Gonna play devils advocate for funsies, having type 1/type 2 instead of male/female gives you more freedom in character creation and roleplaying. Think about a character like Gwyndolin, he's male but he has a feminine body. If you wanted to recreate him or someone like him in a character creator you'd have to select the female option and accept female voice lines just to get him to look like Gwyndolin even though he's not a girl and doesn't have the voice of one. For purposes like that having body type distinct from sex/gender makes the most sense.

If I was making an RPG I would have Male, Female, and Custom. Male and Female are exactly how they used to work in old games, strictly binary. But Custom is the most elaborate gender customization ever put into a video game. If you can think of it, it's there. You can change your pronouns, mix and match all cosmetic options, change your animations, design your own gender symbol, etc. But the catch is that unless you click on "Custom" you never see any of it.
