One of the things I liked the most from Switch cases was that you have so much space for the art, now not only the top is taking all that fuck ton of space, the bottom will also be covered by all the legal information.

They've made such a mistake. They're trying to compensate for how many parents couldn't distinguish between the Wii and the Wii U and thus never bought it for their kids, by making it very difficult to miss on the game covers that these are for the Switch TWO, the NEW one.
What they didn't realize is that parents SAW the U part of the Wii U, they just thought it was a deluxe version of the Wii because it has the same fucking name. They've made the exact same mistake. They shouldn't have called it the Switch 2, they should have called it something entirely new.

When it's time to buy their five year old kid a console they are naturally going to buy them a 'Nintendo', and they will be vaguely aware of a 'Switch', and when they ask the gamestop employee to buy a Switch and he says 'Switch 1 or 2', NOT 'oh you want a Switch, are you sure you don't want (newest console with new name entirely)?', she will ask 'uh what's the difference between Switch 1 and Switch 2?'. The point is they waste resources making these key versions no one wants, that will sit around un-sold, when they could have used that money towards producing actual physical copies, even if just a small print run, that people would actually be willing to buy. SD cards have a really slow read/write speed and degrade, since the games are running off the cartridge they need to be high speed +high endurance. we're at the point where it's more akin to having an SSD for each individual game

it's expensive to desperately latch onto severely outdated technology, all roads point to a digital future. The demand for physical is rapidly shrinking, and they're required to charge even more money just to maintain the existence of physical.

Cartridges are probably dead after this gen, if they don't die off during it. Discs depends on how much Sony wants to keep shilling their movies physically but I think streaming services have destroyed physical movie sales so maybe Sony throws in the towel there too and the PS6 goes digital only with no disc drive attachment.

Nintendo probably wants to maintain their retail presence so I can see Key cards becoming the norm.

I agree, key cards are going to be the norm this generation, nevermind next generation, for basically everything 3rd party. PS6 will still offer a detachable disc drive for the sake of backwards compatibility but there will never be another console with a hard attached disc drive.

The original disc PS5 worked out of the box, the PS5 slim with the detachable drive needs an internet connection to authenticate the drive during initialization/if you factory reset. I imagine that original PS5 model is the last Playstation to be an offline console.

I wonder if Shine Post uses the Game Key as well, if it doesn't then that's some heavy Japanese bias if the games exclusive to Japan release on real cartridges.

I guess it depends on how "instant" the keycard is. If it downloads directly without asking for a fucking Nintendo ID login, then it should theoretically be fine.
But this is Nintendo, so I can already imagine it's going to have caveats - you're supposed to be online for the first time the game launches (you gotta DL it in the first place though, so it does make sense)

While the mass consumer attach rate has declined, there actually has been a steady increase in sales as of recently for physical media options. You actually have places like Walmart increasing the sizes of some of their dvd/bluray/vinyl sections, as opposed to how they had been decreasing them. I think physical will still exist for a long while if this trend for the aficionado market keeps a decent market presence, even if it requires something like an external drive. Companies can get away selling to both markets, just like how you have people happy with just streaming episodes of a series, but companies still make complete box sets with bonus features for the hardcore fans.

Every single third game other than Cyberpunk that I've seen uses it so far, it's really fucking insane to see the third parties all instantly flock to it. Unless Cyberpunk sells 10 million copies on Switch or some shit, I don't think there's any hope for third party games on the Switch 2 to be on cartridge, which...defeats the point of not just buying a digital only handheld instead. The only benefit is being able to receive those physical game keys as a gift.

That's a really good question, I want to say that at worst you'd probably need to have a Japanese Nintendo account but that might not be necessary depending where it downloads the games from. If the US store doesn't have the files for those JP games then it might be a pseudo region lock(easily surpassed by making an account for the other region).

No, anon. this is different. It's not like the switch 1 "microSD may be required" games, which included part of the game (or a limited selection of a collection) and the rest was downloadable.
E.g. Resident Evil collection, cart has full RE4, 5 and 6 are with a code - Wolfenstein 2 is playable from the cart up to 2 chapters, the rest is downloaded.

Yeah, it's a 1:1 of the way that Xbox discs are right now. It's a code on a disc and nothing more, all it does is unlock the game for your account as long as you have it in the disc drive and you have to download it normally. It's digital with extra steps.

You can lend digital games already with the primary account trick, except you can lend your entire library at once. It's a downgrade in that regard the only perk is being able to sell it if you do that but the market is probably not going to be good because most people will buy digital instead. With digital you don't have to physically change the card out whenever you want to play a game. It's all the "tedium" of physically swapping your games but without the benefit of actually owning them if the servers ever go down. All it takes is a network outage and you can't download and play the game you bought, PS5 and XSX users have already ran into this.

They can be traded, that's the whole point (and sole positive) of the keycarts. Compare to the empty boxes with codes we got on switch 1 - these were one-time use and required you to login to a nintendo account.

yeah, it was bad when we saw the leaks but now it seems worthless and sure Nintendo really knows compression and I'm sure they will always have data in the cards but 3rd parties can't code, won't compress and they will all use the key cards, 3rd party support becoming a curse instead of a benefit.

Xbox and PS5 discs aren't one time use, I doubt those will be. You can resell them or trade them but I don't think the market will be there for them because of the lack of convenience in having to play tetris with both your game cards and your storage space.

many games on PS4 (particularly RPGs) don't need any patches, they're good as they are. You can also install a game, update it with patches and then back it up to USB (this works with disc games too, you can restore the backup on any console and insert the BD to play. If it's a digital game you need to login with an account that has the license for said game).
