Maelle's end, ignoring Verso, is everything the main characters were trying to accomplish and is brimming with happiness.

Let's be honest. Without the jump scare, no one with two brain cells would be arguing Verso's end as "the good end." Tards needed to be reminded of the price to pay staying in the canvas so that they know it isn't perfect. Unfortunately, the average IQ of the player base is extraordinarily low. So instead of seeing the jump scare as a way of leveling the playing field in a "this ending is neither good nor bad" type of way - it pivoted heavily in the other direction. Of course the painted people are real, the entire first parts of the game don't even matter if they're not. Furthermore, if they aren't real then there is literally no emotional weight to the final choice, and all those painted characters we know and like may as well be killed without a thought. The idea of them not being real is simply not sustainable for maintaining the narrative.

Also the "destroying the canvas" angle only moves it further away from being an analogy for grief. In real life you can't just erase a method of escapism or addictions, drugs or gambling or alcohol will always exist, the possibility of relapse is always present. The idea that you could just erase the object of escapism and then suddenly you can move in just isn't really applicable to the real world, it says nothing about moving on from grief, it kind of distracts from the idea really.
It's why I'm not really a fan of the ending choice. It feels less about the message as some people claim, and just feels like forced drama, like they were baiting online arguments.

The people in line in her ending aren't alive. They're background characters for her make believe world. They do not move, you cannot see their faces.

It's not that, it's that the reality is only the product of Maelle and effectively he is her metaphysical slave until the candle burns out.
He has no being or meaning nor even a proper death, just fade out in the slave role Maelle's grief paints for him.
Where she defeated him and his will and subordinated it to her.

The game is unironically too intelligent for some people. I can't believe people swear that Renoir is a good guy, when he is the one committing omnicide, and saving her wife is not a good enough excuse.
There is a reason the first act is called Gustave. The people in the canvas have completely real lives, and it doesn't matter if they were created out of grief. They are real, and even the 95% of players cared when Gustave died.
Renoir is ultimately the most morally wrong person and irresponsible character on the story.
