I wonder how they'll handle cars and the balance between combat, stealth, and social interactions. Hitman did the latter two very well already but they'd have to make up somewhat for the lack of disguises. The lacklustre combat of Hitman is probably where they poured a lot of their resources.
I imagine they will do separate driving sequences for the cars or the mini-open worlds will be large enough to drive about in them, perhaps both.

Goldeneye ran pretty rough but PD was even worse, it was pretty noticecable even back then.

I'm sure the game will be fine but I don't get the point of Surf Dracula-ing 007 again when we've spent the last 20 years with Daniel Craig. The first two movies were his first big operation and essential baptism as a younger untested 00 agent and then there were such big delays his third film was about him in his mid-40s struggling to keep up with the changing nature of the world.
I don't think there's anything to gain from making yet another James Bond origin story, at least not one that does any better than Casino Royale where it was a novel concept that rebuilt the tired formula. The original Bond didn't need one, neither in the Casino Royale novel proper, or in Dr. No. He showed up, they treated him like an experienced veteran despite Sean Connery only being fucking 32 and off he went to save the world.

Even timeshifted Bonds like Carte Blanche or On His Majesty's Secret Service don't really dwell on it besides Bond being born in the 70s or 80s, and was in the SBS during the invasion of Afghanistan or Iraq. He's just Bond, he eats his scrambled eggs, downs his coffee and then goes to work.

One of the things that worry me. Poorer writers use "origin stories" as a crutch for lacklustre characterisation. They have no other way of showing who the character is except by spelling out their entire biography. A strong writer can define a character by only a handful of actions, like how Indiana Jones is introduced, say, or Sherlock Holmes in the books.

Right but eventually they did Last Crusade whose opening segment basically invented the "legendary IP hero gets all his iconic elements" gimmick that superhero movies and other adaptations are so obsessed with.
The difference of course is that they kept it to just the opening segments, Indiana Jones is a film character so there wasn't any other mass media options just yet, and didn't make an entire movie out of it, but it was arguably the first big move towards the obsession with demythification that 21st century blockbusters are so obsessed with.

Seems like a great opportunity to take over it and turn it into a gamer's game.

My uncle bought me this for my birthday, and I was excited because Goldeneye was so good back in the day. I was trying to take the plastic shrink-wrap off in the car on the way home so I could read the manual (which I loved doing, especially while sitting on the toilet) but the fucker wouldn't come off. My uncle said "taking the wrapper off is the first mission", which was pretty funny and quick-witted on account of James Bond always having missions.
But I was not prepared for how good the game was gonna be. Easily the best James Bond game ever made. Including the multiplayer, especially the map Skyrail.
