So taking Bungie at its word here with how it happened - In a team this big, it would be his job to implement robust systems to ensure that multiple parties are checking for things like this as well as ensuring those parties are operating effectively. The exact statement included 'checked in in 2020' - this would refer to their Version Control. So they can accurately trace back where something came from, but clearly did not have any systems in place for reviewing checked in material with a lens for 'how was this made'
A robust system would include vetting any assets going into a production build (anything public facing) and basically having an approval stamp on them - clearly they can find where/how these assets came from, they just didn't exercise it until they were forced to.

They have to scrub and rework all of it now. They have to make the game look different enough that they can reasonably refute the claims that the art style was stolen. They are incapable of doing things properly, so they'll fuck that up too and this shitshow will only get worse.

Also, perception is reality in this context, and people will swarm on this as yet another excuse to shit on this game, so they might as well have lifted the entire style from this artist because the impact this will have is comparable.

I would agree if Marathon wasn't so blatantly copying Antireal's art directly from their portfolio. Designer's Republic and Wipeout look similar to both, but they're not nearly 1:1 in the same way that Marathon and the original art is. It's like, some chump probably saw the art style and decided to ape it and worked backwards from there to get inspirations.

This is what would be best for the game for a litany of reasons, but imagine trying to justify it to the higher-ups. It would be cheaper to cancel the entire project and take the tax write-off. Marathon was already going down in flames before it even launched, but this could be the lead weight that breaks the studio's back.

They're trying to by saying it was an unknown former employee that did it. When in reality they need to fire the entire senior art staff right or at bare minimum fire their director who was literally following the artist.

I feel like you could probably find a few examples that are ridiculously close for Antireal, but you could also probably fish similar for the other 'inspirations'. Swiss typography was another one they threw out there and while it's not blatant plagiarism, you can definitely see pretty direct parallels. Again, this isn't excusing Bungie by any means, but visual styles in general are probably just going to be the equivalent of photo/kitbashing.

The art director is the one that probably verbally suggested this persons art as inspiration, Sandeep then downloaded and submitted their entire art porfolio into the pool of assets and was shortly fired after this. Most likely picked up and decimated by the rest of the team since the pool is tainted, the laziest probably being contracted pajeets from India just straight up copy and pasting from the pool of resources into the poorly developed maps and items.
It looks like an issue from the top down because the art director himself had been following that artist since pre-production of the game and couldn't even define what the targeted style is with vague terms thrown out like digital realism when questioned a couple months ago.
