Sony made a mistake with the Vita, they released it in 2011 two years before a new console rather than developing it in conjunction with the new console which is what's happening now. They have already had their experiment with the Portal, sold 2.5 million and realised to get to the next level it has to do more.

Even accounting for third party we have better offerings aside from the amount of publishers refusing to pay for cartridge space.

The true test of the Switch 2's launch year will come during the holidays but so far it's looking to stand well even stacked up to its predecessor.

Sony themselves are underestimating what will happen with PS5 because if PS6 is too expensive then the PS5 will just keep selling strong right through 2028. 130 million lifetime, more than Switch 2.

Both of those other handhelds will presumably have better performance for their price since Sony and Microsoft are more okay with selling at a loss, especially going into a market already dominated by another company and that makes them appear like a better value. The Sony Handheld probably isn't until 2027 when the PS6 comes out according to current leaks but I think the Microsoft handheld might be next year. The Microsoft one is probably the more interesting one if it can also run Steam and is competitively priced. I think they'll cut a chunk out of the Switch 2's marketshare as it gives PS5 and Xbox owners their own Steam deck type device that plays their library on the go to geek out about in the same way PC gamers geek out about the deck but they won't reach Switch 2's total sales numbers. But if Nintendo wants to make more money, they probably do need to react to actually having competition for the first time since the Vita died.
