I was hoping that the dragon segments would be more bullet hell. Lock on combat just isn't very fun when Doom has generally let you move around and shoot freely. I expect there to be a decent dragon combat mod for GZDoom in a month.

One thing I have to give credit to teternal for is that the raytracing looks much nicer than Dark Ages'. I was kind of surprised that there were hardly any opportunities to see the environment or your character reflected while Eternal had a lot of shiny weapon skins and reflective glass in some maps.

The alternative we got in Dark Ages is even worse. Weapons take forever to cycle and you can't block while switching so you just stick to 1 gun for the entirety of a fight. They could have implemented a weapon limit and it would have changed nothing.

You can kind of see your dude reflected in some blood pools and iron maidens. But glass in some levels just doesn't let you see your dude or the environment as it does in Eternal.

2016 just isn't very good. Easy fights, boring arenas, no movement, no mods. Eternal is better because it expanded upon those mechanics to make the game its own.

I just got out of the way of enemies when I wanted to switch weapons. It's not that hard to move around to a safe spot with the shield charge. The original games and 2016 were probably the most elegant about it with having normal weapon switching and no reliance on using a shield.

2016 was even more broken than Eternal when it came to weapon switching.
The originals didn't have fast weapon switching, but there was reason to switch guns. That doesn't exist in Dark Ages because everything was designed to function more or less identically and be equally viable in every scenario.
