Awakening and Fates characters get a lot of love because they reached a much wider audience. Those games have always been heavily criticized for characterization compared to the ones that came earlier or the ones that came later.
Not everyone is a winner in older FEs and there're a ton of characters with zero personality for sure like the serious christmas cavalier in any given game but a lot of old characters only stayed in the greater conciousness of the Fire Emblem community because their writing was strong. If I had to put it one way, I'd say that the highs were higher and the lows were lower in the older games than they were in the 3DS era where most everyone is functional but characters pretty much never see any development or more than "their gimmick and their backstory" in order for the wide support system to function. No one from that era really stood up to the test of time after Three Houses came out with its more tightly written cast, but Lachesis or Joshua still get a lot of respect decades later.

Alright so, everyone hates mounted classes because they're stupid, op, and I hate them, so I had this shitty idea to balance them.
In order to solve this we expand the mounted system. Mounts are now actual units with their own unique stat system and give different bonuses for things lile mobility and charge damage, and can be killed. Each mount comes with its own unique stats, some might be better at flying across the map and some might be better giving a charge damage bonus, etc, they're like mini characters. They're also expensive as fuck to replace so your wyvern knight can be a god lategame if you bought a good one, but if it dies, then good luck buying a new one. Because you can lose mounts, this now means all mounted classes can dismount and separate from their mount, leaving it exposed.
Each mounted promotional class gets a unique variant for their mount with unique bonuses, but every promoted class will be be able to separate, lowering the rider's stats in the process, and send it away to do other shit, like carry an ally somewhere. This is to encourage risk/reward behavior.
Classes like Wyvern/wolf knights mounts will get the ability to attack, while other mounts get the ability to carry equipment or give buff to nearby units.
The idea of the system is that the player starts with shitty, expensive mounts, but can replace them later on. It provides a good gold sink and another mechanic to strategize for with your gold. If you want a god tier Wyvern knight in the late game you'll have to pay for it, and still be careful about using them instead of charging in.
If you want you can add in a mechanic where enemies can capture your horse and use it against you, and you can capture enemy mounts, but that might be adding an unnecessary step in an already convoluted system. On the bright side, you can capture those sick unique looking boss mounts.
Thracia is perfect and solved the mounted issue already.

Lost Kaze and Charlotte in ch13 of my conquest lunatic ironman. Thought a Kaze pair up could draw Reina's group with a shield gauge up without dying - and he could - but there was a third cavalier that could reach him just above the house and I couldn't see the tiles and he died. Charlotte died after I miscalculated the Scarlet kill and was forced to take too many actions to kill her + her retinue + the cavaliers on the bottom part, leaving 2 cavaliers alive that killed her.

The class cap is not an issue, you could simply reclass your benchwarmers and you would have plenty of space. However, horseman is the class you put your high-stat male characters in whereas swordmaster's high speed base can carry your lesser units.
This is true but the FFT games are also broken so easily if you know what you're doing that the only way to have a fair experience is to arbitrarily gimp yourself.
I have this problem with newer Fire Emblems as well but in general, the series always appealed to me more than others because it's just a really tight, concise gameplay experience. Clear map. Go next. Get unit. Check class.

If you're new to game design, then start small and stick to the basics. It's not uncommon for new devs to chase epic stories and crazy unique ideas only to get overwhelmed and end up with a mess.
There is nothing wrong with sticking to something short and simple to just get a hold of the basics and then expanding once you know what you're doing.
In this case, don't get fixated on making a 40 chapter long epic game and story with unique mechanics and oodles of skills.
A simple story that lasts a handful of maps will suffice. Think of lyn mode I'm fe7 or the SD tutorial. Its only about 10 chapters, simple, and tells a simple story.
That being said, your audience would be people who have played fe games so it doesn't need to be TOO simple.

I find that Wade is okay early on thanks to his bulk and can get pretty useful if he gets decent levels, but falls off a cliff the moment that you enter the Western Isles. Wolt has to be scrimblo'd to be used at all imo, and he'll still suck.

Andaron Saga reminds me of tabletop game horseshoe theory. You have the population that plays DnD and friends with special snowflake characters and think combat wheelchairs are awesome and that savage orcs are bad. But then you have the guys on the other end who play salt of the earth human fighters that have an aggressive lack of personality in protest to that, and on the DM side they run campaigns taking place in the world of piss where everyone is a rapist and a bastard because they learned history from dark fantasy and have never opened up a textbook.

I beat 27 but got raped by the aids maids. I had to deploy all the cannon fodder and sack them to beat endgame.
Overall the game was braindead until Sakura, which was the first map I had to really utilize map positioning to avoid dying as enemies could deal enough damage to kill her for the first time. Hinoka was difficult as a wyvern lord, so I reset and switched her into ninja and stat checked the enemies. 27 was easy as I just warped around using the staircases and healed with the fruit knife while the enemies ran to the new staircase. The maids also ran up to garon for some reason so I killed them all for free without having to deal with the bulk of the enemies.
Inevitable end kills solos unless you are willing to get replicate and pretend you're playing with multiple units by using the same rescue strats. If I found Kagero's Dart for 20 extra avo and got the 3 robes to have 59 HP, then I think she may have been able to solo since the avoid rates would have been doable.
All in all it was a fun time.

You can totally solo everything after 10 up to endgame with ease. So I guess it's a little bit different from average FE.
