Metaphor is an actual JRPG. It's made by Japanese people, it has a Japanese style, it's combat system is typical of a JRPG, it is simply purely JRPG.

This game is really good, the French actually made a genuine passionate jrpg, id compare it to FF10. It feels like japs made this and yet it wasn't made by them, haven't ever felt that before. We need more western devs to make shit like this and take more cues from Japan like Expedition 33s dev team did, the OST is pretty phenomenal too, never heard of the composer but I will be looking forward to their music in the future for games just like I love Keiichi Okabe. I would give the game a 8-9/10, it's probably as good as it'll ever get for a western made jrpg.
The other thing that confuses me is ex Ubisoft deva made this, I don't play ubislop but I'm kinda confused how they were able to really nail a turn based hybrid without having I assume any experience on the genre? I can't think of turn based games by Ubisoft. My only guess is the devs are jrpg nerds and know what makes the genre work.

Last note, the combat is really fun. I'm used to traditional jrpgs for most of the genre but this while not entirely unique is executed incredibly well. I like the cast too, I kinda expected western HR writing but instead have gotten a heartfelt tale on family and loss with a cast that is pretty funny and likable.
Whoever designed the art and monsters needs a raise, also 30 developers and some random music teacher off the street made this? That's it?

I hate how little stats matter in this game. You are basically incentivized to do the exact same stat spread in the early game because pictos make them completely irrelevant in the late game. Also I think it was a design mistake to make it so parry/dodge is just 100% invincible because it means they needed to make animations jank as fuck without an easy indicator so that the game isn't just a massive push over.
It's a pretty solid 7.5/10 otherwise. Probably a 8 or higher for JRPG fans.

This game on expert is straight up an OSU game and is not enjoyable at all if you're not fan of hitting your head on the wall till you develop muscle memory to dodge every attack of every single boss.

Prescriptive gameplay in a JRPG is fundamentally poor design. It doesn't matter if it's stagger slop like FF7R, timed hits/blocking/parrying like E33, break shit like Octopath Traveler, minigames like Tomato Adventure, etc. It is not REAL gameplay and it provides a cheap way to avoid having to actually engage with the strategy parts that RPGs are meant to be built around.
There are plenty of actual good JRPGs out there that you will denounce as slop the moment I say them because they don't fit your personal narrative or what have you, but these kinds of fake gameplay games serve no purpose other than to force the genre down a path it is not meant to take in the first place.

But plenty of actual quality games that don't fall for this crap exist and are plenty fun to play on their gameplay merits alone.

It really depends, as usually with PCs. There are people with high-end rigs that have problems. On the other hand, I have a 7 year old RTX2070 and a CPU below the minimum requirements and the game runs smoothly in 1080p, 60fps and high settings, though with DLSS of course.
So depending on your rig and luck, you may have dodged the bullet.

PS5's triggers of all controllers would probably feel nice to parry. L1/R1 (or LB/RB) in most gamepads nowadays feel like taken straight from controllers for cheap remote toys for kids. I have no idea why they're doing this when it absolutely can be and often was in the past done better.

I think part of the problem with rhe PS5 bumpers is that they both squishy and sloped so your fingers want to slide off of them. It's hard to get a comfortable grip on them that allows you to have acceptable reaction time. PS3, PS4, and all Xbox since the 360 have been better.

Clair Obscur means "clear/bright darkness." It's also a style of painting where there are stark contrasts between dark shadow and then the subject of painting being extremely well lit.
