In a lesser form, OG Resident Evil 3 had the Gunpowder mixing thing, that let you cook up different sorts of grenade rounds, and even special ammo for the pistol and shotty eventually.

The more different things in your game that are universally applicable, the more you risk something that can trivialize the whole game slipping through the cracks. Artificially compartmentalizing them means you can cosmetically have "more different things" while ensuring that they can only impact a small subset of the game at once.

desert eagles are one of the most impractical handguns there is. Ammunition is expensive, gun itself is expensive, it hurts the wrist when fired, the recoil is redicilous, it's nothing more than a big pp gun for people with small pps.

You start the game with a shotgun, and receive no other weapons. the other "weapons" you would receive would be through various shotgun rounds ranging from 20g, to buckshot, slugs, incendiary, explosive, etc. The shotgun can be upgraded for capacity, fire rate, etc, all expressing how diverse a weapon a shotgun can be.
