I never end up using traditional automatic weapons in games. They just don't feel satisfying to shoot.

Agreed, the base gun every game should balance around is the shotgun. Then you start adding all the interesting stuff afterwards. Like a spray can and lighter, or a flare gun, or a shrink ray or freeze ray. If you really must have a gun that has a high rate of fire, a minigun or chain gun should be it.
Assault rifles aren't that good. Shotguns are better at any range. You can peek out of cover and shoot someone. The assault rifle's sustained dps becomes irrelevant, and they are much easier to dodge compared to a shotgun.

because it's literally the only long range hitscan gun that isn't some peashooter in the entire game + tf2 maps are very hallway focused
It takes more skill to use a sniper than it is to use an assault rifle
sniper: line up the reticle, time the press of the mouse and hope you didn't miss
assault: drag your mouse in an enemy's general direction and hold down fire to win

Sniper: point and click anywhere over the enemy and get an instant kill, be so far away that other weapon types can't do shit against you, so you can miss as much as you want
Assault: Have to maintain your aim on the target for half a second while dealing with him moving erratically and compensating for recoil because the AR requires multiple bullets to kill or absolutely needs headshots, damage also magically drops like a rock over a short distance

TF2 does also just not have assault rifles, which gets around the problem of assault rifles, but I think a big contributing factor to making shotguns balanced is having a time to kill that isn't less than a second.

The shotgun would be better because the first shot is instant, so it only needs to wait for the second shot while the assault rifle would have to shoot 3 more times.
anyone reasonably skilled with the blade can cut a single bullet in half out of the air. only a true master can do the same for shot.
