Because it had unique features that people liked, and more than half of the Switch’s best games are ports from it. Salesfag all you want, if this thing didn’t exist switch would have sold 30-40M tops.

The reason it failed was Nintendo launched it too late. It was a PS3 competitor that came out less than two years before PS4. If Nintendo gave it the specs to hang with PS4 or if they had launched it a few years earlier it would have done fine.

The hardware is more than capable of it, especially with the FOSS upscalers we have now.

Really the only major hangup is the capacitive touch screen isn't great for ALL ds games and Gyroscopic devices aren't really standardized in home computing requiring you to pipe it through steam input or run a local server to access the output (requires root access to the device; changes to which will be reverted when SteamOS updates).
And (most of) this can be done without risking any hardware issues on the device and is entirely within standard operation

I really don't know. It had one solid year (2014) and the second screen usage was never more interesting than in Nintendoland, which was supposed to be a proof-of-concept game

When it was current there were massive droughts between releases as it was Nintendo's first HD console to develop for.

I thought the concept was a joke but still bought it day 1 to play NSMBU (which was mediocre). But in its short life span it got a bunch of games. In comparison, the Switch has been out for over twice the length of the Wii U and has ten times the games but still can't reach the software quality level that was peak Wii U. Sadly Nintendo is destined to be on some kind of see saw where good decisions are balanced by bad decisions and good decisions only happen in the face of ruin.
