The funniest thing about all of this is that this is quite literally just the tip of the iceberg. There were so many projects across multiple companies that are or were being developed in lock-step of this new strangeness (I call it Netflixation) that's been hobbling game development for years now. It doesn't matter if it's new or old franchises, there's been a near complete rejection of pandering by consumers in regards to the shilling towards the lowest common denominator and their overblown budgets, lack of any actual aesthetic or intellectual depth, and sheer technical ineptitude on display by the developers. Concord, Hyenas, Marathon, Veilguard, Suicide Squad, Star Wars: Outlaws, AC: Shadows, etc. are all bad for multiple reasons, many of which are shared. You will still have some sales from some of them based upon name alone, but nostalgia is a well that runs dry quick.
The problem is, the person who IS the lowest common denominator will still feel obligated to defend their purchase, not because they seriously love said game in question, but because they either found it "ok" or it's a franchise they want to persist and that anything considering it to be worse than it actually is will result in buyer's remorse and actual introspection. I actually feel like the Marathon drama is actually more embarrassing than the Concord drama, because it's the attempted resurrection of an IP and trying to completely rewrite said IP into an extraction shooter that shares zero commonalities with said game, except there's practically almost no one who fits that lowest common denominator category who played the original Marathon trilogy. For fuck's sake, they were in a niche within a niche (Macintosh only games) when the IP was active.
