TOTK is the worst story I've seen in recent years. I mostly liked the game but what in the god damn, Demon King? Secret stones? repeated 5x, then the ending just shifts everything back to how it was at the end of BOTW so nothing even matters

The problem isn't that it wasn't set up. The whole tea memory with Sonia was probably to explicitly hint at the possible solution. The real problem is that you never had to work toward solution. Easy way to deal with this is to just make a potential bad ending that is dependent on how many Light of Blessings you have from the shrines. Hell, that could be a good way to balance upgrade potential. Sacrifice potential health or stamina to improve your ending.
