I think the Switch is a good system that was just rendered obsolete 5 years ago. Nintendo has a really good thing going with the portable to home design of the Switch and I commend them for that. The problem is the Switch 2 just arrived too late. We've seen from the Vita that a price tag can kill a system even with Sony's name on the box.

So Dark Souls has an interesting, if stupid, history on Anon Babble. I wasn't around for Demon Souls' heyday. I started becoming a regular here just before Dark Souls advertising really started to kick off. Dark Souls released during a time when games held your hand until your knuckles turned blue. Think Uncharted, Call of Duty 4, etc.

So when Dark Souls released, Anon Babble loved it. For YEARS Dark Souls had permanent threads on page 1, I don't know if the Catalog was a thing yet. It was a borderline sin to even criticize Dark Souls back then. I didn't play Dark Souls until later, Dragons Dogma was my jam at the time. But there used to be fighting between the 2 camps about which was the better game. Every article from a games journalist about how Dark Souls was ableist, no really, that was released was posted and laughed at here.

So what changed? Well it started with Dark Souls 2 which was divisive to say the least. First it was how the lighting engine was nerfed from the teaser. Then it was world design criticism. Post your favorite Iron Keep meme here. Then the filthy casuals started to git gud. Regular people had caught on to Dark Souls's schtick and were beating the game on DDR pads. Suddenly Dark Souls wasn't good anymore. In fact, Dark Souls was never good. And I was the only person who knew from the beginning. Even if I was posting in threads for years before its popularity fell off. As someone who got into the series late, it was the most confusing thing to see the board so a complete 180 on not just the series but the first entry that everyone had loved before.

Fear and Hunger has the real "darksouls" effect in the sense that it tests how much of an actual gamer you are. It's a gamer intuition check.

People only "hate" Dark Souls because it got so popular and became the basis for everything. When it first came out, people couldn't stop jerking it off, and the hate only really started once Prepare to Die edition appeared and now PC fags could play the game, so suddenly with more people playing, it was no longer "cool" to like it. Though there was also a point where people who liked Demon Souls saw themselves as cool for liking that one since it was so popular. Then as each Souls game has come out, it's only muddied the waters further. Also, doesn't help the games have a hardcore community who says you should try to do level 1 runs or can't use specific items that make the game easier.

You should just enjoy the ride, especially if you plan to play multiple titles. You might not like every single one as much as you hoped for, but the games are generally solid. Play however you want, the freedom these games have are what help makes them feel special. I've played the rest of the games through a few times each and now I'm finally on Sekiro as my last one, and it's still been a fun ride.

The seethe Eternal generated was immensely satisfying as because it proved that those boomers were not actually good at games, rather that they have a very insular skillset and were/are too autistic and stupid to adapt that skillset to a more mechanically dense experience.

Lootboxes are the best way of unlocking extra content*. This way, everyone gets different items, which might be unique or interesting. Compare it to the battle pass system, where everyone who's level 19 has the exact same shit as every other level 19. Its boring, you lose the surprise of new gear, and usually you get less of it overall. Lootboxes were the perfect medium to get cosmetic unlocks, and were a great incentive to play more. I never put a penny in Overwatch, yet had 4-5 skins for each character just by playing a few arcade games every now and then

*as long as the things you get in the lootboxes are cosmetic only. Any game changing stuff should never be unlocked through something like this

Whether thats through putting cash in, or just unlocking it through playtime - the random drops are a better method than battle pass giving predetermined rewards

Here's one. Heavy, not Sniper, is the class that doesn't gel with TF2.

Sniper may be a long range class in a close range game. But your primary method of dealing with him is the same as most other classes, you get close. He's a long range class that encourages close range combat. Even better he rewards flanking and getting behind enemy lines. Not pretending Sniper doesn't have problems, but if we assume no bullshit good aim or outright aimbotting/wallhacks the class works.

But Heavy? He's a class that discourages close range combat, since getting close to heavy is a death sentence. The entire normal process of engagement in tf2 of "get close" basically goes out the window when a heavy is involved because you have to avoid not only getting near him but also anyone near him as well. Even the idea of getting close to backstab him is seriously compromised by the likelihood that the medic he's always with him is likely to warn him.

I can't and it's that very ambiguity that makes it so funny

i love devil may cry, and this isnt that hot a take, but dmc3 is one of the weaker entries. most of the enemies suck ass to fight, only the basic 7 hells are consistently fun to fight. and the level design and bosses are hit or miss. 4 & 5 are more fun, even though they have their own issues. 1 is kino and probably the best overall, even if it falls short with having crazy combat compared to 4 & 5. i replay 4 the most.
what i will give 3, is that it has the best cutscenes. they were awesome.

DMC3 was the first one to really get good combat, and it was such a strong comeback after DMC2, probably why people remember it more fondly. Most games are actually too long. Going by achievement completion rates it shows that most are unable to maintain interest for over 10 hours. Games should aim for 4-8 hours for a playthrough and instead include multiple paths/choices and newgame+ options to provide reasons to reply instead. Way of the Samurai type stuff only not just for open world games.

Its combat is clean and every attack feels real nice to use, but its too simple to really stand out, there's just not enough variety or combos to pull it ahead of the other games. 1's strength has always been the atmosphere and the level design/themes. The creepy castle has never been topped, location wise. Especially on second visit after the garden

Honestly it depends on what map and gamemode.
If it's a close quarters map with an objective like payload or attack/defense then they're very annoying. As soon as its a large open map on any gamemode then Heavies are sitting ducks for literally any class except Pyros and Scouts who are forced to go close to them. Don't forget that TFC's maps' "close quarters" are relatively spacious, so the Heavy might've been balanced back then compared to now.
Another point you haven't mentioned (and rightfully so) are the players. Thankfully most Heavy players have awful tunnel vision so it's really easy to flank them even in smaller maps. But as soon as there's a pro Heavy on a team... yeesh... your point is 100% accurate.

Lilypad and pachinko were shite, but they were little extra bonus areas, not main levels, so its easier to overlook them. The feel of the game as a whole does a lot to bump up its score though. Every level is so memorable, despite all having the same basic beach theme

The levels are designed around Fludd and you can pull some really fun tricks with it and the new spin-jump and wall sliding moves, the bonus levels also takes flood away so you have to do some precision platforming. The level design in 64 sucks in comparison, you're never required to platform well in order to beat the game.
Sunshine also has a coherent story/theme and excellent music, fun bosses and lots of memorable levels. Aside from a few half-baked bonus stages I think it's the best Mario game ever made.

Projectiles aren't instant, they have travel time and can hit different parts of the body based on how the target moves in relation to the shooter. You could also tell the targeting system which part to prioritize or even manually nudge the reticle a bit.

As time passes I've found that less is more works more often than not and DMC1 is a great example of having the exact amount of tools you need for the job. i am not like that, though. i get why people are into call of duty, halo, etc. im not a fucking idiot and quakefags can be fucking annoying as shit. i just really appreciate these games for their egalitarian, focus on simple mechanics like aiming, movement, map knowledge/control philosophy. the frustrating thing is, is that i think a lot of people really do value this, especially among gen z, as you see a huge obsession with hitboxes, balancing, meta, etc. its just that AFPS fans and players can be annoying as fuck and play these games Gregor style making it virtually impossible to get into as a new player. AFPS is just difficult to consistently play for long periods of time as playing them requires huge amounts of focus coupled with really fast paced gameplay which can be really mentally draining, making it so you only play for few matches before being naturally burned out. i remember the Titanfall guys talked about that too which is why their company gravitated towards apex legends which is way slower pace with lots of downtime with only a few minutes of high octane action per game.

KBM sucks for most games unless the mouse has at least 2 extra buttons and keyboards should have an analog stick that is actually an analog stick and not just remapped WASD. For games where WASD is needed to move, needing 3 fingers sucks instead of 1 sucks and needing a hold or toggle a walk or slower movement with a 4th finger sucks even more when you need it.

But I think MMORPGs as a genre are just dead and not viable anymore. All the successful ones are only so due to Inertia and will die along with their player base.
Multiplayer games in general may be doomed if you aren't from a well known IP. There are too many games and not enough players to go around. Only chance is to provide something brand new and hope to retain attention if/when you ever have a 15 minutes of fame.

I think the unspoken word he wants to use is 'manufactured poorly.' Because while you are literally correct in that all encounters in a game are by design, the sense of 'forced difficulty' stems from a very heavy handed or low iq method of making things 'more difficult'. A common example would be difficulty levels just raising the raw stats, most infamously hp levels, on enemies, so you are fundamentally having the exact same experience as you go through an encounter, but it takes longer due to enemies having more hp that you need to cut through, which creates a sense of boredom due to the repetitiveness of the combat encounter.

Tldr 'forced difficulty' just refers to means of technically increasing the difficulty of a game but doing so in a really gay and lame way.

3. Crash and Spiro are good, but not alltime great games. No 3d games like that are truly timeless greats yet. Odyssey came close. Okami comes close. Wind Waker HD got so much right. Red Dead 2 has value. Hifi Rush RYTHM gameplay and humor, as well as artstyle. All so close. Penny’s Big Breakaway may hold the secret to making the greatest 3d Mario ever….

Metroid Prime is technically impressive but not fun at all. Backtracking is supposed to be made easy and fun by your powerups, like in Super. They missed the memo there with constantly trudging through Magmoor caverns. It's not until Prime 3 that they figured out a structure that worked in first-person 3D, and that's the game the fans think is the worst one. Retro's talent was way above and beyond but their understanding of linear level design was far better than non-linear.
