Ethics in games journalism is a ridiculous idea. Only watch streamers, those are at least somewhat entertaining and you actually see the games being played by people who don't hate video games and gamers.

If they tell you the truth about them, they will never get free copies from that publisher and worst case they get the media outlet banned by the publisher. Vidya reviewers are 99% rats who only care about their higher ups and themselves, then there is every now and then the odd one out that is 100% completely honest and he fades away the moment word gets around enough that he actually wants good games, not the fucking slop you release now.

Even the word opinion should be in big quotation marks. We know most of the time they can't give bad scores to games from devs and publishers who advertise on their site because that would mean losing a big chunk of revenue along with exclusive access unless everyone is actually on board with saying it's bad.

I wouldn't bother with game reviewers even if they were trustworthy. Save for a few rare occasions, the vast majority of the time I only need to watch gameplay videos to know if I'm interested in a game

Why not just play the game for yourself and form your own opinion?
Watch a few gameplay clips beforehand if you have no idea what it's about. Does it seem mildly appealing? Take a chance and be the judge of whether it's good or not. Or don't if you don't think it's worth the price.

Alternatively you could follow some youtuber that specializes in a certain genre, smaller ones are going to be more honest generally speaking. But nobody but you can know whether you'll enjoy a game or not.

despite the ad revenue and access dependence riding on them reviews almost meant something back when games were $50 near mystery boxes. with just the back cover to go off unless you had someone to borrow the game from first who knows what you could end up getting. now there's a way higher floor. information and the simplest video demos make so easy get an idea of what a game is based around there's almost nothing to really review. add in the NDA/embargo timing stuff and who is even paying any attention to trust them? they practically exist for people who need an authority to point to that comforts and supports them.

you'll be tired of gaming before you run out free games. you don't need much in the way of sourcing beyond typing a few games you like into google or reading some player reviews for similar things. it's little cost to just play the games and stop researching everything to death. treat it like a movie where you're costing yourself whole movies over time when you're spending time on some AI level fluff pro reviews. it's either conceptionally interesting on a basic level and worth a few hours and maybe even $10-20, or it's not.
