Soul implies passion in the creation of something. Games with soul have a recognizable identity, something personal that was created for more than just making money, something that mass produced slop designed to appeal the widest possible audience doesn´t have.

Soulless games attempts at controversy intend to imitate soul but one must not be deceived. Games with soul are games the devs make for themselves and wish to share. They some times may anger some people but for soulfull games that´s incidental not an end on itself.

Soulless games purposely appeal to controversy to avoid accountability while soulful games take pride on their decisions and stand by them to the very end.

Remake Kainé is nearly 100% identical to her original official character art from back in 2010, which her PS3 2010 model could never achieve and it was in fact the one that least resembled her official art, looking completely different from it.

this experience with DOD1 is literally what made Yoko Taro steer his idea of making games towards making the best our of the limited resources you have even in an era where resources are plentiful, from using the idea of multiple routes originally used as padding and turning it into a main focus of the narrative and core aspect of the whole series, to embracing gameplay limitation(be it from low budget or developer inexperience) and build levels around them, to recognizing those same limitations and make fun of them in multiple games like in replicant where many side quests directly mock jrpg side quests tropes and annoyances or in DOD3 where the protagonist is self aware of the routes and almost even self aware of being in a video game commenting on the platforming sections and the disciples commenting on enemy placement as if her sisters were bosses at the end of a stage etc, to using the various quirks and unexpected turns of the different endings E as an extremely central point of how the various games connect to each other in the encompassing narrative, and so on.

DOD1 ending up as it did might have not been intentional, but the extremely clunky and atrocious result is what gave birth soul to the rest of the series, if it had been the fun game they had originally in mind, the rest of the series(if it ever saw the light) would have been completely different than how it is now.

And even putting aside all of this, its uneniable that well before 1.22 came out or was even announced, even when Automata was a game we were waiting to come out, DOD1 was always loved and remembered fondly for the messy little piece of garbage it was, so lets not pretend this "muh soul" attitude towards this game is anything new, cause it has always been there.

IIRC, this is stated somewhere in Grimoire Nier where it says the main reason D&P(not the specific pair in Nier's Villlage, but the entirety of their sets) didn't act sooner is cause the merging can only happen when the replicant winnlingly accepts the gestalt, which was always thought to be an automatic process cause replicants were never meant to gain consciousness and would just do as they're instructed, which in turn is why our specific pair mentions they intended to wait another 100 hundred years or so, cause thats the time it would take for the full set of current generation replicants to be replaced by a new set, which they hoped to be able to shape into being more controllable and prevent them from gaining consiousness.
