Mexico's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has criticized games for promoting violence, and has proposed we find new ways for the youth to have fun. In her words (translated):
the gameplay consists of killing people... how does that make sense?
A member of the parliament from the same party, Arturo Ávila, has said the criminal code should be modified so video games that "generate violence", particularly violence against women, would stop being played. He hasn't explicitly called for a ban.
I think they make some good points.
What can we as gamers do to promote a healthier gaming landscape, other than "vote with our wallets"? It doesn't matter how many puzzle games we buy, the shooting and killing and abusing games are still bestsellers. Women, particularly, keep suffering because of it.
