It's a tool that requires learning, experimentation and practice to produce good results - and yes you can learn it yourself (and it's a lot easier than learning how to draw before you troon out on me about it being a skill), but there will always be someone else putting more time and effort into it to the point where someone is willing to pay for it, thus making them a professional.
