What happened was a good game made by a small dev team made further proved that triple A dev studios just don't get what makes gaming good. Schizos lashed out because any game that gamers consider good has to be proven to be bad so they can shit post about it, they failed badly at this despite the spam. This in turn ramped up the positivity with the mindset of "wait, if shit posters can't shitpost about the game does that mean it's actually good?" so people did what you'd expect and bought the game, played it and enjoyed what it had to offer
Now you've got those very same people trying to drown out the schizos at every chance they can get because for some of them this is the first time they've played a game, recommended by Anon Babble, that they enjoy along with a mass of other people
It also has attractive characters, doesn't send a woke message and defies leading gaming industry developers ideals on what gaming should be for the future such as many shitting on turn based combat yet expedition 33 outselling their own games they deemed "catered to a younger audience" without turn based mechanics so there's options for people to make fun of others mixed in with all of this too

That may be true, buit to play devil's advocate: E33 does end up doing things that are innovative while JRPG titles have been stagnating for two decades. Formulaic in both gameplay and narrative, and for a large part in art direction as well when they started almost uniformly adopting the samey post -2010 anime artstyles.
Japanese devs, albeit under command of their corporate overlords perhaps, have been playing shit way, way too safe for a long time, while also in the case of the largest IPs being hampered by development hells and/or resources being taken up by attempts to milk a single title with multimedia/spinoffs/rereleases (especially FF and Persona).
