I'm glad people reached out to Cynthia Harrell for her performance of the original but as much as it pains me, I think it's a bit too late for her to improve on the original.
I hope I'm wrong but her previous live renditions after showing up at some cons still left something to be desired. Hopefully a full studio's repertoire can capture the magic again since live stuff is harder to nail than a studio recording.
i dont think its trying to improve, but just to bring a new version in line with the current time. obviously the age is gonna catch up with the singer and its not gonna sound as good as it did before, but what you are appreciating here, is the fact that she decided to give it a whirl again when she could have said 'no, thank you'.
and its not like it really sounds bad or anything.
Given the interviews, I don't think she had any reason to say no because she was incredibly appreciative about learning how beloved Snake Eater is.

my guess is they want to do it in chronological order and the fact that a MGS1 remake would take insanely more effort and talent. Create an easier remake with 3 to prove they're serious about the franchise, recruit more talent, expand their development tools and then begin work on modernizing a ps1 game for modern audiences. This remake is mostly taking the framework of a ps2 game but remaking a ps1 game would be much harder to modernize.

that footage/trailer looks kinda shitty, like random in-game cinematics with random snake skeletons and smoke superimposed over the top instead of a stand alone cinematic. the original had the snakes and smoke too but they were more sporadic and the whole thing was more about colors and vibes than just straight up story cinematics. it looked a lot more like a trippy 60s spy movie intro than the actors in the OP video are pretending the new one does.
