So when you present what is ostensibly a competently made jrpg with a more palatable aesthetic in an era where jrpgs have otherwise fallen out of favor for the mainstream, you get a surprising hit

If we're talking just about gameplay, I don't think this game has anything to offer to the kind of player who enjoys perfecting their combo execution in fighting games. It's not meant to challenge your reflexes or surprise you in the way that Elden Roll can. It's only meant to be difficult enough to carry a more casual player's attention through the runtime. And since it's not a JRPG, that runtime is less than a fulltime job instead of being longer than fucking medschool residency.

I’m pretty solid when it comes to reaction-based gameplay (3.x kdr in multiplayer fps), but timing parries in a turn-based game just feels weird to me. It's like putting pineapple on pizza. You can spam the block and dodge
It's not instantaneous of course so if your timing is off, you eat a hit but you can essentially dodge and parry as many times as you want waiting for the attack to land

I also think it's a poor combination of the genres. I find it bizarre how little criticism the actual combat gets, and even on this board is incredibly defensive over it.

I thought the game was good, but I'm glad it wasn't any longer than it was, because I was sick of the combat by the end of it. Parrying feels fun, but it's not as fun as landing a parry in Sekiro or any other recent parry-slop game to come out. I dislike the combat systems because even though each character has a unique skill tree and mechanics, and the picto system adds a huge amount of opportunities into character building, it all takes a backseat to just parrying / dodging attacks.

No I mean the inclusion of the mechanic itself feels like bad design to me. It's the same kind of thing that bugged me about Lulu's overdrive in ffx where you had to spin the analog stick to get more hits. It just doesn't blend well with the turn-based rpg feel imo
