Valkyrie Profile (1999 PSX)

Valkyrie Profile (1999 PSX)

213213.png - 720x508, 564.47K

Unironically the most underrated game of all time. Beautiful spritework, fun gameplay, tragic story and themes about redemption and empathy for those cut down too early in a cold and unforgiving world. A genuine work of art.

I started playing it this year. I need to finish it actually. It feels ahead of its time in some aspects.

Love valkyrie profile, one of my favorite games ever

youtube.com/watch?v=ertvporcCZI

one thing i autistically love is that the game teaches you stuff but its not teaching Lenneth, its more like shes teaching you. For example in every new boss fight lenneth says stuff like "Mmm this enemy is armored, we need to break through first" and then the game teaches you, the player with a text box. Lenneth is cool, she doesnt have to learn shit. All of this is for you. All of this while the hype boss battle theme plays

it is cool shit

LOOK INTO MY EYES

anyone who calls the PS1 the PSX should be thrown into a volcano

Nah fuck that, X is the objectively one of the coolest letters in the alphabet and PSX sounds way cooler

I love how it’s obvious that Lenneth chooses her Einherjar because she feels empathy and sadness for them, not because they are the best warriors. It does a lot to establish her character as a virtuous and kindhearted person despite her trying to remain stoic due to her duties.

you got it backwards anon.

VP was 26 years ago

Oh man

I'm surprised Valkyrie Profile didn't inspire more games. There was that flop from the Skullgirls devs, the Touhou VP trilogy only released its first game and the English patch was lost to time, and the next closest thing I can think of is NEO TWEWY. Even then those only have similarities in combat, not presentation.

i mean, it's a good thing they didn't copy presentation otherwise they would suck

DISTURBING THE PEACEEEEE LOOK INTO MY EEEEYYYEEEEESS

IT SHALL BE ENGRAVED UPON YOUR SOUL!

Why are the super barks from this game so memorable?

Lezard Valeth is unironically the villain Ive empathized the most with.
I need to replay this with a guide in hand, I missed 2/3 of the game and only realized about that after looking at a summary of the plot of the games (this and sequel, the only games in the franchise, because they never released more games after).

You all empathize with him because like him you want to fuck Lenneth.

It's the PS junior.

Valkyrie Profile's successor made by the same director.

I wish VP2 got even half as much love as 1 does, because mechanically its still an amazing game even if the story isn't quite as deep as 1.

superior sequel is completely ignored

Every single time. It happened with Chrono Cross and Grandia 2, too.

I dont know, I quite liked that game is a sequel disguised as a prequel, it was a nice twist.

Chrono Cross

Cross got shit on because it was a large departure from Trigger that only really tied in at the last hour (and pretty poorly) and people really just wanted Trigger 2.
VP2 is still pretty similar in most aspects, just without as many interesting plot threads.

That said I do still prefer Cross.

I played on an emulator and the game froze sometimes, including during the dragon girls ultimate, the game still progressed but the image stayed static.

Trigger 2

But for what purpose, did boomers really? The plot of Trigger closed pretty good with no bait for a sequel.

Maybe i'm trippin or pullin shit out of my ass, but i recall Silmeria being hard to emulate. Maybe that's the reason why it's not as discussed as Lenneth.
Thought on Covenant of the Plume? I quite like it, even if it's pretty different from the rest.

Started to play Vakyrie Profile Silmeria just recently. Should I play every game from the start? What's the correct order?

It depends what you mean by inspiration. Copying the game 1:1 would be a huge mistake because it has a mix of mechanics that worked due to the particular vision of the devs. But if you mean the more gritty, grounded form of fantasy that is not kawaii moe bullshit of modern RPGs, I absolutely agree. The game has fantastic art direction.

did boomers really

Not really, the Cross hate didn't really start until much much later after Trigger's resurgence due to youtube personalities. I doubt most people that talk shit about it ever actually played it.

Would make sense, I actually bought the game and still have it, I just haven't unboxed my PS2 from storage in a long time but it keeps calling to me.

Thought on Covenant of the Plume?

I got filtered hard by it, wasn't a fan but also didn't get far enough to give it a good honest review.

Silmeria is a sequel, you should play the PS1 game first.

with no bait for a sequel.

Someone didnt play the DS version.
Dalton BTFO Crono and co.

Knights in the Nightmare is a different genre and more linear, but it copies the idea of recruiting dead characters and reliving their final moments, and uses that to gradually reveal the events leading up to the game. Not a mindblowing story, but it manages some good reveals with it.

Someone didnt play the DS version

Ah yes, the DS version that came AFTER CC.

Favorite Einhearjar?
Badrach is my favorite. Even a piece of shit can do a good deed in his life.

Badrach.jpg - 1080x1670, 138.49K

Sad that Tri Ace peaked on the psx
Glad they're still around at least

precisely why I dropped it. its rarity turned it into this

ZOMG GOAT PSX GAYM

just like the Lunar gayms. then you play them and realize you've been had because they are middling to bad in quality. or you never realize it and continue to have terminal shit taste for all eternity

Maybe i'm trippin or pullin shit out of my ass, but i recall Silmeria being hard to emulate.

No, you're right about that. It had issues in PCSX2 for a long time, and I couldn't run it on my cfw PS3 either. Personally it threw out a lot of what I liked about the first game, and while I liked part breaking the movement in combat felt like it existed to enable cheese rather than add depth, so it didn't leave a lasting impression on me like Lenneth's game did. Arngrim had some good cutscene animations at least.

Didn't his one good deed lead to that little girl releasing a sealed demon that petrified and killed an entire village, save the girl who freed it?

belenus is my nigga, i never send him up

I figured. It only has 2 games?

I enjoyed the irony in her recruitment scene, and even if it added nothing beneficial I liked the mermaid transform animation when casting.

It also has a DS game as well. But I think it's a spinoff.

Not from what i remember. There's no mention of the girl he released being the one that released the demon in that village.
Had an interesting story, but i usually send him alongside the archer kid.
Love her. Yeah, her story is bittersweet. And i love her hand gun gesture in her animation.

Theres also the newest PS4 game that released, that was mediocre as hell as far as I have heard.

Belenus for males, Shiho for females, Lorenta for hags

can't get Genevieve

:(

He sure has one of the most memorable scenes

31-DwQWLQ6.png - 640x448, 54.89K

Really awful game. Had been saving it for a rainy day but played it relatively recently.
It has nice presentation and some of the music is good but that's where the pro's end.
The gameplay and level designs aren't good, but where it really falls apart is the writing and pacing and localisation - it really is awful, and it's so slow and dreary i had trouble keeping my eyes open.

PS - The voice acting is like nails on a chalkboard.

*I am shocked there are so many fans of it, Tri-Ace games all have this thin layer of quality on the outside but when you play them they completely fall apart. It's all style, no substance.

This game's popularity here goes to show that you people will rate anything with a pair of anime tits in it highly. It's really pathetic.

Does Xenogears live up to this game? I remember fucking loving VP but ive never tried Xeno

47-uX4n2SB.png - 640x448, 118.95K

a pair of anime tits

On a game where the MC is always covered up, in armor at worst and a full dress at best

Always thought she was a bit wasted.
She only appears in like a single story. Granted, her dungeon being a castle in the sky is pretty darn cool. But she should have been a recurring villain and a sort of nemesis to Leneth.

spend 30 minutes in an emotional story

immediately send them up to Valhalla because Odin needs a child that swims

Game would be better If the requirements were different for each playthrough. Too many units never get any use because they either suck, or are just ideal for transfer

That wasn't even an official game. Square Enix just handed Tri-Ace's IP over to a studio known for mediocre action games to do as they pleased with.

that scene awakened something in me

Xeno is a pretty different beast. But if you liked VP, i'm inclined to say you'll like it too.
Xeno is a lot more straight forward, since you don't have to piece the plot together through events and dungeons. More focused in a single cast, compared to VP's almost anthological narrative. It's also way more ambitious with it's world building (Perfect Works is borderline necessary to get a full picture of the game). And the infamous 2nd disc gives you a summary of what should be happening because they ran out of budget/time (because of Spirits Within, lmao).
Also the gameplay isn't as fun, and it's pretty braindead, even compared to other JRPGs.
Still, i love it with all my soul, so you should give it a try.

Lacan.jpg - 1816x607, 202.89K

it doesn't even have Arngrim. Literally one of the few continuities is that Armgrim's soul is cursed to be intertwined with the Valkyrie and will always reappear as her einherjar. I know there's someone similar to Arngrim, but that's just cope

I've always preferred Grandia 2 more than 1. I guess it depends if you light hearted or darker toned stories because the mood between games is vastly different.

41251.jpg - 620x878, 140.36K

Spirits Within

God that things damage was heard even on other franchises.

Wait, there's only 2 games? But this game looks fantastic. Maybe I'm overhyping but it's leagues beyond mediocre FFs and Dragon Quest, which keep getting infinite entries despite their failures. Why didn't this turn into a popular franchise?

Yes, theres only TWO games worth playing, nothing else, dont bother.

Why didn't this turn into a popular franchise?

Lowest common denominator, you cant look at something like FF and pretend it doesnt have spectacle to back up multiple entries.
t. FF fag.

protectcccc

every single scene with Alicia awakens something within me, to be honest

It had a game, a prequel/sequel that explains a lot of the first game, a weird tactics game for the DS that's less focused on the Valkyries, a FUCKING GACHA TITLE and whatever the new slop was that forgot there was a larger story

The series was always a little messy. Odin is defeated at the end of the first game, and yet he keeps popping back up as both friend and foe? The entire series needs to be remade as a single title.

After the SquareEnix merger, Tri-Ace was never provided a budget to do anything again. They have directors and producers still interested in making a Valkyrie Profile 3, but they can't do shit without the green light for it.

Male: Lucian, cool design, and Eric Stuart saying ROUND RIP SABRE in his Brock voice cracks me up.
Female: Yumei, because she's cute, mermaids are cute, and her little finger gun animation is cute too.

Shitenix sitting sabotaging an IP once again

Every day I'm more convinced that shit company needs to burn to the ground.

Man I wish Lucian was more important.

Square Enix doesn't own tri-Ace. They publish, they don't provide funding. tri-Ace has to find its own money and decide where to go from there. It had nothing to do with Square Enix and everything to do with Infinite Undiscovery being such a colossal failure it nearly took them under.

This is some insane bait.

Tri-Ace always has to suffer great lengths in order to release anything. At least SO2R was pretty well received.

And the infamous 2nd disc gives you a summary of what should be happening because they ran out of budget/time (because of Spirits Within, lmao).

Spirits Within killed its potential sequel, not Xenogears itself.

Given that Star Ocean First Departure, Second Evolution (PSP/PS4), Second Story R, and Valkyrie Elysium were all made without Tri-Ace, SO6 didn't get to begin development until the mobage died 2.5 years after the Tri-Ace producer stepped down and SE ran it into the ground, and the kinds of dodgy answers given whenever Tri-Ace employees are asked about upcoming games in interviews, I have a hard time believing SE doesn't have some kind of predatory deal with them.

Mystina is talking to you, Anon Babble

Wow I haven't heard about this game since it came out.

Square Enix as publisher owns the property, of course. tri-Ace can show up any time to make a game for them. But that doesn't mean producers appear out of thin air to wait on them.

Jun[1].jpg - 800x1024, 395.09K

So is fault of Shit Enix.

Same. Too much of Valkyrie Profile's combat is just watching cutscenes, also ridiculously easy if you get to initiate combat. The first one has much more style though, but I've always been a gameplay first kind of guy.

damn these rich people, not giving us their money for no good reason

stole the font from ff3 us

Let me give the IP you created to a literally who nepobaby

Failure

Lose money

WTF THIS IS THE FAULT OF THOSE TINY DEVELOPER! BAKA YAROUUU!!!! SHARE HOLDER SAMA SAVE MEEE!!!!

Shit enix deserves to die.

38 year old boomer here. I remember playing (probably renting) VP1 on PS1 and absolutely hating it. Nothing about it made any sense to me. The storytelling, the gameplay. There were way too many JRPGs on PS1 and I couldn't be assed to learn this one. I'm not sure I even made it past chapter 1.
Many years later when I was looking to expand my PSP collection I saw VP:Lenneth on sale for like $10 or something. I said fuck it and bought it, but this time as I played the game I used a guide on GameFAQs to help me out. I ended up liking the game a LOT more this time around. So much so that immediately after finishing it, I went on SE's official store and ordered a new copy of VP2.
To this day I still actually consider VP2 my favorite JRPG of all time. The storytelling is a little worse, since all the tragic einharjar backstories are just a few sentences of text now, and some of the plot twists were completely nonsensical, but the gameplay is just so fucking kino it outweighs the bad. The voice acting was also much improved, especially Lezard's which I would consider Liam O'Brien's best work ever, long before he became knew as Lord Illidan or any Critical Role faggotry.

I played it on the vita, it was so bad. It barely ran and had constant crashing even on the PS4.

Celia’s story honestly hit me the hardest. Her lover gets struck down right in front of her, all of her friends die, and she never gets an answer in the end as the last person she knew is nothing more than a suit of empty armor that falls apart in front of her, never finding out that she lost everyone in a hollow pursuit of justice for a friend who’s life was saved by the woman he loved at the cost of her own life, only for him to give up that life in vain trying to reverse her sacrifice. You never even find out what ultimately happens to her. The story is just so wonderfully tragic in how well executed.

IMG_3495.jpg - 640x448, 43.21K

You didn't even make an argument, you made up nonsense in your head and vomited it at me. Go be schizo somewhere else, the publisher is not responsible for the developer not having funds.

I love both also. VP1 is about tragedy and empathy while VP2 is about redemption. That’s why the story is a little more lighthearted in two as the goal is to give back the lives of the Einherjar that were cut short as opposed to take sympathy on their souls by recruiting them. That’s why you can free them and return them to their former lives. That said, both have phenomenal gameplay and are among my top 10 favorite games of all time

She died along with everyone else when Ragnarok happens. Just a faceless nobody.
Makes it even more tragic in a way.

I don't like JRPGs with missable content and strict true ending requirements so I never played this. I, the player, should be able to experience everything or nearly everything in a single playthrough and if I want to replay the game later it will be because the game is good and not because I got cucked out of content for not backtracing half way through a dungeon to the village three dungeons ago to sniff a random unnamed NPC village girl's panties. This is the worst thing about a lot of older games, JRPGs in particular.

Xenogears is overrated shit compared to Valkyrie Profile

why not release this on PC?

Missable content was added to these games as a means to sell strategy guides and boost replayability. Don't get me wrong, I agree it's lame as fuck to play a 60+ hour long game and realize you're cucked out of the best weapon in the game because you opened a random chest in the first two hours (looking at you, FF12), or be cucked out of the best ending because you couldn't recruit Bozo the Clown because you didn't backtrack ot the first town at a very specific part in the story (looking at you, Suikoden series), but since there was no such thing as DLC content or post-release patches they intentionally put it esoteric shit like that to keep people playing the game or encourage you to buy the official guides.

Valkyrie Profile 3: Hrist any day now, bros

Schizo

Saying the truth

Shitenix came out some time ago after their last financial report saying the fault of them losing money is on the small/side projects they fund and not their own hubris. Obviously they never think giving a niche IP as Valkyrie Profile to a random no-dev who's probably the lover of some suit in the company, thus their own decisions, are the culprit. Not my problem if you can't keep up with the news, anon.

You get a shit ending in this game if you don't backtrack?

99% of the game is missable content including the only worthwhile ending

no new game plus so you have to do another 20-30 hour run if you fuck up (you will)

hard mode is actually easy mode because it lets you level more

hard mode is actually the default mode because it has more content

Nice “game”
Myriad of fucking retarded decisions just like every other TriAce game
Why the FUCK would I want to trudge through 30+ hour RPGs multiple times if there’s no actual incentive beyond missables that don’t carry over
Why the FUCK does Tales do it right with the grade shop and shit like Star Ocean 4 requires 4 playthroughs + grinding of a 60+ hour game with no new game plus or carry over beyond fucking battle trophies
Fuck you and fuck this studio
TriAce more like TriWaste

TriAce more like TriWaste

156205039775.jpg - 628x879, 171.01K

Not necessarily a "shit" ending, but VP1 is quite literally known (or at least used to be known) as THE game where if you don't use a guide, you basically have a 0% chance of getting the "true" ending.

And this applies to both games or just one? At what point your save becomes fucked beyond salvation?

Tri-Ace's thing back in the day was short games with variable midgame and endings for replayability. I get disliking not doing everything in one playthrough since I'm usually the same, but it's not like you're bricking your run in a 100 hour game if you don't get a specific ending.

Xenogears story and world is so fucking good and perfect on the first CD even the literally worst experience ever (CD) doesn't take away its spot on the top 10 jrpgs. I hate SE so fucking much

Just the first one. You need to have a certain seal value, need to obligatory send up Lucian among many other things, go to a specific place on the map at a specific moment, you need to find AND finish Lezard's tower.
Its very specific.

need to obligatory send up Lucian

God why, he was the most interesting character in my playthrough, a beast of a party member too.

you need to find AND finish Lezard's tower

Funny that I did both of those things (Lezard and Lucian) and STILL got a subpar ending, lmao.

I think some degree of missable content is kind of required simply because the world would have to remain incredibly static otherwise. Xenoblade dropped most missable content starting with 2 and I think it suffers for it. 3 especially just never has any feeling of real stakes because of it.

You need to go to Brahms' NEET castle too.
Lucian is pretty meh though, only thing he's good at is getting drops because Round Rip Saber has a ton of multipliers for that, he kinda sucks at most other things, he can't reach the insane damage output of people like Belenus, he can't charge PWS like Arngrim, his combo is pretty mediocre as well, you don't lose anything by sending him.

I wish more games had Legend of Legaia fight system.
Pulling off a bunch of Soul Calibur combos each fight never got old.

The first one has much more style though

heavily disagree
