i think this second season actually represents neil trying to correct his mistakes in both subtle and unsubtle ways. they made joel's murder and the events surrounding it a lot softer and more palatable. manny didn't spit on his corpse in the show. ellie said nice things about joel to jessie before he died. abby is obviously neither jacked nor unattractive, which automatically makes her more relatable to 99.9% of people. they also showed her motivations by the firefly graves before the act itself, mitigating the audiences reflexive rage even more.
