like it was always the main 'staple enemy', which is boring.
Another proof that Aonuma has almost nothing to do with MM is that he left the (now defunct) remake of the game in the 3DS in the hands of Koizumi. Besides leaving it completely out of the official Chronology.

Playing OoT and seeing the eye switches in Deku Tree, or bomb walls in dudongo's cavern, or hookshot points gives you an instance of intrigue and curiousity....eye switches in forest temple for bow....not so much. So you already now know you'll get a ranged tool to solve this (and if you went to kakiro village shop you know its a bow + arrows due to them on sale). Same for longshot...just having 20% more range is kinda really....fucking meh. NOW. Granted. Double/Twin Clawshot in TP WAS very cool because you can now spiderman cling all over. (please fucking dear GOD kill hookshot for twin clawshot, it's so much better. I loathe the hookshot now because it is vastly more limited).
But following above if you played OoT then go into MM, you can tell swamp temple will be bow pretty fast so the excitement is muted. same for pirate fortress and hookshot. snowhead temple you can easy guess you'll either get fire arrows (bow on menu already has 3 slots for element) or din's fire.
At some point over playing this series you understand what item is coming and while interesting the pure joy/surprise is vastly muted.
