Should Dragon Quest XII be the last new entry in the series (outside of remakes)?

DQ seems like it has been torn for years on continuing the tradition of never making drastic changes or embracing changes. The desire for growing the audience seems to be fueling this internal dilemma. Square-Enix has expressed concern the numbering system of the FF series is cutting into sales, DQ has the same way of numbering mainline entries. Toriyama has passed, Sugiyama has passed. 2/3rds of the main team of DQ are gone. Would it even be the same trying to move the series forward without them? Is this a good opportunity for S-E to retire Dragon Quest, avoiding controversial changes to that franchise and freeing up resources to make a new IP? The existing DQ's made under the banner of Horri, Toriyama and Sakaguchi could also still provide remake/remaster fuel for years rather than making a new entry with no involvement from Toriyama and Sakaguchi.

Nujapan has shit taste therefore DQ12 will suck ass
Franchise peaked with 9

They still sell like hotcakes. More likely you’ll see the torch get passed, but maybe not until the 4-6 remakes.

DQ seems like it has been torn for years on continuing the tradition of never making drastic changes or embracing changes.

excuse me?

What is it with you faggots wanting SE to stop releasing games

Franchise peaked with 9

9 is incredible. I started a new playthrough but paused that because I still have to finish VII (I'm playing the 3DS version, 38 hours in) and with the 1+2 remake around the corner I really need to play the 3 remake soon.

9 was going to have real-time combat, 10 has real-time-ish combat, 11 introduced that "compromise" option of being able to move positioning during combat and while fans are divided on what exactly was meant, when DQ 12 was first announced it was said some sort of action element would be incorporated to the combat system.

It just might be time for S-E to make a new AAA IP rather than continuing DQ under new hands who may not do the series justice.

2/3rds of the main team of DQ are gone

horii and his team are DQ
Sugiyama and Toriyama's work was mostly done by the time DQV came out realistically

The series is still being handled by the game fucking guy newfag.

Haters gonna hate

Is this a good opportunity for S-E to retire Dragon Quest, avoiding

Why would SE want to retire one of their best selling franchises? Are you an idiot?

controversial changes to that franchise

DQ12 won't be turn-based. Does that make you mad?

mechanical changes between have been a tradition as for long as the slimes and yggdrasil leaves have. that's not new.

Toriyama's official successor Toyotaro will handle the designs for DQ XIII

>controversial changes to that franchise

DQ12 won't be turn-based. Does that make you mad?

If it was something like a snappier version of DQ X's combat I wouldn't mind but I'm not sure how their core Japanese customer would feel about it. Which is the issue. I worry a step towards appealing to the potential Western customer will hurt the hold they have with their Eastern customer (the heart and soul of the franchise).

Either come out with an enhanced remake of Sentinels or direct me to a good romhack of it so I can play with my friends again

Toyotaro has nothing to do with any Toriyama related works outside of specifically Dragon Ball Super.

It should end with this, or continue with a spiritual successor, but the suits are going to continue this series until all life on earth ceases to exist. Just like Dragon Ball is going to continue without Toriyama once the Lawsuit is settled. It's just fanfiction that Toyotaro or the Suits at Shueisha will pull out of their ass, but that won't stop anyone from CONSOOOOOOMING TRADEMARK.

Imagine if someone else just took over for Michael Jackson after he died and just continued like nothing happened. Soulless slop's ahead.

Toriyama worked on Dragon Quest a couple of days every like 5 years...

You guys realize Toriyama's contributions to DQ following 5 were minimal, right?
He did a couple lead designs and some key art and left the majority of the time. Most of the key art within 11 was drawn by assistants.

The sales for Dq11s are incredibly good so I can just hope this convinced square enix to keep the games turn based

Every DQ thing sells well, Japan doesn't actually care that much about the gameplay.

DQ XI is a masterpiece. I need to make time to replay it.

People talk as if Dragon Quest is always the same thing, but the games are radically different. Compare, for example, DQ3, DQ5, DQ7, DQ8, and DQ10. The experience each of these games offers is radically different, with only a few fundamentals being shared.
I hope that DQ12 deviates radically from DQ11. I liked 11, but I don't want another linear, narrative-focused adventure. I want an "open" world. One of the only genres where open worlds really add something is RPGs, and Dragon Quest has had notable open worlds that allowed for a lot of experimentation and replayability (DQ3, for example), so there are no excuses. Make a DQ12 where you can make your own decisions on how to explore a big, interesting world, and I'll be happy.

10 was kino even if you hate the format. XI was still decent even if act 3 was a disappointment

You’re absolutely right. This trend of crediting a single director is Reddit. Chun, Level 5, and all the studios are Dragon Quest.

combat of dragon quater its that simple

the franchise peaked with X actually

So these numbers include the original release or is it s the s version only if it's exclusively s numbers only last time I checked the original version sold like 5.5 million which makes the total 14 million units sold this can't be true right.

It's combined probably

eh, I didn't care for being a cuck to a female hero but the game got a lot better when you finally step outside of the hero's shadow.

Level 5 used to be so good, yet they somehow made the best DQ, VII, and also the worst, IX.
And now they're merely a Kusoge throwaway studio.

Didn't they release the biggest game of June already?

People talk as if Dragon Quest is always the same thing, but the games are radically different

Most people who talk shit about DQ have obviously barely played it. The series has constantly refined itself, experimented and introduced new elements, but people complain basically that the series isn't like FF, which basically throws away the gameplay for something completely unrelated every game, and so has no core mechanics at all.

The shit westerners say about DQ is borderline crazy. According to these people, there are apparently tons of RPGs "just like" DQ, but DQ is just a more generic version of them or something. So I have to ask, what the fuck are these games and how can I play them? Where are all these other JRPGs that actually offer the freeform world full of interesting shit and meaningful exploration that DQ consistently does, because most of the genre is nothing like this and tends to shove cutscene after cutscene in me face. The 'exceptions' tend to consist of pointlessly bloated MMO style open worlds full of fetch quests and random nothings.

They made Nightreign ?

Fantasy Life i.
Did very well for a game that nobody had heard of prior to its release, and they have the biggest Inazuma Eleven game yet coming out this month or next month if I recall, plus the Yo-Kai Watch spiritual successor on the way (and the new Layton. They got a lot).

yes, all Kusoge, exactly my point

11 was very good, especially how big it was, and how the game seemed like it was going to end halfway through only to take a dramatic, and dare I say, absolutely kino storyline turn

You just talked about Elden Ring

No at worse they could adapt the MMO to single player games and no, that offline shit with chibis don't count

Toyotaro art is disgusting

file.png - 640x975, 1.57M

The MMO is designed to be an MMO.
This begging for a single player version is only ever done by people who haven't played much of it and don't realize that fact. It's a social game.

yes but western release when

Never because there's about 20 DQ fans outside Japan and you would need thousands of users to support an MMORPG of DQX's scope.

I want a Rpgs fuck you

12 hours post game

sounds fun

DQ XI sold extremely well and people are starved for a new MMORPG

DQ XI sold extremely well

Primarily in Japan.
I'm fairly certain Japan still makes up 80% of the current sales for XI.

and people are starved for a new MMORPG

They aren't.
The primary MMORPG userbases are divided into FFXIV and WOW.
There's no point for SE to launch another MMORPG when they already have two, including the current most successful one.
DQX itself as an MMORPG also has no draw for new users as a lot of what it does is already done in other ongoing MMORPGs. The only appeal really is it being Dragon Quest- which doesn't matter outside Japan.

The new Layton

Selling a collection of brain teasers only seemed to work on the DS.

I don't think Horii is going to make an open DQ ever again. He talked about making DQ11 open world at one point, but relented because he didn't want players to get lost, and aside from that DQ11 was already an incredibly casual experience within the series without the self-imposed challenges. Ever since DQ5 the series has only become increasingly more plot focused with less emphasis on exploration.
If you want an open ended, non-linear JRPG with choices, your best bet is SaGa, especially with the Romancing SaGa 2 remake from last year. It's the only JRPG series that's really trying open ended progression.

Oh ok you're a XIVtranny I understand why you're retarded now.
The game sold about 9 million units as far as I know and 50% were outside of Japan.

No at worse they could adapt the MMO to single player games and no,

This is absolutely what I want and I agree the chibi offline version of it doesn't count.

nope

A new DQ without Toriyama's artstyle isn't DQ at all, and I imagine nowhere would feel as strongly about that as Japan.
And nobody, NOBODY, will to be the one to want to try to fill in his shoes.

I imagine this a major reason why we haven't seen anything yet from XII and slightly testing out new styles with the remakes.

Series should at least pause for a good while. Im cool with some remakes, DQ4 HD-2D would be dope and US release of X would be nice

SE releasing X in the west

Ha, good one anon.

Not mad, disappointed. You'd think after the backlash with them attempting this with IX they wouldn't try to turn it into another shitty action game like SE did Final Fantasy

VII was overrated garbage. Your opinion is shit

Why would SE want to retire one of their best selling franchises? Are you an idiot?

Because everyone who made it what it is, is either dead or dying? Because any changes to the DQ's formula or design would result in riots in the street? Not to mention Japan usually retires things out of respect for when someone important involved passes. And DQ's whole identity is being the "familiar" RPG series, something you can always go back to and have little change

All that seesm to be crumbling, and something has gotta give.

you see, you made a big mistake by seeing a game as art. it's just a product for people and people just want more of that product. they don't care who makes it as long as there is a game that has the dragon quest logo on the boxart and on the title screen.
no different than pokemon tards, really

Nah, Toriyama had disciples and a studio, they are gonna handle it. The style won't go away since the Japanese liked Toriyama as well.
Sugiyama did compose songs for DQ XII, so this will be his send-off title. It's unusual for him to compose during early development phases, so you can make an assumption that he had a feeling something was gonna happen.

It should be cancelled. Let it die with dignity. XI was the perfect way to end it with it tying back into III.

all 3 of the main team have been washed for like half the series at this point. the series might actually have a chance at being good again now that theyre finally dying off. though this is square enix were talking about so not really.

I'm not into the idea of reusing Tori's artstyle for future games now that he died, it would feel like a pale imitation (even if he already didn't do much work in newer games, now is more clear). No idea who would make for a successor.

Oh ok you're a XIVtranny

I don't play XIV because I don't play MMORPGs often, let alone ones based on franchises I don't care for. I mentioned XIV because it IS one of the biggest MMORPGs currently.

The game sold about 9 million units as far as I know and 50% were outside of Japan.

Where has anyone said "50% of this 9 million was sold outside of Japan."

Yes, it should end with XII. I genuinely don't trust the series with anyone else after Horii leaves.
There is plenty of room to do remakes in the future that would profit. Like fuck man, imagine every game in the same graphical style as XI.

They could've easily given us offline, but seeing as they didn't, I'm convinced that X will never ever see the light of day in the west in any way, shape, or form.

Offline exists purely as an intro to the main MMORPG.

At 90 years old, if you don't have a feeling something is going to happen you are either really lucky or really dumb.

I thought it covered the whole story before any expansions?

Jesus Christ how awful
Yes, it should. 2/3 people are dead. Horii could just start focusing on remakes and leave the main series identity alone.

By remakes I meant spin-offs.

The main numbered series should be retired. If you want to continue Dragon Quest without the original team then make a sub-series with a subtitle or a new IP.

Should it be the last.

yes, because the old guard is dead except Yuji Hori, and I think they should end Dragon Quest and start a new franchise in the same way they did Dragon Quest.

I know it may sound odd but get Oda to do some designs for the game, like One Piece or hate it, the world has some pretty crazy/creative and imaginative places, and I can think of nobody better then them to help Capture Toriyama's creativeness.

Call it Dragon Warrior or some shit, I dunno fuck you who cares gaming is dead.

Gonna be Oda

Any of the OGs left? I think I heard that the music guy died and Toriyama died too.

Level 5 were code monkeys for DQ

spin-offs.

Be honest. Outside of Monsters and Rocket Slime, are DQ's spin-offs really worth giving a shit about?

If any current artist can fill Toriyama's shoes, it would be Oda. But I'm pretty sure he's just doubling his efforts in finishing OP before he dies at this point.

Heroes 2 is excellent

finishing OP before he dies

Has his health not improved?
I thought he was supposed to learn to take it easy to, ya know, not die.

Because any changes to the DQ's formula or design would result in riots in the street?

You dumb niggers really believe this made up story about DQ being some sacred cow in Japan. It's not, there was one sensationalized story from the fucking 80s pushed by Enix as marketing.

Offline is specifically a product for minors who want to experience the story of the online version and not be bound by the play restrictions placed on child accounts.

builders is peak

It literally has an option at the end to transfer your save to the online version.

It's relatively normal last I checked. Still, he's not getting any younger, and he's said as much he really wants to finish OP before anything happens to him

The builders games are good because they subvert the stories of the games they're based on

Heroes

Eh, something about it doesn't sit right with me. And muso games don't fit DQ

Fuck this thread and the retards in it

I just dropped in this thread to say I fucking love this serious, hope they continue making games and that I will be there to support every single one of them.

Great review.
Heroes 2 specifically is an action RPG much less than a musou game, similar to P5S

DQ is now outselling Final Fantasy, so I doubt it

DQ is now outselling Final Fantasy, so I doubt it

If a very naughty thing to tell fibs you know

Yes. It's a product designed create long term players in minors and then transfer to the online version when you're old enough to do away with the child account restrictions

It's relatively normal last I checked.

That's good. Not for OP, but just for him in general.
I enjoy his work, but the story finishing in 2 years instead of 4 (or whatever) isn't worth his health.

Good, hope the greedy kike fucks go under for their greed and trickery with XI.

DQ would be fine if they stop trying to modernize everything
it's a simple game series, just stick to simple ideas

dq:dai as manga/anime looked good and dragon questy enough even for what was originally made without toriyama for it
it'll be fine, you don't even need that specific guy, just get people who have played dragon quest (whoops that's everyone that would be in game development in japan) to think about their experiences with it

Dai no Daibouken is more FF than DQ what the fuck are you talking about

No, it's a good opportunity for Dragon Quest to evolve. More often than not remakes and remasters are just the death of creativity.

Nah, they need to make XIII for PS6 so that Sandland panel can become real, still, that's assuming PS6 will support physical media

Heroes 2 kinda sucked.
Heroes 1 was excellent.

more FF than DQ

Dai didn't need to consult the elemental crystals to job change and then ride an airship to the moon.
I fucking love old FF airships though

BUILDERS 3 WHEN?

Building in Builders 3 really brings home how bare-bones and time-consuming shit is in minecraft.
Your resource-gathering never really gets better, you just end up making insane, mob-abusing farms.
Your building abilities never improve at all. Building a bridge from at the end takes as long as at the start.
I guess you can build a giant redstone tnt-duper to gather resources, but that's not as fun as just riding a golem.

minecraft never truly left its alpha stage. notch didnt finish it and microsoft bought it thinking it was a complete game.
games like terraria showed you quickly what things were possible with the formula. games that expanded on every single element that was found in MC.

I want Builders 3 to have an alchemy system with transmutating blocks with magic spells. I also want DQ3's personality system and job system with both civilian and adventurer jobs. I also want a better cooking system where you learn recipes again but still have room to experiment.

I hated the winter land in DQ builder 2

Game imprisons my bro

I can't tunnel him out because magic walls

I tore down everything I built in that shitty town. Let them all sleep outdoors with no food.

Thematically I get Moonbrooke. But it still hurts to suffer through it. Also the snow puzzles are the worst since you have to wait for them.

Your resource-gathering never really gets better

Your building abilities never improve at all

Honestly I like it that way. The simplicity of Minecraft is what makes it the best survival crafting game imo, even in its vanilla form.
When it comes to modding even, I really prefer when mods don't add too much, and I definitely don't like the automated ones that generate thousands of resources for you.

I agree with you both but it didn't ruin the game for me.

I've been wanting to give it a second go with those hard settings everyone talks about

It should have ended halfway, the actual halfway and not the one you're thinking about though

the old heads are dying end the series don't let new people take over

Dragon Quest is the one series that should actually have new blood take over eventually as an ultimate litmus test of whether Japan, and the Enix side of Square-Enix, can actually continue into new generations without crashing and burning under new leadership. If Dragon Quest can't be managed or made properly with new folks, then fine, let it die, but DQ of all things was the biggie that really started JRPGs as we know it and inspired competitors and generations for almost 40 years - it's time that sooner or later, like from Ortega to Erdrick, Pankraz to Madason, the torch must carry on to the hands of those who came after and it's all up to them from there on.

dqii.jpg - 624x356, 94.01K

toriyama and sugiyama are gone but yuji horii is still goated so we might get a couple more gems headed by him. after his passing they'll probably do more spin-off stuff until they put together a team they feel is confident to carry on the mainline series

The suffering in Moonbrooke really made Malhalla feel great to finish. Sadly the ending was too good I put down the game satisfied. I've done post game before. But I don't want to anymore.
