Honestly it does surprise me from an outsider's perspective because it looks like more or less the exact same shit as usual, and if it were just that I still wouldn't be surprised because in a fighting game changes mechanics that might seem innocuous from a casual perspective can actually hugely impact the game, but it surprises me with MK specifically because I was under the impression that the vast majority of MKfags don't give a shit how it plays anyway. Even if it is a massive downgrade mechanically I'd think it would still do as well as any MK so long as it has a good amount of singleplayer content for a fighting game, a lot of character interactions and fatalities. It certainly seems to have all of those, so I guess the singleplayer content must just be low quality because I can't imagine the mechanics of the game, good or bad, being much of a turn off for most MK fans.

I'm a casual player when it comes to this franchise and last time I really paid attention to it, Scorpion and Sub-Zero were allies. They also seemed less cool and it kind of got me less interested in following the franchise after that.

There were too many aspects that were annoying instead of fun.
They did an amazing job promoting the game initially but there's no reason to keep seeking out annoying paid experiences beyond the base game.
On top of that, there's no esports interest which really limits continued sales.

Story mode + DLC expansion was worse than MK11. Lack of Single-Player modes, no krypt, current system is just the equivalent of Gacha, you don't feel progression. Too much catering to e-sports, gameplay is an improvement over MK11 but feels lackluster due to tag/kameo mechanics.
NRS should just quit making games, it's sad how my favorite franchise turned into this.

MK as a series has always been about chicks and violence with a story that I can best describe as 2 gradeschoolers making up a scenario that's about fighters doing cool shit with cool story elements which made it campy in a fun way. For me, I don't think people gave 2 shit about the gameplay that much.

With the recent MK games however, chicks are slowly being turned into uggos and the story felt less cooler. Because of it, I'm not surprised if people starts to drop the series as a whole. I don't think it has a strong enough hook to attract a lot of casuals to the new game and I don't believe that the current gameplay is that exciting and fresh enough to hold a lot of the old timers. If it weren't for the guest characters, I don't think it had that much of a leg to stand on.
Also, visually, I don't think there's that much difference between MK11 or even 10 to the recent one. Compare it to other games like the Street Fighter and King of Fighters series. They try enough to make each game to be unique to a degree with its own styles.

MK1 has barely even been a blip on the radar, and I’m not even curious about it.

The apathy has set in for me with MK, just like with so many other long-running franchises that have destroyed themselves seeking that elusive “modern audience” that doesn’t actually exist. 3D/Realistic fighting games are fucking ass. The character models always look awkward and since the coloring and shading is trying to be realistic they blend in with the backgrounds. They're a fucking eyesore and the technical aspects are far worse than their predecessors.
This applies to virtually every major Fighting game franchise. They're all ass. Genre is dead apart from AA/Indie productions.
