Why did they fail?
Why did they fail?
they fucking sucked, dude.
no games
sega couldn't into management
youtu.be
sega japan shitting out random upgrades
no DVD drive. once the PS2 was released it was the nail in the coffin for Sega hardware
SoA botched Saturn outside Japan fueling the money bleeding, Saturn alone was already a risky move with little potential for payoff already. Simply; Sega ran out of cash to support DC due poor bussiness vision for long term
Every there was Nintendomination was because the competition were retards blinded for short-term profits and dying in the long-term

Dreamcast was pretty cool, but its library was full of arcade games and piracy would have kicked its ass even if it succeeded long-term as CD burners became more affordable and commonplace. By the mid to late 90's, people preferred having lengthier single-player titles which the DC didn't have other than Shenmue.
PS2 hype was more than enough to kill the console since it had multimedia playback (other than CDs) and several hot titles.
Saturn was priced terribly. SEGA bet hard on another generation of 2D games so it had no time left for additional R&D when it turned out people wanted to play games like Crash Bandicoot and Tomb Raider instead of Clockwork Knight. So they slapped additional processing units to it and doubled the price hoping it would work. The thing costed 400 dollars in 1995 money. Think about that.
Also, no fucking sonic? He's your mascot??
Not to mention SEGA ruined their reputation by shitting out addons. Addons do not increase market share, they only continue to mine a portion of the existing market share for additional profit.

This is the first time vidya took a turn for the worse, before Xbox bringing paid online and dlc there was PS making people thinking they play games for the story as if it has a place in videogames
Retarded surprise launch
You say that now but in this nogames dark age of gaming someone having a surprise launch of motherfucking game systems and games would be dope as fuck
SOA fucked over the Saturn. Dreamcast didn't have DVD player.
and games
Would have been dope if they had had these too.
SoJ fucked over the Dreamcast with its hardware design as well, along with the NAOMI by adding hardware developers were less familiar with which hurt its third party development.
The problem is that if you fuck around with the publishers and stores, you find out.
Specially if you fuck with EA
Saturn
unattractive pricing
the stealth launch in the west, pissing off retailers
Sega of Japan and America not cooperating
terrible software lineup outside of Japan, and poor promotion of the good stuff IN Japan (the Saturn only had one million-seller in Japan; the N64 wiped the floor with it in software sales despite getting edged out in hardware)
no flagship Sonic game, with the attempts to make one being a disaster thanks to incompetence, ridiculous corporate meddling, and prioritizing Yuji Naka's gay little arcade clown game
Playstation getting priority treatment from third-party devs, thanks to a mix of genuine preference for its hardware/reach and moneyhatting
Dreamcast
opting to not have a DVD player
losing EA Sports right when they were really taking off big-time
while the software situation in the west was better than the Saturn's, SEGA initially leaned into arcade ports too hard in an era where arcade gaming was starting to lose its allure
in the scope of the turn-of-the-millennium industry, the Dreamcast had no chance in hell of outpacing the steep financial setbacks from the Saturn and 32X
burned all the bridges with retailers
implying DC didn't have games
Sadly for you DC had some great of these
SA 1 and 2
Shenmue
JSR
Chu chu rocket
Ikaruga
CvsSNK2
MvsC2
Soul Calibur games
House of the dead
kill the middlemen
Sell it directly
Sounds like people could get it with minimal raises in the pricing
But do you think it was feasible, back then, to sell big numbers without going through brick and mortar retailers?
Ahead of their time, no big title hits
That was Tom's fault. He was obsessed with the genesis. Though you can blame the CD on Japan.
The Saturn could have done better if Sega didn’t spend so much on putting out add-ons for the Genesis. The 32X is the most pointless thing imaginable. At least the Sega CD had some decent games and the kind of music and voice acting it could produce were impressive for the time. Sega could have just not made the 32X and had more resources to support the Saturn
The 32X happened because Hayao Nakayama was scared of the goddamn Atari Jaguar.
Sort of yes. Nakayama had the final say. But it was Tom's team who first pitched the idea though. Also Tom was still trying to sell a massive amount of Genesis products such as half a million 3 button genesis controllers.... in 1996.
The Dreamcast console was ahead of its time, but didn't matter because the PS2 hype was unreal and it had a dvd player which was the biggest thing at the time, on top of being backwards compatible with the already massively successful PS1. It's honestly shocking the the Xbox and Gamecube even managed to somehow compete with it.
Did Tom also have anything to do with that disgusting US Model 1 design for the Saturn controller? Why the fuck didn't they just use Japan's design from the start? It's probably the best all-purpose 2D gaming controller!
I prefer to play Oblivion than Skyrim. However, Skyrim did have better weapons/skills.
the PS2 hype was unreal and it had a dvd player which was the biggest thing at the time, on top of being backwards compatible with the already massively successful PS1
this sums it up
I'm not talking in past time.
Did Tom also have anything to do with that disgusting US Model 1 design for the Saturn controller?
I honestly never thought of that till now, but honestly probably.
Why the fuck didn't they just use Japan's design from the start?
No idea. Wasted resources imo. I agree. It's so good.
Also if you want to see just how bad the genesis bloat was in 96. Skip to 54:50 in the video I posted earlier. It's so bad.
At least the Sega CD had some decent games and the kind of music and voice acting it could produce were impressive for the time.
I actually find it off-putting. To have CD music on top of 16-bit 2D graphics is a sort of mismatch, they just don't gel together. Besides, the Genesis was plenty capable of producing good music on its own. No need for a stupid add-on that cost over twice as much as the base system!
dreamcast
piracy
saturn
expensive as fuck and no games competing against ps1
The Saturn was a nightmare to work with and was horrendous mismanaged in the western market. The Dreamcast was released when Sega was running on fumes and had no money to truly support it
Sega kept releasing consoles too quickly. By the time they announced a new console they barely broke even on the last console leading to a business model where they were perpetually in the red. Its a real shame because all the consoles were very good consoles with a great selection of games. They just needed better management.
The Saturn was basically stealth released in NA so it had no support then the Playstation murdered it. The Dreamcast was almost immediately seen as outdated because of the looming PS2/Xbox/Gamecube. I also remember a lot of people thinking the advertising for the Dreamcast was weird and off putting.
Sega:

Sony:

This shit happened on May 3rd 1995...That's almost 1565 weeks ago...
Incompetent management. Also internal rivalry between Sega USA and Sega Japan
People have extremely poor taste in video games.
They are 2 of my favourite systems.
no DVD drive
Exactly what i just said - people want movies, not video games.
Makes sense. When Genesis was selling best, the best selling games were EA sports goyslop.
SEGA was and always will be their own worst enemy. Almost all the failures of the Saturn and Dreamcast are exclusively on them rather than outside factors.
Except the PS2 performing the equivalent of the Chaos Dunk of slam dunks in terms of sales, that one wasn't their fault.
299
Because the saturn's library was fucking shit at the time. Nobody gave a fuck if it had a bunch of 2d arcade ports, people wanted shit like mario 64 and final fantasy 7, people wanted an actual 3d sonic game instead of superman 64 clown game, the library is only good from the perspective of somebody going back to it 30 years later.
Dreamcast started console multiplayer subscriptions that plagues consoles, today, so SEGA deserved to fold.
no it's all the gaijins fault! the japs never make a mistake or do something arrogant!
(You)
Sega at E3 1995: "The Saturn will be priced anywhere between $399 and $449"
Audience: *dead silent*
Sony at E3 1995: "299"
Audience: *standing ovation*
1995 consumers were easy to please.
Surprise launch relates to the Saturn, not Dreamcast
no mainline sonic game
how the fuck did they let this happen? soa did nothing while sti was spinning their wheels with sonic xtreme, soj only showed up to put more pressure on sti, all while sonic team was fucking around with the development of two non-sonic games
Because Sega of Japan and Sega of America couldn't work together
The lead programmers kept fighting and management (Mike Wallace) didn't properly shut it down. Also Management made retard decisions.
There was some like red sword blue sword platformer game that involved saving a princess in a boss battle then running down a mountain with a boulder chasing you
What game was it lads?
Both were arcade game machines in an era where console gamers sadly didn't care about shmups/ fighting games/ lightgun shooters/ etc.
Because there wasn't a seaman sequel
do you think they can get spock back for the sequel?
that's on sti. soj knew very well that the game was going nowhere but still didn't have a plan b. nights is cute, but not what sonic team should've be making at the time
Dreamcast was on the people; the system was peak even to this day. The real Sega blunder was the Saturn burning their bank despite faring quite well at Japan
Yep. STI was really incompetent. But soj shouldn't have meddled with it when they did. Then again soa shouldn't have let STI get that bad. It all boils down to STI's management. They were shit.
Release the Dreamcast to compete with the N64 and PS1, finally, after the disaster that was the Saturn, in May1998
Middling 3rd party support, mostly arcade ports, but hey Sonic! And Shenmue, the inventor of QTEs!
In May 1999 Sony promises a PS2 with a DVD player, the new hotness that as out of financial reach for many
Sega drops Dreamcast in the west in September 1999, no one cares since everyone is waiting for the PS2
It launches in 2000 in both regions and Sega is kill
Imagine not having a single Final Fantasy on any of your systems lol
Not to mention Metal Gear Solid, another system seller up there with FF.
DreamCast deserved it using a known pedophile symbol
using a known pedophile symbol
rent free.
The Saturn definitely has it's difficulties, but Sega of America went into the 5th gen anchored by multiple different lines of hardware that would end up costing them hundreds of millions of dollars, as well as many more millions spent on employing huge amounts of developers who never worked on any released games.
Computer Chronicles TV show - 1999:
Dreamcast:
youtu.be
PS2:
youtu.be
all from the same episode
You raise a good point, Sega should have made a Phantasy Star sequel for the Saturn, it still wouldn't be enough to sway things to their favor, but it was their most recognizable RPG and it would have sold quite well
wouldn't matter; sega rpgs had niche appeal (as games really are) while stuff like Final fantasy had mass appeal (and was riding that wave in that era). It was a futile idea even if they had it, it was decided long before both consoles even being thought
Why did they fail?
nintendo had better mascots
Sup d00ds idk man I remember my friend is having Dreamcast was good but Saturn CD I think world not ready for CD then
But i don't remember is Dreamcast CD??
GD-ROM, but basically 1gig CD.
turned out people wanted to play games like Crash Bandicoot and Tomb Raider instead of Clockwork Knight.
Your not wrong...but I love Clockwork Knight regardless...
my parents still have a PS2 in their living room for DVDs
The Saturn would have been a success if Sega bundled Mr. Bones with it
Sega is a legitimately stupid company that succeeded in spite of itself as it would repeatedly, intentionally self-sabotage because some Jap or American would get pissed about what the other branch was doing and try and fuck said branch over.
>the stealth launch in the west, pissing off retailers
Them AND customers. Born 94 and my pops was a Sega man, but then Saturn came out and he didn't get much from it (we had like NiGHTS and Panzer Dragon from what I remember), so he tried his hand at a Playstation, and he was hooked.
prioritizing Yuji Naka's gay little arcade clown game
Not exactly, NiGHTS came out with no issues, the problem was the X-treme team took the engine with Sega's permission, Naka found out and threw a hissy fit and threatened to walk, and Sega told the X-treme team to scrap what they had with that engine and start over. God Sonic's jump to 3D shouldn't have so much as a hassle as it was.
$299 for a gaming system
God, I miss those prices.
??
That's literally what an Xbox costs
God, I miss those prices.
Huh, nice, good for Xbox fans
$699
Oi...
Except the PS and Saturn were game systems and worth their price
Speaking as someone from the UK, advertising for the Saturn was basically non-existent. This allowed Sony to run pretty much unopposed. The momentum then carried on into the next gen and crippled the Dreamcast as everyone was just waiting for the PS2.
It's like 30 years later and last I checked the Xbox plays games which makes it a game system
In Dreamcast eta dollars the Xbox is like a hundred bucks
I was born in 1992 and I legitimately didn't know the Saturn or Dreamcast was even a thing until like 2008 despite tonnes of people I grew up with owning Mega Drives
PlayStation was king, N64 was around but less popular (it had Pokemon games and Goldeneye/Perfect Dark) and Saturn/Dreamcast might as well not have existed
No need to come out as gay buddy
Why did they fail?
the cult of sony is very powerful.
I checked the Xbox plays games which makes it a game system
"game" system focused on anything but them where games are the last priority. So no
The Dreamcast didn't fail. Sega just had no money
I heard the people at Sega had heroin and cocaine addictions
Back and forth nonsense between the American and Japanese divisions, they could never come to an agreement with each other. Also, the 32X add-on
Tried to find a Neo Geo ad with the price but guess no one wanted to advertise a $1000+ console with $200-$300 games
ctrl+f
no bernie stolar
The funny thing was the neo geo stuck around for like a decade so it was like 3 console life cycles for that price
This magazine ad is from a mail order company called 'Chips & Bits', who use to advertise in various gaming magazines back in the day. They would sell Neo-Geo AES and game carts. This ad is from October- November 1994. Neo -Geo AES machines were close to $600.00, and game carts could sell up to $250.00 (USD)
fpbp, sega has basically never been good and was always in dead last.
They were always way the fuck behind.
saturn had a snes era controller even if I loved the controller
dreamcast had 1 analog stick
keep in mind sony had added 2 analog sticks to the ps1 and it was seen as one of the best innovations.
Here is an ad from the same company, but taken from a gaming magazine from late 1995. After the PS1 and Sega Saturn were released, but a year before the N64 launch. It was still called Ultra 64 here. This listing shows the Neo-Ge0 CD that was released in late 1994, and the Neo-Geo CD games averaged about $70.00. But the AES carts were still $229.00 (UDS) in 1995 dollars. That was expensive per game cart.
Sega Genesis was there one hit wonder.
Interesting watch, thanks anon.
Interesting watch, thanks anon.
The host was getting up there in age, but he knew his tech well, and was hosting that show since the 1980's The computer chronicles is not a VG show. But every once in a while he would look at game consoles. I like that he pulls out a Neo Geo Pocket at the end and comments on that.
As a Saturn owner, Saturn had no games. DC piracy was out of control basically day one and Playstation as a brand had already eclipsed Sega. Also shit like Shenmue costing $50mil to make.
R u hotdog anon?
Undermined by Sony
Even though the Dreamcast was released prior, Sony lied and stirred up a load of media hype a about the PS2 would be 4x 10x more powerful than the Dreamcast
People held off buying the Dreamcast and when it turned out the PS2 wasn't that much more powerful everyone still bought one anyway due to the hype train
This is the first time vidya took a turn for the worse
Not wanting games to remain arcadeshit is not "a turn for the worse"
Adjusting for inflation: $299 in '95 is like $627 today.
And just for fun, see how much PCs used to cost.
No Nintendo Bonus.
Arcadey games can be a ton of fun, thoughbeit.
ps2 had more games, was backwards compatible with ps1, and a dvd player. there was no stopping it from winning the era
they don't failed, they just weren't as succesful as megadrive.
Fail are like 32x, jaguar or 3do
The first game shown is Trickstyle. Trickstyle is a game that was made by Criterion, and uses a weird proto renderware engine. Did show off some great models and effects on the Dreamcast. But the game had some framerate issues. But it was a pretty good hoverboard game. Windows version has a better framerate. But even on Dreamcast emulation, you can run it at 60fps. Not a bad tech demo for the Dreamcast.
Sure, but thinking people wanting games to be more than arcadeshit in terms of length and content, and people caring about stories in video games is as bad as paid online is downright retarded
You still get gameplay focused games if you're allergic to stories
which hurt its third party development
Get 400 games in two years
Dreamcast development was easy, it died because SoA's glorious work on the Saturn kept people away from buying a Dreamcast and Squaresoft did a video about Squall dancing with Rinoa for the PS2.
Absolutelly no game looked like that in the whole generation, but it killed the Dreamcast.
Mind, those were shitty prebuilts that would become obsolete next year and even then they could barely play any of the current games.
Kek that presario was my first pc ever idk if that was the price but loved the monitor speakers iconic
We had it good. All I needed in life was refugee status. My parents worked like dogs we had a ton of money.
NFL2K2 was one of the last games released for the Dreamcast, and one of the last sports games. Visual Concepts were also getting better with the Dreamcast hardware.
