In fighting games/hero shooters/mobas, one might argue that "the gameplay is different / they have different roles and abilities" so it's perfectly understandable.
But in games like MonHun and MMOs where it's literally just cosmetics? All of my friends just made male OCs.

It really only matters if the game was made with actual roleplaying in mind. If the dialogues, stats, and how NPCs and the world react don't change at all, I don't really see any reason to play female characters.
