Resident Evil 4

This game is a masterpiece of game design. I can't think of many other third-person shooters, or action games in general, that are as well designed. I find it funny that, despite being so influential, no other game has managed to surpass it. Every game "inspired" by RE4 seems to misunderstand the intricacies that make it such an amazing game. They copy only the most superficial aspects and ignore everything else. Even the RE4 remake doesn’t come close to the original, although it’s a decent game on its own.

The fact that RE4 has remained unsurpassed for 20 years is proof that game design has overall been getting worse, not better.

Re4 is in the top 5 games of all time for anyone with a brain

Very good opinion

It's the fact that you need to plant your feet to shoot and reload, it makes the game unique and high commitment, feels more like an action game or fighting game where going on the offensive also leaves you vulnerable to being punished, rather than a more typical shooter.

yeah. game was ported to so many consoles

Yeah it's a pretty good game. Lots of good design in there to where the game is still fun to play today for most people, whereas other games from that time period younger people consider to now be unplayable by modern standards.

Having said that, it's not one of my favorite games of all time unlike this faglord who needs game journalists and reddit commetns to tell him what to think I was there when it came about and saw all the positive reviews so had to give it a try, and yeah it was great. I thought it was a solid 8/10, so it was bizarre over the past few decades watching the internet narrative runaway and pretend it's an 11/10 masterpiece.

It's not even the best game in its own franchise.

You just have bad taste, and it's sorta ironic that you accuse me of following what reviewers say when since the day it launched I thought it was fucking amazing. I replayed it more than 15 times over the years and I still do regularly. so shut the fuck up and sit down with your trash opinions. If you think re4 is an 8/10 please do give examples of games that are 8.5 so we can all laugh at your garbage taste

no cokeheads no cokeheads no cokeheadsno cokeheads no cokeheads no cokeheads no cokeheads no cokeheads no cokeheads

I used to replay it every year up until Dark Souls came out, which took over that role for a while. I should play it again.
Have you played the Wii version? The motion controls with the wiimote were fantastic, too good even - made the game too easy. Well worth playing though since they were a lot of fun.

You tried typing a lot of words, but all you really said was "you need to agree with all the top voted reddit comments or whatever I'm mad that you didn't"

To which I say pic related

contrarian faggot

This desu. It's a good game but it's also one of the most overrated games of all time (probably THE most overrated, considering you're not even allowed to admit it's less than a 10/10). It's the game I always see people say is their favorite game of all time when you can tell they don't really play games, like youtubers and wannabe game devs. Like half the people who overrate this game are probably just saying it because they're trying to fit in but never played it.

what are ur top 5 games OAT? Imo (in no particular order) Fallout 2, RE4, Dishonored, Dark Souls.

"Muh contrarian" is an appeal to popularity which is a logical fallacy, so you have no argument and you're a faggot. I win

you are the one obsessed with popularity, your entire opinion was created to feel special and different

I wouldn't be surprised if half the people who say it's their favorite game stopped playing when they got to the castle.

I already won because you have no argument other than "muh contrarian" so I'm not going to read your faggot replies anymore, just give it up

whereas other games from that time period younger people consider to now be unplayable by modern standards.

I don't think that's true, most games from the ps2/gc era are perfectly playable today, in fact like OP said game design really hasn't made much progress since that time and in many ways even regressed

It's not even the best game in its own franchise.

RE2chads rise up

you won jack shit, you said it's an overrated 8/10 game. the reason you say this is because it's popular. if this exact same fucking game was an hidden gem nobody talked about you'd be saying it's a 10.
you just want to feel special like a faggot.
again, tell us 5 games that are 8.5/10 so I can laugh at you

Eh I mean games like Splinter Cell that people say feel to clunky to play now which I just straight up disagree with and still feel fine to play when I pick them up now even though the last time I played them was 10 years ago or something.

as much as I love RE4, playing the series beyond it really makes you dislike the constant inventory screening. Even the original trilogy+REmake were better about this because your inventory was capped at 6-8 slots.

What do you mean? It's like way easier than all the others in terms of inventory management

Killer7
pathologic 2
eternal darkness sanitys requiem
snake eater
majora's mask

It's not even the best game in its own franchise.

It's 3 by the way

snake eater

Not Subsistence? Don't like the 3d camera or something else?

Play RE5, RE6

They're fun

It's nice to have friends. I now just assume people who don't like these games are friendless or really have trouble talking to people, which explains why RE4 fans are the biggest and smelliest Anon Babbleirgins on this board.

RE4 comes out

The game is sub-par action slop compared to Max Payne 1 and 2

RE5 improves on the formula (being able to switch weapons on the fly)

RE4fags shit a brick for some reason

re6.jpg - 1626x451, 174.15K

pathologic 2 isn't even the best pathologic game

Yeah I'll never understand whay 4fags hate at least 5 so much. It's just more of what made RE4 good but improved on, plus you get to play co-op. Maybe they just don't like the AI partner or something. 6 was over the top with its dumb action stuff I will agree but I mean so was 4 and arguably every game in the series, but just a little less so.

garbage levels

unfun story, unlike 4 that is fun

piss filter

trash setting

exploration is trash or non existent

perma sidekick

yea I wonder what happened

The big problem with 6 is that the villain should've been introduced in 4 or 5 as a good guy for it to have any effect, but Resi has this problem in spades, like those two characters Raymond and Jessica at the end of Revelations 1 that never get dealt with/resolved.

put 50 whole hours into re6

expects anyone to take his opinion seriously

yeah, no

Yeah the story has never been the strong point in this series for me. It's all about the level design I think

?

I played through the campaign (both characters) and mercenaries (both modes)

the level design in 5 is garbage compared to 4. it's not even on the same league. but it's pointless to argue with you if you legit think 5 is better than 4

Yeah people shouldn't actually play games, they should just parrot each other and not form their own opinions

I didn't even play 5 you faggot I just said I don't like the story in these games

You're talking to a 4fag. There's no point in trying to reason with them because everything you say or do is intended to be an insult to 4 in their deluded imaginations

there was a demo of re6, if you actually paid money for the game let alone completed it your a fucking retard and are a large contributing factor as to why the industry is in the gutter

Every game Shinji Mikami makes is amazing, even the "shitty" ones like P.N.03 are brilliant games because he has a great understanding of arcade games and what makes a videogame fun.

I honestly can't think of a better game that's so fun to replay. Resident evil 4 is a 10/10 and faggots who say it's tank controls are outdated are retarded it plays fine.

Nah Re6 was just the next logical step since you retards kept rewarding them for dumbing down the series with 4 and 5.

I actually quit RE6 my first time because I didn't like how over the top the intro was (it's seriously too much), but in totality, RE4 ruined the franchise anyway so I eventually came around and was able to appreciate 6.

Will Re9 be another return to survival horror or have we come full circle to another generation of action slop with the 4 Remake?

re4 ruined the franchise therefore you should enjoy slop

what is this argument? the game isn't fun, that's why its shat on.

if you disagree with me you got your opinion from youtube!

yawn

I never heard anyone complain about 4's tank controls, but I have heard idiots say it doesn't have tank controls. It totally does though, they're just confused because it no longer has fixed cameras.

the game isn't fun

I had a lot of fun with it and I can tell most RE4 fans like you are Anon Babbleirgins that never even tried to play it coop.

I think it will be this, given the success of the remakes:
Imagine the village area of RE4 but huge. Some places will be big "legacy dungeons" in said village. camera will be over the shoulder and combat will be 4 style. Merchant of some kind will also be present, and so will side quests but expanded upon, like you had with the food in RE8.

It's the Emperor's Clothes of vidya

bro it's still tank controls, just forget being able to aim in any direction

Imagine the village area of RE4 but huge. Some places will be big "legacy dungeons" in said village

Man I hope this is true. But I can't imagine 4 babies enjoying the classic level design.

never played it. should i?

yeah even pong is fun if you're playing it with a friend, that's not an argument for why a game in a single player franchise is good. i didn't even purchase the game after seeing how shit the demo was so of course I didn't play it co op

Tank controls refers to the movement of the character, not the gun's aiming.

you're right, that will probably be pathologic 3

But being able to aim however you want totally changes the gameplay, and I know you're gonna still cope, but you're just wrong. Tank controls, fixed camera, not going over the shoulder, all matter. RE4 just has tank controls because it's badly designed.

I enjoyed the VR.

Yeah I don't see why not at this point if it's been so many years and you still haven't played it. It gives you a new perspective on all the areas you're already familiar with. I liked it a lot, but it arguably makes the game a little too easy in areas where the game was clearly designed for the fixed camera.

The main draw of Subsistence back in the day was its combination of the new camera, the fact that it included MG1 and 2 ports from the MSX, and the new online mode which I think you can still play on private servers.

6 was in no way the ‘next logical step’ capcom blew their entire design on action setpiece overkill and removed what made 4/5’s pacing fun by cutting up the story into separate campaigns and removing the upgrade system.

No, I mean you're right about the aiming, it changed dramatically. But that's not what tank controls is. Tank controls refers to how you move the character. Meaning up on the stick always moves the character forward, back always moves the character back, and so on. RE4's leon moves about the same as the characters in the fixed-camera games. You just don't notice it because of the changed perspective.

Try it sometime: move 4's camera (while not aiming your weapon) and UP on the left stick (or W or whatever if you're on PC). The character still moves forward even if your camera is facing to the left or to the right. It controls exactly the same is it did in previous games, you just don't notice because of the over the shoulder perspective. RE4 Remake by comparison does not have tank controls as what direction you move in is impacted by your camera's position.

Re5 and God hand are VASTLY superior games
Re4 walked so 5 and God hand could run
youtube.com/watch?v=hT7WVmtfTRo

I'm not even sure what you're trying to say. Does RE4 have tank controls or not? It sounds like you're saying both:

and removing the upgrade system.

It just made your weapons consistent like old FPS/TPS games. Nobody playing Duke or Max Payne go "ehrrr wheres da upgrades???"

RE4 Remake by comparison does not have tank controls as what direction you move in is impacted by your camera's position.

Yeah and it's a better action game, particularly being able to finally switch weapons on the fly.

It was indeed a masterpiece for several reasons. Even the general balance of the weapons, especially for the pistols, which is something I never see mentioned.

I loved the little details, like Leon turning the head to indicate the player where the enemy is coming from, or the red barrels placed when boss is weaker to incediary grenades, or the constant knife close-ups when Krauser has screen time, in order to give the hint of his weakness.

Loved the map and the backtrack. Loved how the low FOV, the tank-like movement, and the stop to reload, has the purpose of making you feel in danger.

The enemies were clever too, like they would never make a queue to approach you, but they try to go a bit on the side when multiple of them is going frontally. But also they would try to approach from more roads. A female ganado even hints at that, saying that you are in trap, which is a sign that they are coming already from more roads, and it's better to reposition.

Easily in the top 3 game of all time.

Easily in the top 3 game of all time.*

*If you only ever played 3 games.

It's weird that mikami made that game, because it's so utterly fantastic.
It's like a complete accident in his otherwise mediocre gameography. Nothing else he directed is even half as good.

PS if anyone hasn't, play the original Gamecube version. It's MUCH better than the ports/remakes. They altered the gameplay for the worse.

Yeah it's pretty good.

top 3 of all time

Nah.

How is the PS2's gameplay altered? I thought it was mostly the same with some graphical concessions. I'm looking it up now and I guess some gun stats were changed

its amazing how the remake fucked it all up for the sake of "having a better story" when the story was even worse then the original.

Leon did you find BABY EAGLE, which is a code name for the PRESIDENTS DAUGHTER?

I like 2 Remake more than 4 Remake

I like 2 remake more than 4 OG

It's a result of being forced to make games he didn't want to for years and finally getting the chance to unload his creativity

Because you two are FUCKING CASUALS

DLC releases a month after the game and makes the game actually difficult

To even unlock the fourth Ghost Survivor requires you to beat some of the games only difficult content

Only 6% of players have this achievement

Demake 2 lovers confirmed for fucking casuals.

Yeah and it's a better action game, particularly being able to finally switch weapons on the fly.

Are you ignoring the inertia or lack of I frames or inconsistent hitboxes? Another brainded take from a surface level Anon Babbleermin

Is Evil Within 2 worth playing? I like the tactical/survival feel of Resident Evils and absolutely loath the "omg I'm losing my mind" theme of Silent Hill.

I've genuinely seen normies say they won't play the orginal game because it's outdated for the remastered instead.

I don't worship at the altar of RE4 like you do. Dead Space, RE5 and RE6 worked to improve on things that were wrong with 4 so I don't particularly care about what makes four "four".

It's good, but I prefer TEW1 more for hardcore and pacing

TEW2.jpg - 1920x1080, 277.69K

Haven't played 2 yet but it has to be better by virtue of not having dog shit DLC like the first game.

TRVE

I remember a lot of people (me included) liking RE6, but not liking it as a RE game.
RE5 on the other hand did in fact get full hate.
