Most of the farming and crafting isn't necessary beyond spamming early food to quick heal for a combat system that you don't really have to interact with beyond spamming attack. A majority of the quests have too many steps that are literally just "take steps and talk to x" 5 times over. The best thing about it was that it wasn't buggy, but it isn't really exciting.
The story was okay.
It would probably be an okay game for someone's girlfriend, but they would also probably just enjoy started vally more.

Granted I have only really played Rune Factory 4 and 5. I loved 4 enough on the DS to buy it again on PC to play on my steam deck. Rune Factory 5 worked well enough, just everything about it felt clunky and slower then RF4. Taking a look at screenshots of the original games, the previous ones looked like they were very earthy. Non-saturated colors, all the backgrounds that made up the world maps had a lot of simplistic charm and the NPC's felt very grounded and fit within the aesthetic they were going for.

Then I look at this, the cell shaded look with over saturated colors and character design that says Genshin Impact more than a rough and tough village farming sim with cool monsters to tame and fight. Building mechanics always sound like a good idea, but then you're relying on the player to fill in your basic world design. Not a fan.

I was under the impression that Rune Factory was a series that took harvest moon and added better combat along with more RPG features. This one just looks flat. Taking inspiration from a game that doesn't respect their players instead of looking to their past and just improving on that.

But it has too many game design problems to ignore. Eg.: early crafting recipes required flowers, which are midgame items; some events threw you one day later without any warning (messing with any plans you had for the rest of the day); unlocking farm dragons, if not for us not being able to create monster barns on land, would've been useless both mechanically and plot-wise; barely no post-game content; areas (including the town) felt overly big without interesting stuff in them...
So, I'll wait for reviews. But maybe, just as Trio of Towns was the pinnacle of Story of Seasons and each following game was worse than the previous one, I'm afraid RF4 was the pinnacle of this series. But let's see.

My only reservation is I don't like how bland the town looks. It being fully customizable seems to have sucked out any kind of creativity/personality from the asset designs. The structures all look so simple and generic from what I've seen. The generic NPCs also don't look that great. But I'm not sure if I've really seen much beyond the beginning stages of the first town, so maybe it improves over time.

Genshin(not exactly Genshin it's sort of a system miHoYo really likes in general) uses character swapping, not equipment swapping. You don't swap your equipment, you swap out entire characters for a new one which has a predefined weapon and skill set.

In the marriage event for Reinhard in RF5, it shows him ditching the MC twice to go help the princess girl, which the villagers take note of. They decide to help out their relationship by pretending to kidnap both the princess girl and the MC so that he would have to pick what's more important, his girlfriend or his job.
You end up waiting around in a building for a while until the villagers give up. He never comes for you. The villagers bring you over to Reinhard where he's with the princess girl and explicitly declares there is nothing more important than her.
As a result, the princess girl attempts to dismiss him from service so he can pay attention to the MC instead, but the MC just accepts that she comes second and tells him to go back to his job.
I just thought that was interesting

FLi is a grinding game. You finish the story in 8 hours and then you have nothing left to do except grind to max out the classes. Took me 107 hours to do everything in it other than craft every classes final weapon which consists of spending another 50 hours standing in one spot reloading a zones events because you need 164 material from a boss that spawns once every 20 minutes and drops 1 material

Similar kind of level/skill grinding autism, with more emphasis on farming and romancing NPCs.
And the town building actually matters compared to Fantasy Life i's island building.

So what's Rune Factory then? I know next to nothing about the series except everyone seemed to hate 5.

RF5 had an excuse in that it was never planned and simply tacked on after the fact at xseed's continued insistence, but with GoA planning it from the start they could've come up with something that could live with the series forever.
