From what I remember, when the game came out people were going through both scripts, whatever, and then Windii and other parts of the community started noticing "wait the Japanese these characters are saying aren't even remotely lining up with anything here." To be expected, differences of West and East scripts, until people started delving into it and the JP text and it's like it was written by ChatGPT or some machine translator. Ken Pontac and Warren Graff were shit Sonic writers, but they were the Sonic writers nonetheless. Ian Flynn's position hasn't changed this; if anything it just shifted the balance even more in favor since the majority approve it compared to the endless pants shitting about the meta Pontaff era.
But I do think the Pontaff era is responsible for the people in this thread shitting themselves about the west, because it basically was ammunition for them, especially with how Forces tweaked a bunch of things in Japan to make a little more sense and be less retarded. .. but then you had the prologue comics that were western-only that contextualized how Forces got to where it starts, so it's still western-focused despite that.

this is unlikely because for promotional reasons it does make sense for SoA to promote the IDW comic over the Archie comic because the IDW comic is still relatively new and "mostly" game-centric, the Archie comic was just too old, the barrier of entry was just way too much for any new fan, and in general there was a divide in the fanbase because even at its best, you pick any issue of the Archie comic and there's maybe 1 or 2 game characters in there, the rest of the cast is made up mostly of OCs. It's also a clear of a change of priorities within Sega because before they were happy to let the comic be whatever it wanted, but with Sonic Boom and Generations there was a huge corporate push to "standardize" the brand, now with the brand under their leash they can let SoA "experiment" with whatever method deemed necessary as long as it points back to Sega's view of what Sonic should be tone-wise. The comic is like that, the new games are like that, and the movies are like that.

I can't be sure unless I actually read the supposed "golden age" of archie again, but from my recollection, despite the insane interpretations of some of the characters and wildly conflicting characterizations, 2006-2012 Archie sonic reads COMPLETELY different from 2013-2017 shit, which also reads exactly like IDW which is running to this day.

Nicole was a really popular character when Anon Babble got ahold of the comic so in response Ian made a whole Sonic Universe arc about her where she doesn't even act like the character people liked, was a background character in her own story (it's mostly about sally), and got soft-hitched with Sally with Ian bragging about it on his podcast.

That's another issue I have with Ian Flynn; he'll big up these characters with backstories that sound more tragic and fucked up than even Shadow's on paper, and the moment-to-moment writing of them just doesn't match it, so why even bother? It's like he's writing it for the sake of getting those "Top 10 UNEXPECTEDLY DARK Sonic Comic Moments" lists out to trick people into buying copies.
