STOP. BUYING. INDIE GAMES

i usually just don't like indie games. they don't make games for me.

"Indie" games

Posts industry plant crap

Not my problem

These three forces, he argues, will combine to "drive career professionals from the traditional, professionalized side of the games industry."

"Some of these people will decide to go indie," he continues. "Others will leave gaming altogether. And in between there’s a vast spectrum of irregular working arrangements available."

This sounds like a good thing. I mean, E33 was literally made off of Ubisoft employees going indier, not really indie

I'll buy whatever I want.

Indie games really do suck tho

Only corporations should be able to make games! Think about all the poor HR workers and community managers. They need jobs, too! You HAVE to hire them!

industry plant

Seething

Ironically I just bought 60 single dev games for less than 300$. All of them allow me to play as monsters, create my own character, or involve hardcore feral on human rape.

Not clicking your link. Why can't the industry just make games people want to play? When the best game I've played in 20 years is a fucking indie title made by 2 guys in their garage, there is something deeply wrong with the current state of the industry.

I basically only play indie games lmao
AAA is so shit

V rising a good indie choice there

nah it just means you have shit taste

Ok, actually, I'm gonna be fair to the article because this is an interesting read. This is a valid argument they make.

file.png - 712x545, 56.77K

Who's the people in between?

It’s like the exact opposite for me. My eyes glaze over looking at your slop collection.

pastebin

lmao

Both AAA and indie are shit nowadays.
One is just dead and the other is just the same coypasted metroidvania slop or pretentious shit with shit artstyle.
AI will only make things worse from now on.

I just took the Retro pill and never looked back.

THIS, on the other hand, is not a valid point.

Because it's pretty obvious that there was a severe over-estimation of writers needed for the industry and the industry is simply course-correcting.

Artists and sound designers are the big ones. And also the programmers that aren't the most experienced but are absolutely still vital for grunt work. This is something that the article doesn't touch on as far as I can see, but it's dealing with the issue that people are becoming very reliant on engines doing the work for them.

file.png - 699x278, 33.46K

and the other is just the same coypasted metroidvania slop or pretentious shit with shit artstyle.

why do you normalfags keep outing yourself by parroting this dumbass opinion?

The fuck is your problem?

Why can't the industry just make games people want to play?

because the people leading the industry only consider how much money their projects make, not if they are fun or good products

video games are so unprofessional now

anyway, let me get back to taking bribes from every publisher to shill their games on my glorified blog

Take a look at every popular indie title, it's always some

hey remember this '98 game

remember this one game from your childhood

remember this movie

remember this anime

remember this game that came out last year

remember this game that came out five years ago

remember this movie

remember Japan

remember 90's Japan

remember 1980's Japan

remember 2000's Japan

remember the 1980's

remember your childhood

remember this 1986 art style

remember that 1990s MTV grunge

uhhh remember Japan

I remember all of that, fuck off. I don't want to live with a memory disorder.

I do like it, but it was so bare bones on release that i didn't play it much. Apparently now, 3 years later, that changed a lot but those hours i spent with it soured me so much that i have no desire to play it again. I also heard that they just added more of what was already there instead of adding new mechanics.

archive it anon, that way even you dont have to connect to their server

NOOOOOOOO YOU CAN'T JUST MAKE WHAT YOU WANT

AAA is dead because retarded companies spend millions of dollars of pointless shit and then cries because it didn't break even, or because shareholders wanted more

I never played any indie but let me tell you what I know about them

The guy modeling shoe strings in CoD games.
The guy making sound effects for every door opening different.
Basically just people hired for the sake of hiring people to look like a good investment for investors.

youre a dumbass nigger and you get your opinions from other Anon Babbletards that dont play indies

I will once they stop making games that I want to play

Name 10 indie games that haven't been done before by an older game.

Why yes I do think it's annoying that it's 2025 and we CONSTANTLY get this shit.

remember that 1990s MTV grunge

Which game is that, I'll buy it

Name 10 older games that didn't do what an older game didn't already do.

I don't know how to do that

inb4 lurk moar

You are the first person in my years on this website I've seen mention doing this, cannot lurk any harder.

Here's a concise summary of the article:
Summary:

The article explores a growing trend in the game industry called "deprofessionalization"—where small or solo developers are increasingly producing successful games, while large studios struggle. This shift, visible at PAX East 2025, reflects a changing landscape where:

Small teams dominate the expo floor, often composed of just 1–3 people.

Success stories like Balatro and Schedule I suggest big games no longer require big teams.

This has led to fewer traditional game development jobs, especially for roles like marketing, narrative, art, and audio, which are increasingly treated as gig work or outsourced tasks.

Veteran developers can still thrive as consultants, but mid-level professionals risk being left behind.

AI, contract work, and demand for cheaper content are accelerating the shift, especially hurting artists and writers.

While the indie market is commercially viable, success is rare, and many indie devs still struggle financially.

Ultimately, while this trend enables more creative freedom and new voices, it threatens job stability, undervalues collaborative roles, and narrows the definition of what “professional” game development looks like.

You're a stupid fucking nigger who has never played a video game in his life and thinks indie slop is some pioneer shit.
Literal subhuman mutt behaviour.

take your ass back to r*ddit and stop larping like you posses a brain capable of using an emulator retard

My PAX trip validated my fear that three professions are especially vulnerable in this deprofessionalized world: artists, writers, and those working in game audio or music.

All three risk compartmentalization as "asset creators," their work treated as products you can purchase off the store shelf.

As someone who recently shipped his second game as a writer, the cuts to game narrative teams hit close to home. The GDC 2025 State of the Industry survey reported that of the 11 percent of developers laid off in the last year, 19 percent of them worked in game narrative, the highest of any responding demographic.

Nope, AI got it wrong, as usual. Retarded bot.

people doing shit that players don't care about, obviously.

The game is very complete now and worth a play through (on brutal) but it is somewhat more of the same. On the good news side, they also added a lot of QOL that make it a joy to play through with a friend

tranny newfag seething

Copied from where? I literally named by thinking for a few seconds. You'd be able to do this too if you actually played video games.
I accept your concession though

I RISKED MY CAREER TRYING TO SAVE VIDYA!

HOW CAN YOU DO THIS!

AM I THE ONLY SANE ONE HERE!?

deprofessionalization

Is this the new corpo buzz term after AAAA didn't stick?

I accept your concession though

Only reddit fags say this when they lost the argument.

Ultimately, while this trend enables more creative freedom and new voices, it threatens job stability, undervalues collaborative roles, and narrows the definition of what “professional” game development looks like

Um... So what? How's that my problem? Is that just a ragebait article?

Its a different thing but is a new buzz word, yes. Theres a pastebin somewhere in the thread but it really isnt worth checking out.

Maybe next time you can win the argument by having one to begin win :)

"professional" developers are fucking stupid, speaking from experience
Most of them like videogames or else they wouldn't be entering an industry with the worst pay and retention available for any skill set you could be bringing to game development but very very few are capable of figuring out what makes a game fun or unique in the first place because most of them just played whatever AAA slop that got advertised to them without much thought, and the ones who do know how to make games are stifled by executives who don't even play videogames in the first place and just think about making product just like other product and selling product to acquire profit
Expedition 33 is such a big deal because because it's those same people who wanted to be in a professional environment but given indie-level freedoms and no retarded executives breathing down their necks, but it's also an extreme exception that only worked out because the studio founder comes from a rich family and he already had a ton of money to do whatever he wanted.

Auteurs aren't a new thing though, and most indies are effectively auteurs, but there used to be a period of time where they were a lot more common and have massively dwindled down because of corporate enshittification requiring everyone to take as little risks as possible only to end up making products meant for nobody anyway

uh uh fuck n-no you are the newfag

stop larping tourist, youre only capable of parroting what you think Anon Babble is by defaulting to le all video games are LE BAD except for LE OLD games

basado

to begin win :)

Good morning Saar

Platformers existed before

Fighting games existed before

SHMUPS existed before

Puzzle games existed before

Number of games created in the past year are likely an order of magnitude greater than the time span for each of those games to be released

aaaaaa.jpg - 736x408, 19.17K

I don't know what your argument is even supposed to be considering that big budget games are the most derivative shit imaginable lmao

Not him but you didnt even do anything to "win" the dumb ass argument. All u said was "all copied" like a smug retard.

You don't even have vidya related reaction images you stupid newfag.
and stay there

Engage in an argument that's clearly made in bad faith

Newfag or retarded?

Cobbling together artists and managers there is retarded.
Newsflash: The vast majority of vidya released nowadays lives by its art, animation and sound design. So, no, those people are not less essential than programmers to the average game, even the average indie game.

And I say this as someone that has undoubtedly played more text based games than you have.

why would you out yourself like this?

How much money did Balatro make?

Balatro generated over $600,000 in its first few hours and sold more than 5 million copies by January 2025. Its success was attributed to its popularity and various awards it received shortly after launch.

How many developers worked on Balatro?

Balatro was developed by a single developer named LocalThunk. This solo developer created the game over a two-and-a-half year period.

How much money did Doom Dark Ages make?

The exact revenue for "Doom: The Dark Ages" has not been disclosed, but it has reached over 3 million players shortly after its release, making it the biggest launch in the franchise's history. This success is partly attributed to its availability on Xbox Game Pass, which likely boosted its player count significantly.

How many people worked on Doom Dark Ages?

Sorry, no relevant information was found in our search.

Ur both retarded was my point. You engaged with his dumbass shit so you already lost even if you're more "right" since trolling a troll on 4gay is just shitting on shit. We're all worse off for having to read ur dumbass replies. Stop it, get some help.

>Platformers existed before

>Fighting games existed before

>SHMUPS existed before

>Puzzle games existed before

Please, name them, I'll wait

don't know what your argument is even supposed to be

Maybe you should learn english before trying to argue on the internet you stupid sandnigger.

Based?

Why are you brown?

Based slop enjoyer.

Thanks chatgpt, you always give us the facts.

A very good thing. I want gaming to go back to being something that people only did as a passion project. Fuck these unionized troons that don't give a shit about gaming just looking to get rich off the corpse of my favorite franchises from my childhood.
Let the AAA game space die and leave only India studios with like 30 people working on something they really care about. Game engines have come far enough that basically anybody can create high end visuals. They won't be missed.

the biggest games out there is fucking shit like Roblox and Minecraft and those aren't exactly stellar cases of art design

play through with a friend

When i picked up V Rising i was expecting a vampire lord RPG with twin stick combat. But instead i got a bare bones isometric Rust collect&craft game. I thought i could build my vampire castle, have a bunch of slaves that do the collecting/harvesting while i explore and fight and if i get to a certain power level the local villages would band together and hunt me down. More vampire sim and less survival game.

Cobbling together artists and managers there is retarded

No its not, a game needs one or two artists, not the hundreds of rock and fern modelers that AAAs have. A game needs one guy with a cohesive idea doing audio, not dozens of fags.

deprofessionalization

AAA layoff victims have to make up new words to describe their level of seething

this, but unironically

every indie is an early access:

buy game at launch for full price

finish game and move on

months go by: bugfixes and new modes added

a year goes by: many content updates added, game goes on sale regularly

years go by: devs make the last content update. game goes on sale for 3-5 bucks

Le quirky RPG game about muh feelings: CHAPTER 1

Not thanks

Because it's pretty obvious that there was a severe over-estimation of writers needed for the industry and the industry is simply course-correcting.

Yeah, this feels like writers are trying to latch onto the actual problem to make it about themselves as well.
Nearly every game needs an artist, most games don't need a dedicated writer.

Professional game development shouldn't be a thing

i don't care about the industry
i care about fun games
which indies provide
and AAA studios dont

Gaming was built by "deprofessionalism" you fucking wastes of space
Your bloated, unfun, too-many-cooks-but-no-competence approach has been rejected

Obviously it depends on the scale of the game. Expedition 33 needed over 10 artists and had to literally go grab 8 animators from Asia. Don't be stupid.

Who said anything about AAA garbage?

People should stop buying troon indie cancer on Steam and rediscover the retro games that actually inspired entire genres.

Nooooo you have to eat corporate sloppa

Noooo don't buy an indie game think about all the people corpos hire to look good to investors

Nooooooooo you have to engage with games that only exist to up your playtime with 100 skinner boxes so it looks good to out investors

Silence industry "professionals" people are making fun games.

what if atari game but le heckin epic xD

Grow some taste goyllenial

And I don't see a single person talking about the visuals beyond

its not pozzed faggotry

they're still less important than the designers and programmers

You can't even name atari games that are even remotely equivalent to the ones I mentioned.

Competence and knowledge are already being destroyed by massive, overmanaged, overstaffed AAA bloat
Passionate, smaller developers have always driven expertise

The indie scene is plagued with literal faggots anyway. In some cases it's worse because they actually believe their shitty ideology.

If its bad for the industry, its probably good for you

Read the wiki article yourself then: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puzzle_video_game

Donkey Kong isn't a platformer

A game where you traverse across platforms avoiding obstacles

Or you can look at "Jump Bug" or "Track Attack"

Play my quiky troon earthbound ripoff

Being brown isn't a personality

YOU DON'T NEED FIFTY FUCKING ARTISTS

A game can make or break it by their artists, retard. Unlike having 20 middle management type idiots sticking their fingers where they don't belong constantly, artists are an integral part of a game.

Oh no they donated to a scam!

Nintendo literally has a DEI subsection but you'll still buy the latest mario slop

Yep, you can send your people out to gather but they aren't people who exist in the world, they functionally disappear when exploring. And villagers / npcs do not raid your castle.
That said, castle building has more shit you can build now, along with multiple floors and shit. You dont need to gather much of anything except what is directly related to increasing your power, though, so they did a good job of that desu. And since there's benefits to rooms matching the machines in them, it gives a fun "design" challenge to the castle. But yeah id compare it more to say, terraria, as a whole.
Which is to say it's a boss rush game where all the farming necessary is just to fight the next boss again.

deprofessionalization

Honestly don't know how you can be such a blatant shrill for the status quo. I know we're in Trumpian America where leftists and rightos have zero sense of shame and winning is all that matters, but like... just fucking read this article.

"Oh know our overblown, overfunded industry may open up opportunities for creatives and small studios to exist?"

Like what the fuck is this, how did someone write this and look at themselves in the mirror, and why is anyone looking at a diversified creative field as anything bad?

Oh no people might have options instead of being serfs...

"developers with stability" never swing for big shot ideas anymore, they just churn out endless low risk slop

I can tell you're seething

why yes undertale is the only indie game I know about how did you know?

what is this mistery pre-NES donkey kong game that pioneer platforming you're talking about? I can't seem to find it on the link your provided as your source :)

Did you stop supporting 80+ games? or any of the other problems that was effecting the industry.
No.. i don't think i will.

Do you really need me to name all the metroidvania slop too?

All of them are either Pitfall clones, Adventure rip offs or Boxing but with le epic negro xD and you know it

I did not mention Nintendo at all. I'd argue they don't get shit on enough sometimes. Unless you're some buckbroken s0nyp0ny.

yeah name 5

Never said OLD BAD, strawman.

Muh politics

If anything AAA is 100x worse since they'll pander to the faggots and you'll be forced to see it in game.
Disingenuous retard.

I want more AA stuff, though. They tend to be more interesting than AAA while having a bigger budget than one can of pepsi like indies do.

Kill yourself shill

Companies panic when noname creators/studios make better games than them

Total AAA industry death. Crash it down, with no survivors.

The author claims that this deprofessionalization will hurt artists, writers, and musicians when in reality it rewards developers who are more generalist or have multiple skills in favor of specialists.
For an indie game with 1-5 developers you cant hire people to all of these specialized roles, especially for the less essential stuff. Indie development often demands its developers to be skilled in multiple fields as a result. A designer who also makes the music, the programmer who is also marketing the game on social media. Its just the reality of indie game development.

The change in priority between generalist and specialist roles is a constant in every industry and it will change again within the decade.

I don't play indieslop. They're all pretentious games with some underlying message amount trauma of some sort. Give me a dozen CoD bros/kids over a single FNAF fan any day of the week.

AAA killed AA because companies don't want to spend smaller budgets, this is not indies fault

guys please all games except for old games are bad please guys just call me based Ive been baiting for an hour now dont force me to make a twitter thread so people can call me based

Correct, yes, game development is mostly dominated by leftists or at least non alt-righters, whether it's in the AAA side or the indie side.
No fucking shit, Sherlock.

People here are talking about actual games they want to play, not just crying about politics. If you want right-wing games so bad, make your own.

f.jpg - 635x786, 96.55K

What do you even want, just in general

Indie will always be indie so it means try harder find things

AAA studios and publishers bought up and murdered all the AA studios sorry bro

Tim Cain talks a lot about this. He was afraid of the death of generalists just a few years ago. Seems like the industry is course correcting.

>Animators and artists don't matter, it just matters if it's le woke

Your mind on nothing but Anon Babble consumption

Way to miss my point dipshit, not a single person is talking about expedition 33 art design meaning those fags are objectively less important than the actual devs

Can't name them

Thanks for letting everyone know you lost the argument you stupid nigger lol

Dead Cells
Hollow Knight
Blasphemous
Axiom Verge
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
Grime
The Vagrant
Nine Sols
Songbird Symphony
Rainworld

They're not wrong, though. The fear is that studios will move to hiring freelancers for peanuts instead of having professionals in-house doing good work. Pipelining shit like assets and writing is exactly how you end up with modern AAA games, it's just throwing money at the internet and expecting something good will come out of it instead of creating a physical environment for creatives to do their thing to make you money like in the old days. Though the results will be poor either way due to modern corporate culture and micromanagement so if anything this is just a death knell for the current structure of doing business.
It's the age of the idea guy with actual skills to back it up. We're back to the 90s wild west. To the non-Hollywood film making era. I guess I do understand why corpo drones are freaking out, but they can easily get jobs outside of games.

good

Open wide :)
Further, read your own post: You cited:

Super Mario Bros

as a game that "didn't do what an older game didn't already do".

Donkey Kong and others were platformers before Super Mario Bros. Such as:

Mario Bros. (1983, Nintendo)

Jump Bug (1981, Alpha Denshi/Sega)

Congo Bongo (1983, Sega)

Hard Hat Mack (1983, Electronic Arts)

Bagman (1982, Valadon Automation)

Sammy Lightfoot (1983, Sierra On-Line)

Miner 2049er (1982, Big Five Software)

Mr. Do's Castle (1983, Universal)

Space Panic (1980, Universal)

Thank you for conceding, have a nice day.

Your logic is retarded and I'm done talking to you.

Good thing I got Baltero for free.

It's still not a platformer you retard

you have no argument and are thus a rock modeler desperately pretending his job is important

Dang, I was hoping they were going to talk about how "professionalism" is important as developers, i.e. "not openly and actively shitting on and arguing with your potential customers on public forums and social media."
But nope, just more bullshit gatekeeping and whining about bloated budgets not producing mega hits.
Ah well. Fuck 'em. Make good games and I'll buy them. Make shit games and I'll ignore them.

Thank god for AAA games so I can get killed by trans color Darth Vader telling me in an AI voice that the empire values individuality and diversity and that the force doesn't discriminate between ALL the genders.
Instead of this indie slop where I have to google the creators politcal ideology to decide if I like it or not.

AAA slop vs Indie trannies

Lmao, It's good to be a retro CHAD.

didn't read but at the end of the day it's not my fault game companies spend way too much making games and it really wouldn't bother me if the bigger side of the industry went away as they don't make good games anymore

Balatro is one of those games where it's extremely addicting and takes over your life for about 30-40 hours, and then interest in the game just falls off a cliff.

"As someone who recently shipped his second game as a writer, the cuts to game narrative teams hit close to home. The GDC 2025 State of the Industry survey reported that of the 11 percent of developers laid off in the last year, 19 percent of them worked in game narrative, the highest of any responding demographic. Two diverging trends are hurting this field: the growth of successful games that don't feature much narrative (either focusing on deep game mechanics or story-lite multiplayer) and the spread of story-driven games authored by the creative director and maybe one or two collaborators create conditions that lower the number of available jobs.

Game writers have long described frustration with how they're treated by the industry, often brought in later in the process and sometimes treated as if they lie in opposition to the rest of the development team. Some studios leaned on the job title of "narrative designer" for professionals who write and implement narrative events, but that still speaks to a mistrust of the profession, that producing words isn't enough to bring value to a team."

Lmao, this faggot. WRITING IS NOT A PROFESSIONAL SKILL.

Based pirateGOD

And the writerjew reveals itself

Like you would know. Go back

If your response to "rediscover old games" is to become hostile and belligerent, your position, again, is obvious

Which is to say it's a boss rush game where all the farming necessary is just to fight the next boss again.

Yeah if i had known that from the start i would never picked it up. I remember watching some trailer that focused heavily on the vampire lord theme and thought that was the game, not the gathering and crafting.

All of this reminded me of journalists in my country some years ago; when it was decided that anyone could be a journalist (duh?), the class started whining about deprofessionalization (or something similar) among other shit.

These are the real problem, not indie developers. But I guess an article on that wouldn't get clicks.

May the industry continue to be deprofessionalized for a long time to come. I can't think of anything better.

You're doing it again. You're projecting your own strawman on me when I never said old bad

Game writers have long described frustration with how they're treated by the industry, often brought in later in the process and sometimes treated as if they lie in opposition to the rest of the development team. Some studios leaned on the job title of "narrative designer" for professionals who write and implement narrative events, but that still speaks to a mistrust of the profession, that producing words isn't enough to bring value to a team.

writing a screenplay and writing a book are completely different skills too, yet it is somehow bad to have to learn to operate in the interactive narrative space when creating video game narratives? lol

No, the two are definitely connected now. As more and more indie games made by 3 people get made, those are the main people that are gonna get fucked over.

If AI is so powerful how come you are not making your dream game yet, lads?
Surely you know exactly what kind of game you would like to make, right? RIGHT?

the class started whining about deprofessionalization (or something similar)

The people aren't allowed to have a role or even a say in anything. Only the elite class, only the "experts". That's what it boils down to, and they've been throwing a sustained tantrum about the upstart proles having designs above their station for about a decade now

NOOOO CAN SOMEBODY THINK ABOUT THE FAT AND BLOAT PARASITE """DEVS""" EXPLOITING THE SYSTEM AND BALOONING BUDGETS

2 more weeks.

I'm already getting hard at the thought
These big, bloated studios spending big budgets on games that ultimately come out smelling like shit should be cleansed, replaced with indies
Said indies would then form larger companies, and the cycle repeats.
Whether or not they'll learn from these old AAA companies' mistakes we'll just have to see

The vast majority of vidya released nowadays lives by its art, animation and sound design.

No it doesn't. You can maybe make an argument for music, but it has never not been the case that a great soundtrack can be made by one or a few people.

Then what prompted your little unsolicited tantrum in response to his comment?

I don't buy any games, "indie" or otherwise.

And that's a good thing, unironically.

Symphony of the Night, but with furry characters

Calling someone retarded is now throwing a fit

Man, newfags man.

No shit because "industry professionals" basically just means people who know how to use those buzzwords to get venture capitalists to mindlessly throw money at them in hopes of a return.
They have to portray them as a net positive.
Why do you think layoffs happen for positions they immediately need to re-hire for? It's all a grift to look good to investors.

Cut all the company slack!

Art is, and always will be, theft. Nothing is without influence and to act like the less influence something appears to have had as a metric for "goodness" is a tactic only the tasteless abuse.

Wow that is some of the shittiest taste I've ever seen. You're unironically what's wrong with the industry

Okay, what was retarded about it?

THE INDUSTRY IS IN DANGER BECAUSE OF YOU

good.gif - 500x276, 198.35K

You did prove shit yet pajeet

You must be born retarded if you can't tell a statement

nta but you're a retarded nigger and there's no "argument" lol.

What was retarded about saying "rediscover old games"?

Utterly delusional

He's right tho, "professional" game dev died after the 2000s anyway

Even if what you posted were actually true, that is a lot of settings - and I mean a hell lot of it.
Lemme take one as an example.

remember 90's Japan

If you take this setting and decide to branch it into different segments, you could have things like:

tamagochi-inspired monster collector

survival horror in 90s Japan (could even use real disasters they had, like the earthquake in 1995, train crash in 1991, Sarin attack in 1995...)

life simulator

1990s anime style action game

1990s inspired platformer

And so on.
Hell, modern AAA games use more retarded tropes than what you listed with tongue on cheek.

Indie is just slop metroidvania tho

Ive missed talking to you guys, be nice to each other.
If no one likes you here, you're shit out of luck everywhere else.

"N-no! You c-can't just go in under budget, understaffed, and release a better project ahead of schedule! Think of all those people who are also relying on their product to make a living, except they have funds and resources you couldn't ever dream of having access to! You're making them look bad and because of your selfishness they're going to be out of a job!"

Oh no, not the idustry...
Anyway.

De-professionalization is bad for the Marxist fifth columnists that have wormed their way into the industry. But, it is overall better for the consumer.

You're still giving money to people who hate you on a fundamental level.

Being this much of a samefag

You're such a fucking retard holy shit

Look up indie dev

"wow they seem like a dick"

Pirate or just don't buy it

He's right though
Most indie games now seem less about standing on their own and more about referencing (and broadly copying) someone's favorite childhood game, or directly mashing a few of them together
I believe there is such a thing as nostalgia poisoning

Aye.
Thanks for remembering about how those people don't like others taking a share of their power.
And that's enough to make AAA companies shit their pants.

What led you to that conclusion?

If you pirate it, that's fine. Just know that giving money to these freaks contributes to this faggotry you all claim to hate..

What even is your point? Just don't buy their game then. You act like triple AAA studio art departments aren't just full of blue haired nepo/DEI hires who hate that men exist.

And that's a good thing actually.

BUT nostalgia!

Just make it fun and I don't give a fuck, my favorite indie games are clones

JUST PLAY THE OLD GAMES

I did.

There are whole genres that basically belong to the indie sphere. Rouglikes and survival/building games are obvious ones.

Also, why shouldn't people try to recreate and build on older kinds of games that were good, and that there's still a desire for?
Why is it not a problem when Rockstar releases GTA for the tenth time, or Nintendo releases Pokemon again, but it is a problem if someone decides to go outside of the system, and get in on the action?

none of these people gave a shit about the competency crisis they were gleefully creating until people started to reject their shitty ass games

I believe there is such a thing as nostalgia poisoning

I have no doubt about it, for I have it. The thing is that big companies don't want to make games that I want while indie developers are making games that I want.
Is there nostalgia bait? Great. Worked for them, worked for me and we are both happy.
I'd rather play a literal 16 Bit Sonic Clone like this than playing "modern audience with bold political messages" game #6642.

4.jpg - 1920x1080, 579.59K

i think it's super funny how 1 autist in his mom's basement can now make a game that's infinitely more successful than a game made by over 1,000 people. corporations are the death of passion, and passion is what matters the most in art.

uhhhh THOSE NAMES DONT COUNT CHUD

pathetic goyllenial behavior, no wonder you like all that rehashed crap, you probably even have a Sonic OC like the faggot that you are

This, it all boils down to demand, big companies won't make what others want and will keep going for flops like extraction shooters or yet another overwatch clone.

Call nostalgia slop, but there's a market for it for a reason.

Lets say I like 3D platformers, outside of just replaying the old games indies are literally the only ones making them. The only "AAA" 3D platformer that isn't nintendo made and I say that loosely is Astrobot

Furrynigger mindbroken after losing argument

Sad!

My last purchase is made on matrix/slitherine.

It's because development is infinitely more accessible than it used to be. People can spend a few weeks creating a good idea then spend months polishing it.
Comparatively triple A just focuses on grand generic stories before thinking about if their game is fun to play or not.

Super Deepthroat 2.0
It'll be possible soon.

Being inspired by somethng isn't bad and iterating upon a genre isn't bad, but when your game is "hi this is crono trigger meets mario RPG" and it's nothing but pure imitation, an attempt to recapture and reference someone else's glory instead of having something of your own to say, it just ends up being a pale imitation. I'm one of the most backwards-looking motherfuckers to exist and I almost exclusively play older games, but even I realize there's something wrong with an industry that subsides on nothing but nostalgia worship

Why is it not a problem when Rockstar releases GTA for the tenth time, or Nintendo releases Pokemon again

Those are a problem too.

The story of the Freedom Planet dev is a tragic one. You're mid-way through FP2's development and your wife leaves you, followed by trooning out.

environmental station alpha

that shits good, did you get the real endings after that big secret hunt?

Good writers are important, but it seems most people working in the games industry aren't really good writers, just like most writers aren't really good writers and most journalists aren't really good journalists. They're mediocre.

Just letting you know "journalist" that I did not click on your ad.
Additionally indie games did not "deprofessionalize". It was suits. Do your reps as journalists should.

Remember, during 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th gens, we had tiny studios of ppl making "indy" games. It's just NOW you can make a game with ONE GUY because engines exist for free to make this shit feasible.

Using delusionalGTP

Triple retard.

Love when you see posts like this and you can already tell some seething faggot got his phone out so he could double post and not look like a same fag.

If you like Nordjank I also recommend Northern Journey from that list which just feels very unique. It's Norwegian though, but so swampy you would expect Finns.

Unfortunately I could only get 2 endings on my own, I never even got to the clock without a guide.

AAA devs are like construction companies that are made to build the tallest skyscraper. After a certain amount of capacity it's just a silly dinosaur business.

Is there nostalgia bait? Great. Worked for them, worked for me and we are both happy.

I'd rather play a literal 16 Bit Sonic Clone like this than playing "modern audience with bold political messages" game #6642.

Me too, but I think they should have their own identity instead of wearing a Sonic OC fursuit
I don't really have a problem with "Hey we haven't had a game like this in a long time; there's a niche in the market that isn't being met, and I'll fill that niche" but I still think blind imitation has taken up too big a share of the indie game industry. Most of them are trying too hard to BE the game they were inspired by, with a couple of small differences.
The gaming industry has always played follow the leader, but the cynical copying of, say, RE4 and Dark Souls is merely annoying, whereas this growing inability to innovate, or even to conceive of innovation, actually concerns me.

Good writers are important

Depends on the game and the genre, it's not even close to being the same thing as artists, animators, programmers, etc.

That was exactly the game I was thinking of, and I think it's a mess because it refused to step out of the shadow of the games it was copying

Perfectly said. Indie noticed that gap and were smart enough to fill it. AAA companies just throw random UE5 slops and hope one of them sticks well enough to be their Game as a Service flagship.
I really don't care if he either trooned out or killed himself. American McGee also had a tragic story but that didn't prevent me from playing his Alice games.
I just hope you're not talking shit about trannies while defending big companies games. That would be another level of retardness, perhaps some kind of retarded nirvana or enlightenment.

I beat Ghost Deck on gold stake, then completely forgot about it most the time

the industry is in danger

thank fucking god.
next do hollywood, they also deserve complete bankruptcy

but the cynical copying of, say, RE4 and Dark Souls is merely annoying

Who the fuck is copying RE4? The only notable example is Dead space and even then it took some differences. Souls clones are a bigger problem because they killed traditional action games over night it's been over 10 years and we're only JUST finally getting them back after over a straight decade of souls clones-likes

NTA but I got the not-Sans-Undergunt secret boss ending and kinda loathed the game by then. Oft-irritating secrets, most of which are heavily backloaded, and an infatuation with rewarding them with wet farts.
I finished it out of pure spite.

indie games are so great I love them

Veritus is sitting on my list since I bought it on sale a while back. How does it stack up to Prodigal? I liked Prodigal a lot, but the marriage mechanics were half-baked in that you have to lock into getting one girl's story per playthrough since marriage is the only reason you can interact with the women to learn their backstories. The postgame side content was amazing, though

How is that my problem?
AAA gaming has been shit for years. It can actually die off completely for all I care.

Northern Journey was so good.

I just hope you're not talking shit about trannies while defending big companies games

I'm not going to defend big campanies who openly hate their player-base, just got reminded of with that pic you posted. Even if FP is still a good game.

popular indie titles

trend chasers have always existed. Indies games exist for enlightened thinkers that just pick the games they think look interesting and play them

I got bored in 3

Total indieslop and fanmade slop "developers" death

I just got Balatro free on PS+ and I'll probably still never play it
some indie games are fun, been playing the hell outta some Dome Keeper lately

found myself bubbling with frustration. Few of the developers on display were working on teams larger than three people.

The story was the same everywhere I went. Solo devs, two-person teams, and publishers fishing for low-budget indie hits were the talk of the show.

What feels wrong is how few people seem to benefit from this status quo.

But as a foundation for game development, it's a framework that celebrates the few over the many. It narrows which roles are considered "essential" for making great games (often designers or programmers) and treats other positions as somehow less essential.

Literally the best news i've heard in years.
And this journocunt is rabid that they aren't hiring more leeches to suckle blood off actual devs.

Who the fuck is copying RE4?

I guess in that case it was mostly just a flood of over the shoulder shooters, rather than direct copies. Wasn't that pertinent to my point after all

I see hweel.
I click hweel.
Simple as.
I wonder how many runs coulda gone better of I didn't...

I sadly do not recommend Veritus unless you were REALLY into the dungeons. Veritus is like if you took Prodigal and completely stripped out the overworld, revisiting old dungeons, romance, quests, etc. You literally teleport from dungeon to dungeon with your crew of raiders. I really wanted to like Veritus, but without the town stuff a lot of the stakes are gone. Also, the crafting system to get buffs instead of buying them in shops is a little more awkward to use and you may end up wasting (limited) resources trying to figure out what combinations even make edible food. You can't go back to old dungeons to get any items you missed. The characters in this game have a lot less going on storywise as well.

It sounds to me like if those positions can easily be removed without the quality of the game going down then they were indeed not essential.

You can't go back to old dungeons to get any items you missed.

The fuck you talking about, Anon? You most definitely can.

I mean what the fuck does he expect them to do?

Yeah bruv let’s hire someone to write the story for our game for the low cost of half of our entire budget

1 (one) (singular) person can make good games by themselves now

this is a bad things according to """professionals"""

Oh no because the industry is such a great thing to protect
whatever will we do

I understand your point and I agree with it to some extent.

blind imitation

Let's say I want a PS1 style survival horror, so I want low-poly graph, fixed camera, per-rendered backgrounds, shitty control, etc.
Just my description would be enough to call it a classic RE clone... But I want something like that, anyways. I don't even know how you can reinvent that low-poly wheel in a way that it could be called its own thing and not a clone.

Most of them are trying too hard to BE the game they were inspired by

But, yes, I got your point. Still, some developers are still new to that and are learning their ways and styles. This happens in any industry: film, books, music.

The gaming industry has always played follow the leader

Since you didn't say it: yes, I know indie devs do the same thing.

In general, we are well aware there are many clones, but their price, their simplicity, and their fun is something we are not having with the big dudes, with a few exceptions.

If it's Triple A then it's gay.

ten years worth of games

it's mostly goyslop

every row has a remake

Being a zoomer must be suffering.

If you can then it wasn't intuitive to me that you can go back to old dungeons. Your base camp just auto-links to a new dungeon when you clear the old one. I am honestly surprised there are actually TWO people in this thread other than me who have even heard of this guy's games.

I stand by the rest of the criticism though.

holy mother of slops

KCD 2

lmao lil bro got grifted

Anon I haven't touched the game since January. If you say there is a way to go back to previous dungeons I believe you, I don't really think that's the biggest problem with the game by a long shot.

That's sad. I liked the dungeons a lot, but the overworld and being able to unlock more shit as you go by figuring out what items or character interactions can get you past what obstacles glued them together in a way that made the world feel more cohesive.
Colorgrave's cool, I just finished up Curse Crackers (someone from here recommended it a few months ago). He always hides loads of hidden shit in his games, for better or worse. I would never have figured out the one secret ticket door (pic related) that requires a seemingly random cheat code in the cactus room without finding it in a Steam guide. I still don't know where the code for it even came from.

I don't.
I just recognize when really obvious astroturfing is happening.

I would call classic survival horror a genre unto itself at this point, even though it is basically 80% Resident Evil. But sure, there's plenty of gray area in that. But I'm not so bothered by individual imitations so much as the sheer prevalence of them in the market, and the seeming unwillingness for developers to rely on their own creativity and forge their own path. There's a place for imitations as long as there's a demand for them.
I'm glad you understand what I'm getting at though. And I, like you, prefer to play those clones over what the AAA industry is vomiting out - that's just as creatively barren (if not more) but also full of the worst modern design trends.
(And thank you for reminding me that I have Alisa waiting for me in my library)

And GR is a good game on top of that

it depend on your definition of 'artist'
are you talking about the people making animation/model/level design?
or are you talking about some dudes doodling things on the white board?

If devs want professionalism, how about caring about your craft? Kick out the suits chasing money and make games that do what games are supposed to do, evoke joy. Money being the most important factor to optimize is an oversight of the system.

is this not just how capitalism works? competition as intended?

Will someone please think about them

deprofessionalization is actually a good thing

You're welcome, bro. It was nice having that conversation with you.
Regardless of any different opinions we may have, it is good to know that shitting on AAA industry is becoming more and more common every day. They deserve every downfall for their stupid decisions.

Absolutely 100% agreed.

Pic unrelated, just wanted to post another worthwhile indie game.

Thanks, that one wasn't on my radar. I'll check that out too.

>is this not just how capitalism works?

There's the problem, they don't want capitalism allegedly but deep down they do

They don't want to be on the losing side of capitalism, despite more than deserving to be.

I want to die

Good
Fuck AAA slop, their companies and the people who work for them.
Even in big companies, games used to be made because the people making them had a vision.
Sure they still had to make money, but they were made because the creators wanted to make it.

Now they're made because shareholder demands, and their influence seeps out of every pore of every modern game.

The vast majority of vidya released nowadays lives by its art, animation and sound design.

popular mass market vidya lives and dies by how aggressively they can be marketed
Soulless and cynical, only people who don't play videogames would marvel about things that aren't gameplay. The technical advances of the late 20th century are over, graphicsfags can only gush about moviegames now, meanwhile stylized games from 30 years ago still hold up fine.

Wacky card game dedtroy american kikes.
Love to see it.

THE INDUSTRY IS IN DANGER

You love to see it.

Pretty much this there's enough old games for me to play forever

Industry collapse soon.

You've been saying this shit for 20 years.

I'm just maining yellow deck so I can get to gold stake and learn the game
Some of these runs are actually asscrack I always try to roll small hands like pair/high but sometimes you'll just get no luck or tempo and slowly die from trying to pivot to the meager power gains from the shop

It's a good thing in some cases but in other cases, like Will Wright getting forced out, it's bad

Wrong. Games have been bad for exactly 21 years

I'd say art, music, and gameplay are all equally important. A game can be carried by any of those three

I will buy indie
I will buy rougelikes/lites
I will rape every AAA dev into nonexistence

Deal with it

The feds should be banning these parasites from even using computers m, what the fuck are they doing?

I think what anon was getting at was talent bloat, which is a huge problem with game development. How do you think the budgets get so big? They have to pay all of their thousands of employees, who are probably mis- and micromanaged, and are constantly miscommunicating. I.e., modern companies.

Expedition 33 is a perfect example of this. 30-40 people. How many artists do you think they have? Programmers? Testers? The ONLY thing the industry is doing right now is cutting the fat from the industry and laying off. I'm not sad people lost their jobs. That's life. That's a lesson you learn real quick when you become an adult.

Astroturf is when new game doesn't pace out their obvious marketing push and are more preoccupied with countering people noticing that it's being astroturfed than adequately keeping up the illusion that it's a popular game that a lot of people enjoy.

Noooooooooooooo don't give money to the hobbyists making shit for the love of it buy the corporate slop or else the line will go down!

I've played shitty RPGMaker games made by teenagers that are more worthwhile than 90% of the slop AAA shits out these days. If you can't compete with randoms in their bedrooms as a huge company then you don't deserve to compete at all.

Wow, there's a few in there you might be able to call indie but even those are super popular or sequels to something super popular, that really is some incredibly mainstream taste besides branching out slightly right at the bottom of the list

Bryant Francis

Former Community Manager at Game Developers Conference

So he's an industry cuck

Even though all commercial creative endeavors are very much feast-or-famine, vidya and its surroundings are quite welcoming to newcomers. Bitch and moan about Steam and e-celebs all you want, but nobodies have a real chance to "make it" with their help. Not saying that strictly artistic things "make it", but God knows the chances are better than they are in the world of books, cinema, or theater.

Hur dur if I dismiss the entire country of one of the chief producers I can paint Indies as being nostalgiafaggotry

Sakuna isn't remember shit.
I think the only upcoming game I am interested in that could even slightly be described as remember is '83 being remember the cold war

NOOOOOO YOU CAN'T JUST HAVE A SOUND GUY, YOU NEED TO HIRE 15 FOLEY ARTISTS

No. Infact I'm making my own game right now.

Does anyone know any games that are set inside a big ol spaceship?

But you're putting the industry in danger of being deprofessionalized!

I don't buy indie games because indie devs seem just as pozzed as AAA devs these days. Even the allegedly "based" Real Game Awards awarded a troon dev in their racing games category.

Is Balatro a game?

My games this year I've beaten are

I'm a writer!!! Why am I not being paid to sit on my ass for years while everyone else makes the game that I wrote a few paragraphs for????

A good writer would spearhead his own game.

I already played the NES games indies rip off constantly, I don't need to waste my time playing 200th "boomer shooter" that still controls like a modern game, or a metroidvania with 1/100 the content of SOTN.

Why do these execs want so much control over product anyways?

Can't they just invest in a developer and fuck off?
Just treat that shit like buying a crypto coin?

I think the thing he seethes about more, is that Vidya for a while between 2005 to like 2020 had a really fucked up Hiring standard

They could gatekeep anyone they wanted out of the industry and most people did not have the resources to do shit about it.
Incels, Chuds, and anyone Stacy the HR manager didn't like, could not get in and the money was all monopolized.

I think what unironically really changed everything was the rise of crowd funding and patreon.
I unironically think pic related broke the status Quo
Suddenly Chud was making 10x the amount of these same industry brainlets and that absolutely broke them.

Competition in Capitalism

That's a big NoNo

Capitalism is leveraging the government to get what you want and then monopolizing the standard and kicking the ladder underneath you, and afterwards use your influence to stomp down anyone who might try to usurp you and become so integral to the economy that you become to big to fail and would wipe out every old persons pension plan if you drop even a single quarter of profit.

That's Capitalism

is this journo retarded? there is WAY TOO MUCH FUCKING BLOAT in game dev now and this surge of smaller teams is a GOOD thing.

Look at all that slop man! Jesus there are people like this?

That sounds like communism

minorities just to make investors goon when they see more browns than whites

Buy borderlands for 80 dollars or people will starve.

This whole thing is a case of git gud. Indie's poor time and effort into something or hit it big with meme streamers. AAA can't compete because they're divorced from that organic market.
Is it a good point? Treating 'code monkeys' and the like as 'lesser' is what the industry has done for decades lmao.
He just has a really biased take. Very "No they might take my job if things keep going this way" even tho he isn't a serious writer for vydia. The fuck is 'game narrative' even? Could mean massively different things from company to company it's why I hate shit like this.

Randy could use to lose some weight.

So this is the fabled modern audience studios keep looking for

Except the ratio of successful chud to non chud games , the truth would be deviating from generic white male shootan was the successful move.

waah indie devs won't pay us to promote their game or bribe us to give it a good score

It's funny to consider for a minute that this post is not bait and anon actually believes what he says, and imagine how every time he opens a book his first thought is "this book sucks, I've seen all these words before".
And out of curiosity, what did Factorio rip off exactly?

Meant for I'm a bit of a 'sex poster, you see.

Same but for checkered deck. Haven't played since.

yes they will, blue prince.

"Deproffessionalization" is not a result of Indie Games, you mega retard. It is a result of the corporate giants hiring people on short term contracts and outsourcing as much as possible. It comes from the corporate giants laying off industry veterans who know what they are doing, just so they can hire some fresh out of college newbie who took a blender course and watched an unreal engine tutorial at a fraction of the cost. It's about corporations cutting corners where they really shouldn't on an attempt at making things cheaper for them, all the while eroding any trust that the industry is a viable career. Indie has nothing to do with it, it's like complaining about Mom n pop shops because target had a bad quarter or something. Absolutely retarded reasoning to anyone with a brain.

These aren't movies. Graphics aren't quality.

deprofessionalization-is-bad-for-video-games

correct, which is why AAA games continue to get worse every year. there are no professionals worthy of the name working on them anymore

Why would they? Just make DEI slop that supports The Message™ as well as anything from the industry, make it look "retro" so the zoomers playing it can goon to how "cool" they are for playing a game that replicates an era they were a fetus in (if even), and watch the praise roll in from critics and audience alike. It worked for Undertale, it'll work for you too.

OH BOY I'M GONNA BUY 5 MORE

Dwarf Fortress has zero art whatsoever and is a successful free game, so successful that the optional paid version made the dev rich because people wanted to support it.

fucking normie

For ten years these people are on twitter writing in complete sentences that these games aren't for me, frequently using the exact words "not for you"

I stop buying them

You have taken the food from my children's mouths. You have ruined me. I am undone

The mandate of heaven comes and goes. In the end, it's all a trick.

bubble pops and useless hacks are left behind

I fail to see the problem.
