I think this means that this is supposed to be a "twist", that Odd Rock is actually a girl who was transformed.
It can't be a twist because that is the key art that is on the game cover.
It can only mean that Pauline Jr. is revealed in a Bananza Direct, or another trailer.
It's old key art that may have changed as the game developed. It's entirely possible that they had this female character and then for whatever reason changed to some rock side kick character. However, the introduction video for the character:

This doesn't sound like a character who knows what they are and what they're doing. Almost... as if they were suddenly transformed with a curse? The Pauline character has a purple rock wristband as well.
Of course there will be a twist with the little rock, its a character that doesnt make much sense at the moment. If it was its actual form, it wouldve been formally introduced since the beggining, ex: a plot about a tribe of little sentinent rocks in trouble which need DKs help, and this isnt the case (DK is there for the stolen bananas), its the only sentinent rock with that form and characteristics, and the enemy "rocks" have a real form anyway (golden skelletons). We are still missing the main villain reveal (even if it isnt K. Rool, theres evidence that thered someone else behind the evil little monkey)

I just think it feels a little "problematic" for modern Nintendo to imply Pauline is a single mom. And the only way to avoid that is by showing the father, but it cant be Mario, so...

Nintendo's retarded canon is that Mario is supposed to be about 24 years old despite looking like he's in his late 30s, so for him to have a little girl who's already looking like she's at least 8 at the absolute youngest, Mario would have to be an underaged father when she was conceived.
